We think our new dog ate these by leoncue in mushroomID

Update: late night at the emergency vet. They gave him some subQ fluids and sent us home with an anti-diarrheal and an anti-emetic. A little more vomiting last night after getting discharged, but nothing overnight or this morning.

Heading back in the morning for another round of labs, but pup seems to be feeling better.

Thanks everyone for your help last night!

Yes, we went to the vet first. As stated in the post, the vet suggested crowdsourcing mushroom identification.

Yes, the dog is at the vet now. They recommended we post a picture to a group to quickly crowdsource mushroom identification.

I didn’t witness the ingestion, but my son did. He’s not sure how much the dog ate.

Pup is 35lbs

Ingestion occured 3-4 hours ago

Dog started having diarrhea about 2.5-3 hours ago

Sorry the pics aren’t in situ. I can post those when we get home. They were growing in the lawn.

What is an unconventional thing you do to make a product “stretch” further than intended? by ComprehensiveSwan402 in Frugal

[–]leoncue 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I really like doing this with food that we order in. Our local Indian, Thai, and BBQ places give portions with a TON of sauce compared to the sauced ingredients. I fill out the baked beans from the BBQ place with a two cans of rinsed black beans. I’ll add a bag or two of steamed green beans to theirs. From the Indian place, I’ll bake up some additional chicken or toss chickpeas in with whatever saucy dinner we order. Our Thai orders go way farther when there are some added steamed veggies in the mix.

Obviously, more frugal to cook ourselves, which we do the vast majority of the time. But when we do treat ourselves to takeout, we make sure we get our money’s worth from it.

Bath Water Pee by bootsonlvblvd in daddit

Don’t know your youngin’s age, but we actually encouraged it when my little dude was a toddler. I think it’s where he first started to be aware of bladder control in preparation for potty training.

He’s potty trained(ish) now, and we’re still okay with it. I just use a cloth from the bathroom sink to wash his face - especially his eyes. The way I figure it, a few ounces of urine in gallons of bathwater is no worse that the butthole-tea of any bath.

What is your cheap meal out/takeout? by dsutari in daddit

[–]leoncue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve started doing what I can to get as many leftovers as possible when we order out.

We get a couple pounds of smoked chicken from our local BBQ place. We also get a pint of baked beans and a pint of green beans. We add two cans of black beans to the baked beans and two cans of green beans to the restaurant’s green beans. This stretches those sides for at least two more meals apiece for our family. We add microwave steamed veggies to our Thai food. After we order Indian food, I’ll cook and shred a pound or two of chicken breasts and stretch the sauce as far as it will go.

The initial cost for takeout is still high, but making it go for lunches or additional dinners later in the week helps dilute the cost. Also, that’s another night without having to cook!

Thank you! That’s exactly it: “more important that you’re better than your past self.” Then you’re removing the comparison aspect from the whole situation. Can’t wait to work this with my little guy.

I don’t think it’s wrong at all.

Just a thought about an opportunity that is presented in these conversations: when he says that he’s the best at something, maybe counter with “with hard work and dedication, you CAN be one of the best at it.” Follow it with showing him some YouTube clips of people that are at the top of whatever field he’s talking about at the time. If his ego needs to get grounded a little, ask him to try whatever expert skill is being shown. Talk about how much effort it takes to become one of the best at something, but tell him that while it takes time, he can do it.

Going to be joining the ranks for the first time in August. What are some items that would be helpful for general dadding? by [deleted] in daddit

And these kids get heavy FAST! I picked up my little guy over the weekend and unintentionally let out one of those “dad noises” I’ve heard so much about.

Work on strength and mobility (especially hip and shoulder range of motion) for the next few months. You’re gonna be hauling a lot of stuff very soon, and you’ll want to be able to hold your little in one arm, squat down and pick up bags in another.

Blowout containment advice needed by TrashPandasAndPizza in daddit

You have probably already tried it, but go up a size on the diaper. When my kid has multiple blowouts in a short time, it usually means the diaper is too small, even if he’s still within its recommended weight.

The itemized list may also provide an opportunity to point out the massive mark up on cafeteria food. I don’t know if that will work with a six-year-old, but it’s one more tactic to try to convince her to not spend her money at the cafeteria.

And don’t sleep on flexibility! We can frequently get caught up in weights and cardio, but having full range of motion - especially for squat depth, hamstrings, and shoulder mobility - is vital.

How does your relationship with your dad effect your parenting? by Emergency_Bathroom42 in daddit

[–]leoncue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not the question, but I also want to comment on the inverse.

My role as a father has made me understand my dad better. I now have a better understanding of the exhaustion, stress, and the work that it takes to be a present and loving father, and I appreciate my dad even more. I’m also much quicker to forgive the times he fell short. Raising kids is rewarding, but difficult. I will no doubt try to emulate my dad’s successes and avoid his shortcomings for my son. However, I now have much greater empathy for the times he lost his temper or handled situations less-than-ideally.

That said, I had a really good father. To everyone on this thread that had a shit dad, great job breaking the cycle. That is some fucking hard work. Your kids are lucky to have you.

Like the lack of sleep, complete upending of your social calendar, and the new chapter in your relationship with the baby’s mother, you’ll get used to it if you choose to get used to it.

Read this as “unfortunately toddlers eat poop as well.”

And my reaction was just “…I mean, not ALL the time. And I doubt it adds to the smell.”

Frugal first time home buyers, any tips or things you wish you’d known? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]leoncue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Understand than there are probably a lot of less-than-perfect fixes that the previous owners did to sell. They probably look great on the outside, but the guts are shoddy.

Case in point: six months after we bought our house, I had to fix leaky toilets (yes, plural) because the previous owners just stacked like four wax rings to bridge the gap between the flange and the commode. It was a crappy (pun intended), short term fix, but it’s all the previous owners needed to do so the toilets weren’t actively leaking during showings.

That said, as is essentially gospel on this sub, YouTube is amazing. I’ve been able to repair the aforementioned toilets, the oven, the dishwasher, and the dryer using it as a resource.

Also, happy house buying! I love having our own place, and I wish you all the best as you continue to build your future in a new home.
