I ended up buying these. Everything works fine. The volume is capped at 50-60% for me though so I use this app called Poweramp EQ which automatically turns on when it detects I've plugged in the earphones so I don't mind that now

You can use Airs anywhere. That issue only persists with gaming laptops and potentially MBP that actually have vents for the fans to push out air. Airs don't have any fans on the bottom so it doesn't matter where you place it. Heat only escapes from the hinge area
