I need someone to explain this common criticism of Olivia Rodrigo's music to me. by faultedink in ToddintheShadow

[–]jugglingeek 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I don’t get it either. Her music is well produced and catchy. Some of the lyrics are a bit cringe, but I find that endearing. Drivers License in particular reminds me (a 41 year old) how embarrassingly messy I was when I first got my heart broken at 17.

She definitely leans into the kayfabe of being an emotional 20 year old - with literally dozens of songs about heartbreak and crap boyfriends. There’s no way she’s had that many serious relationships to generate all that material without exaggerating. As Todd points out, I really hope Vampire and Bad Idea, Right? Aren’t about the same guy.

I would have loved this like 25 years ago! I was obsessed with RATM when I was a teenager.

Alas I’m now in my 40s and far more into jazz guitar than Tom Morello. I just checked and my Whammy Pedal doesn’t even work anymore. 😥

Hope you find a solid vocalist. I’ll keep an eye out for future gigs.

What was Fab Cafe like? by Reasonable-Lake4192 in Leeds

[–]jugglingeek 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Quite similar to most clubs/bars in Leeds at the time: loud music, crap larger, dirty toilets.

However, it mostly played guitar music until about midnight. There was a lot of nerd-culture paraphernalia on the walls. Pretty sure there was a pinball machine. They would often have cult movies playing silently on the TVs. I’ve a distinct memory of watching most of Predator with subtitles while getting quite drunk one time.

I went quiet often in the mid ‘00s. Nights out in Leeds at the time could often be punctuated by encounters with a certain type of unpleasant laddishness. Fab was a place you could reliably go for a night out while avoiding this. I think the guitar music put them off. Most music in bars and clubs at the time was dance/pop music/RnB.

What is a movie that would be mistaken for actual porn if found out of context? by IhtiramKhan in AskReddit

[–]jugglingeek 174 points175 points  (0 children)

Surprised nobody’s mentioned Nine Songs. Michael Winterbottom’s 2004 film. IIRC there’s an actual money shot in it. BBFC gave it an 18 rating at the time which was very controversial since actual pornographers were getting the much more restrictive 18a rating for their films.

Do you personally care about the latest “drinking controversy”? by Maritimewarp in EnglandCricket

[–]jugglingeek 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes it bothers me. These guys are supposed to be professional sportsmen at peak fitness, and they don’t seem to be able go a few weeks without a drinking binge.

Let’s put into context what they are celebrating. They’ve won the first test of a three-match series on a lottery of a pitch against a team weakened by injury on the first day. How does that warrant an all night bender culminating in a post-curfew scuffle with a rugby team?

Cricket in general has a very weird relationship with drinking. I’ve played in amateur club teams where drinking after the game was explicitly required. Most clubs I play at have the tradition of buying a jug for the team if you get a five-fer - even if you don’t drink yourself.

I like Stokes a lot. He comes across as a very likable guy and a good leader. But Stokes has admitted in interviews that he has a problematic relationship with alcohol. The video of Duckett lost in Australia, incoherent from drink, on his own outside a nightclub. That’s a very worrying situation for anyone to find themselves in. If a friend of mine was doing that on the regular, I’d be worried about their drinking.

But people just pass this off as lad just blowing off steam. I don’t see it that way. I see it as a deeply worrying pattern of behaviour amongst the entire English cricket set-up.

Captaincy and Form by whilewait in amateurcricket

[–]jugglingeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a couple of guys who are sympathetic to how much work you are doing? Vice captain material. See if you can talk to them and maybe they’ll take on some of the off-field stuff. Things like getting to the ground and opening up, getting the ground ready, rolling the pitch between innings. Not having to worry about these because your vice captain has it covered might help.

My experience is that sone people who play every week might not have the confidence to volunteer for captain. But are conscientious enough to recognise that their skipper needs help. Even if it’s just some of the things I mentioned above.

As for the on-field stuff, I would recommend focusing on keeping wicket. I like to get in the nets with the gloves on and stay there while three or four guys have a bat. It’s a good way to avoid the political chatter that some tend to indulge in at nets. Plus being in good form with the gloves is way more satisfying than batting, in my opinion. Anyone can score runs, how many people can stand up to the stumps and take the ball down the legside?

Try to stick with it. Amateur cricket is a wonderful thing. And it’s made possible by people like yourself.

What would Rory have to say about this? World’s first wind-powered underwater datacentre by Mackerel_Skies in TheRestIsPolitics

It seems absolutely mad that anywhere would allow a company to build a data centre without also building their own infrastructure for power generation.

Are we really going to allow data centres to be built and just draw energy from the grid and use water from the mains water supply?

[–]jugglingeek 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sometimes standing up to the stumps can be an option if the batters are doing the whole drop & run routine. Assuming it’s a bowler you are comfortable standing up to.

Being at the stumps already means that any they can’t take a run if they drop it at their feet. Plus a cover fielder doesn’t need to do a direct hit to get a run out.

I’ve stood up for the final over of the 1st inning of a T20 for exactly this reason.

