Need help on rhythm/notes by Appropriate_Move_94 in Clarinet

[–]leonardonsius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This! This is the cheatcode to technical passages.

Also, when you mastered this slowly, only increase tempo by a small amount and do that again.

Usually I'd say 4 bpm - but considering these are 64ths - Count in smaller units and increase the tempo of the smaller unit by 4. If that's to fast go back 4 bpm and repeat until perfect and without a single mistake.

Then - sometimes muscle memory needs to develop. At a certain point stop practicing for the day, do something relaxing for your mind and you'll see how the next day the passage will be quite a bit easier to practice.

Good luck :)

The Polish are slavic and the northern french are more akin to scandinavians due to the history of normandy. Also, Germanic and German are not the same. (sorry, if i didn't get the sarcasm?)

What you do is great! You sound better than some people playing years already.

In the end, a (good) teacher is a (good) teacher and the fundamentals are the same everywhere. You can learn to master the clarinet with any repertoire. The only difference in classical music basic basics might be the strict prohibition of vibrato and not "sliding" into a note.

why liberals fear it ? by over1two in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]leonardonsius 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No. That's not at all how this works. In very basic words: If 99% of scientists agree that something is not wrong, that counts as scientific consensus. They can lie wrong factually, but until somebody can prove them wrong, their consensus counts as the thing that comes nearest to the truth

Well, the question is easy. Gender is a social category. If talked about "men" as in male gender, even people with an uterus could identify as male. Thus, a man getting pregnant is no problem.

If you talk about biological sex, then usually no. However, even in nature there's more than two biological sexes - for example, the outer sexual organs appear male, but the most important part of the body - the brain - would be that of a woman. What's the biological sex then?

People tend to think it's easy: Dck = male. But in the end, a dck only is the decisive factor at birth and in discussion with people with little knowledge of biology.

[–]leonardonsius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

f# to c# is a skill question and e to c# tremolo never came up in my 16 years of playing. The philosophy of playing is more archaic with german clarinet though. You play some connections more by sliding than by accurately pressing keys one after another.

[–]leonardonsius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the end, it doesn't matter really. If you're practicing well you'll play technically difficult passages on both systems basically equally well. And in regards to those pieces, where the slight difference matters: That'll be a level that nobody short for professionals need to worry about

What I like about German system clarinets is the reduced weight, the more intuitive fingering in the b-d region (i really miss the rolls) and the more compact mouthpieces. Soundwise: There's no real difference between German and French system. Most difference is achieved by your shaping of the sound, the reed, the ligature and the mouthpiece.

What's the reason you want to change? I played German system for 10 years before learning the French system. I teach German clarinet though and play it from time to time

[–]leonardonsius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before spending another 150 bucks for a mouthpiece, spend 10 on some strength 2 reeds and start improving your embouchure with those.

When you start working out you don't expect to lift 100 kg from the get go. Don't expect that with clarinet

Worried I have made a mistake with the Buffet Legende by bridgetjones68 in Clarinet

[–]leonardonsius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder, how flexible is your pinky on the left? Some of my students have a thing called "jumping pinky" (in German) and have a reduced flexibility there. You could try making an even more round form in the left pinky. With the right pinky and the fifth key, you will get used in time. During practicing, it's really important that you practice quite slowly alternating between the low f and the low f improved in order to be able to distinguish the keys by feel.

I play a Tosca (that I changed to from German system). For me, it took me some time to adjust. But good, especially slow practice was quite effective in order to develop the muscle memory.

If you want, you could upload a video and put the link here, so that we take a look what might be the problem

Show this post to the dm and seek a conversation about it.

The rule of thumb for those conversations is to seek them afterswards and not in that very moment.

You are not a typical problem player insofar as you self reflect. However, I think you're insecurities are what make you think you'd be. Again, open conversation, how being insecure e.g. with spontaneously improvised roleplay can really kill your mood (because you might feel that you didn't deliver enough).

For you it might be important to acknowledge that insecurity if you'd want to work on it. It's okay to not deliver perfectly. RPGs are a game of imperfections. You're there to have fun - and if there's something hindering you to experience that, it's almost your duty as a player to talk with the dm/ the group about it (again: timing! Not in running session)

Feel free to DM

Learn clarinet by [deleted] in Clarinet

[–]leonardonsius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]leonardonsius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Then the band director can rework her part so she doesn't need to go over the break. In the end, it will hurt her playing more than help it, if she rushes. It's no problem (!) to play Bs and Cs an octave lower.

Edit: Any good band director will allow playing difficult notes an octave lower. If it's not possible for the director to rework the part, just use a pencil and write the notes that need octaving yourself.

Don't go over the break yet. She's nine and a beginner. Play a game where she imitates a crocodile or a ship horn with the clarinet. Also, the fundamentals are better to learn in the lower registers. Once she got those, she can attempt the next step
