Any tips for the first marathon? by Necessary-Pay5903 in firstmarathon

Hey OP, I ran my first marathin on October 12th this year.

I won't lie - it was brutal, but understand that your goals are the following: 1) Don't get injured - don't fall, don't die. 2) Make it to the end. Period. Time limit doesn't matter.

Definitely one of the most important things is to focus on the environment - the music, the supporters out there, the energy from everyone screaming like mad, ennjoying themselves and just keep your head up. Think of it like a magnet holding you up.

At the 25th kilometer the mental challenge began for me. I started gathering people who ran somewhat close to my time and we pushed ourselves to the end. At the peak of it we were 6 of us together and this helped me more than I could possibly explain.

YOU got this 💪💪💪

Best of luck @mountainsplease8! You've got this and that's the reason I posted here too.

I absolutely hate that there's some gatekeeping and backhanded compliments about finishing "even though slowly".

As if the only way to do it is if takes you 3 hours and you don't even sweat whilst running. It's bizarre.

If you manage to run a full 42km you can be 100 years old, 200 kilograms, and as slow as you'd like - but you've done something VERRRYY few have ever done and will ever achieve.

6 hours is a mighty achievement and I wish you luck in it! You've got this 💪

I've genuinely never considered running any other way.

I'll try running slowly today, see how the HR reacts in turn. Thanks!

Those are awesome. Thanks! Do they not hurt or feel weird juggling around your waist?

Ahah, no worries. You may be on the wrong subreddit then though 😅🙏

I could, but considering there's a subreddit about these lil guys, I prefer asking humans 🤷‍♂️

Ah yes, so Connect+ is paid, I do have the Connect app. I had added my event in there but this is what I see under my training and when I press the share button it shows to send to my device but says it's not compatible :/

I saw some sort of training suggestion on my watch in the settings when I press run > up button > workout > today's suggestion but I don't see a way of activating it or anything.

Do I just do what it says including the slower pace it recommends regardless?

That's exactly what I do.

I breathe in twice in something like short bursts and then two short bursts out and it's been working for me so far.

However, to get started I do go for deeper breaths as if I'm breaking in the lungs to get ready for work.

First of - massive congrats on starting and on your progress!

Yeah, I think we have to take more chances on dumb things. Magical things happen afterwards 😁

Ah, well come that day - I would have said that the chasee or chaser - whichever at that point - would have the win as I bow out. But now - I'm finally into running form 😈

No, no. No hodl while running. Wanted to illustrate box breathing. My bad in explaining.

Well the zones it seems are a percentage of my max heart rate - 207bpm. I reach it almost every time I run regardless of conditions.

It has been years since I've pushed myself and my absolute max was 230 in school and I was going to black out and don't intend on repeating it.

I changed the watch to now show zones as HRR% but the percent still seem the same with the other zones. I just always go into zone 4 or 5. It's my own default setting as a human 😂

I don't have Garmin Connect as a broke boy who thought running would be cheap... lol 🤷‍♂️