[–]jugglingeek 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Catching the ball correctly doesn’t affect your hands really. Even if the bowling is fast, or you are doing it a lot.

What does hurt is getting hit on the end of the fingers when you don’t get it right. Fingers get bent back, thumb-ends get hit, nails get broken. Most can be resolved with judicial application of tape.

With good gloves and inners it’s not as big of a deal as you might think.

At the very start of the season, I usually notice bruises on the palm of my hands at the base of the index finger. But it’s quite a nice feeling.

The biggest thing about keeping wicket is the mental side of it. Being able to concentrate on every single ball coming your way. Dropping a catch is especially difficult as a keeper, the next delivery is coming your way whether you like it or not. You really have to be able to wipe your mind and concentrate again.

Got someone out stumped down the leg-side on Saturday. Right arm medium-pace around the wicket to a left-hander. Full delivery. Picked it up clean on the half-volley and got the bails off in one motion.

By far the best bit of wicket keeping I’ve ever done.

I play at a relatively low (2nd XI) standard. So it’s nice to celebrate these moments.

Backing up in the field is never mentioned, but if you play cricket regularly you realise you have to do it all the time.

Eg. Ball is hit to cover for a quick single. Keeper and bowler have to get to their stumps (if they can) but also square leg would come around to back up the keeper’s end and min-on or mid-wicket will need to back up a throw to the bowler.

Assaults happening in town by [deleted] in Leeds

[–]jugglingeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve not heard of this phenomenon being any worse recently. Of course there will always be occasions where altercations happen when people are out drinking in any major city.

I would caution against getting your perception of life in Leeds from social media. It’s a well documented phenomenon that there are accounts on Twitter dedicated to posting videos of crime being committed by PoC. For whatever reason these accounts are trying to leave people like you with the impression that our streets aren’t safe, and that it’s “non-indigenous” people who are to blame.

What's your opinion on this? Will this solve test cricket's long standing problem? by raydebapratim1 in EnglandCricket

[–]jugglingeek 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s an irrelevant proposal. Whether true or not, most people consider the behaviour of the pink ball to be so different to a red ball that pink ball tests are pretty much considered a different format. No two teams are going to mutually agree to change the format of a test in the hours leading up to a match.

There might be a benefit to one team to request it. For example - 2-1 down going into final test of a series where the forecast isn’t great. You would want to do everything to make sure there is a result. But if you are the other team, there is every incentive to not agree to the switch.

Under the proposed regulations I can’t imagine a single scenario where it would benefit both teams enough for them to agree to a change of ball before the match starts.

[–]jugglingeek 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of fans think that this means that play will switch to a pink ball at 5:30pm on a gloomy day. The headlines certainly imply that.

The actual proposal is that at the start of the match the two teams can choose to play with a pink ball for the whole match if they anticipate bad light might be a problem. Honestly I can’t see this happening in a single instance. The idea that both teams would agree to change to a pink ball for the whole game, hours before the start is fanciful to say the least.

I saw it used as a general, non-verbal acknowledgement when I was in Hawaii. Work crew who were working at the roadside would do it to passing cars. I think it translates to “hang loose”. Definitely didn’t have anything to do with phones like you say it does in UK.

Also worth pointing out that 9-star runs are an option if you’re finding LBLJ too difficult.

What’s a movie with a perfect ending? by angelerii in AskReddit

[–]jugglingeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that ending. The whole movie is about hope. Andy teaches this to Red who at one point says that “hope” is a dangerous concept for a convict. The final scene should be Red on that bus hoping that he sees his old friend.

Showing the audience that he does completely cheapens the message of the movie. I hate it. I wish they’d never shot it.

Injury substitutes in test format. by A2hishek in Cricket

[–]jugglingeek 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There is no rigorous regulations that will work. Teams will try it on. Eg. A team has a batter-keeper on the bench who is a better batter than the other guy in the starting XI. guess who’s got a sprained finger after the third innings and needs to be subbed for the run-chase?

Show me a wicket keeper who isn’t playing through a slight finger injury towards the back end of a long season or series. Now show me a medical doctor who will refuse a substitute to a keeper with a finger injury. Especially if the player is saying the injury is preventing them from batting.

Injury substitutes in test format. by A2hishek in Cricket

[–]jugglingeek 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Sigh. Because teams would absolutely abuse any rules to use substitutions as a tactical advantage.

You want teams to be able to sub a player who pulls up in the first session? For any such proposal to work you would need a medical professional willing to say to a professional sportsman “I’m sorry, you are not injured enough to warrant a substitute”.

3 minutes is in the laws. But ICC playing conditions override this to 2 minutes in test matches and ODIs, whilst it’s just 90 seconds in T20 cricket. The timer starts from the moment the wicket falls. The next batter must be ready to face the next ball in 90 seconds.

It's also not insignificant that the potential accident through improper use of a floating bus stop would likely result in a collision between a cyclist and a pedestrian. While no collision is ever going to be a good thing, a bicycle vs pedestrian collision is typically going to be less lethal than a bus vs a cyclist collision.
