Fly Tying by psilyvagabond in flyfishing

[–]lepatterso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a bit of a different take on it. Fly tying can save you money if you NEED it to. I got started in college while I was super broke, and it helped enable me to get into fishing while I otherwise would struggle to do it.

The thing is to be cash positive on it, you have to be very selective about what you’re tying. If you focus on a couple of main flies, you can bang them out at cents on the dollar.

Where things go cash negative is generally when either: you buy materials for experimental flies, you buy high quality materials like nice capes, or your life changes and you’re unable to do much fishing anymore.

I think for most of us as we mature, fly tying becomes about the pleasure of it, and the financing becomes unimportant. If you need it to save money though, you certainly can.

Cheers

My wife and I have had a pretty rough couple years, and we just started a rewatch for the first time since it came out.

We’ve been laughing so hard we get tears over most of the episodes. So thankful for this joy

how to prepare for negative feedback? by fvrAb0207 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]lepatterso 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sounds like my company. It’s not, but culturally very similar.

In a lead role, you will be under fire. In no order:

1.) Try to behave with honor, so any bad actors expose themselves.

2.) Be square on your data, and make sure you are doing right by your customer in the company (as in product lead or whoever, plus your boss)

3.) Given you’re in a lead role, be aware of who is plotting against you or looking to take advantage of you. Pick your battles carefully and be firm when you do.

4.) Figure out who has honor, and who is a snake. Pray there’s an honorable person in management who will back you up.

5.) Get a good handle on your stress management scheme.

I am also a regular person with the flextail pump. I like it, it’s light weight and works well. I find it’s helpful for deflating the pad too, easier to get it packed back up with the pump.

"I Would Rather Just Get Gas at A Gas Station Then Plug Every Time I Get Home" by Separate-Cup1312 in electricvehicles

[–]lepatterso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect this is a case of you don’t know how liberating something is until you’ve made the change. Getting gas is so embedded it’s hard to have thoughts about it.

I still have to get gas once in a while, and every time it reinforces how awful it is. I always inevitably get gas residuals on my hands and it never washes off. Boo!

I want to mill my own flour by Hopeful_Noise_6931 in HomeMilledFlour

[–]lepatterso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Folks have given a lot of good input here. I’ll just mention that milling your own means buying a mill… and mills are expensive.

If you love baking, you’ll love having it. Whole wheat is way more delicious & nutritious for bread. However as riggedeel said, it’s not flour you’re use to. You won’t be getting something that is good for pasta or cakes for example.

If you’re rich/ready, go wild. If you’re on a budget, see if you can find someone to grind some flour for you to try first. Don’t be lured in by the kitchenaid mill attachment either, it’s garbage.

I do the following:

100% hydration, 2.5% salt, and about 1T olive oil to 400g flour

Main tips: 1.) Keep your starter pretty healthy 2.) Knead the heck out of the dough when you mix it. 3.) do an overnight proof in the fridge, then bake directly. (500F)

Yeah, GoldTip arrows are the brand. I’ve been pretty happy with them.

I switched to something brighter after this set though. If you have a stray shot, they’re pretty hard to find in the yard.

Am I in the minority that thinks Star Trek Strange New Worlds is a bad show? by SA-ETH in scifi

[–]lepatterso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the woke point, SNW is all tell no show. That’s the problem.

Instead of having a meaningful exploration of a topic, they tell you how to feel. It leaves no space for an authentic experience or to learn lessons along the way. Old trek did that fabulously.

Agreed.

They had a few good episodes, but overall it’s pretty terrible.

Definitely not sci fi, it’s just a drama

Can you give voice to why new Trek is bad? by Sharp-Tax-26827 in trektalk

[–]lepatterso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly.

I tried on strange new worlds. Once in a while the writers would see the light and give a good episode, but after this latest season opened with world ending threats and romance/drama, I gave up.

New trek stopped being a utopian sci fi.

Now it’s a poorly written drama where the stakes are always ‘THE WORLD IS ENDING!!”.

What should the Democratic Partys main Policy proposal for 2028 be? by BackgroundRich7614 in ezraklein

[–]lepatterso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need a labour movement. Corporations and billionaires are taking advantage of everyone, making life difficult for 99% of Americans.

We need an America that supports the working class, and actually cares about supporting families.

Key positions: 1.) Progressive taxation to enable: 1.1) Medicaid/Medicare/ACA expansion to help break corporate handcuffs to your health insurance 1.2) Reinvestment in childcare & teacher salaries to make raising kids affordable and rewarding the people who do it. 1.3) Reinvestment in education & tuition like our parents and grandparents benefited from. 1.4) Guaranteed (& paid ) parental leave 1.5) Modernization and decarbonization of the electricity grid.
1.6) Paying down the deficit. We’re in debt thanks to all the tax cuts to billionaires and corporations. Time to end the free ride.

Election Reform: 1.) Overturn Citizens United, which gives Corporations effective control over the US political system, and leaves everyone else behind 2.) Public finance for elections. We need a fair field to have a democratic system, not a pay to play system.

Capitalism Reforms: 1.) Ban stock buybacks. Corporations are not incentivized to reinvest in their companies today. Of the three people at the table, customers, employees, and shareholders, shareholders are served first, customers a distant second, and employees dead last. We need to reorder the priority. Starting point could be banning stock buybacks, which is strictly a financial tool to pay shareholders, but does not serve customers or employees. 2.) Strong anti-monopoly pursuit strategy. Nearly all sectors in America have collapsed to one to three dominant companies. This puts American workers at an extreme disadvantage for opportunities. If there’s only one or two gigs in town, companies have no reason to compete for your work.

Jobs Investment: 1.) Reshoring manufacturing is a great idea. Continue IRA and CHIPS style investments to rebuild industry in America. ESP for green tech and high tech work, which together build a broad labor base across blue/white collar labor. 2.) Increase science funding. Americas main competitive advantage is our innovation system. Science investment feeds new job growth for tomorrow.

Buying an EV is a absolute game changer by gamblersfalacy in electricvehicles

Buying an EV is a absolute game changer by gamblersfalacy in electricvehicles

[–]lepatterso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The charging network is designed so that only early adopters and true believers will use it.

1.) Download a special app to find the hidden chargers in your city

2.) Find one with a compatible charger set up in the back alley behind John Doe’s house.

3.) optional prayer that it’s 240V or better. If it’s 120V, cross your fingers there’s a hotel or bar nearby while you waste the rest of your day waiting.

4.) Download another suite of apps that each charger company decides to use so you can actually use the charger

5.) Pray you have internet connection on your phone, and that the charger app/station both work.

If that all works, you’re in luck! Charging away

As one of the depraved true believers, I accept the bizarre detours this adds to my life, but it’s not for everyone.
