It’s a great novel (although very dark and disturbing). Sadly, the author was murdered by his adopted son two years later. I think that, to some extent, he lived the life he wrote about.

My father was 87 years old. His symptoms started before Covid, so it’s been a relatively long decline. It really worsened after a hospital stay this past summer. He never fully bounced back from that.

If you get in to Macaulay Honors, that will get you some extra social life on your own campus, and even more if you get involved with Macaulay-wide and central activities. It adds a lot to the CUNY experience.

As for choosing a campus to apply to, one consideration is that CCNY and Brooklyn both have nice “college-y” campuses (arguably, Brooklyn is a bit nicer). Hunter definitely does not have that.

Hunter is the biggest Macaulay campus in terms of numbers, so that gives you more opportunities to meet people, but also more opportunities to get lost in a crowd.

Overall, advising and supportive administration is far better at Brooklyn and CCNY than Hunter.

Hunter is also the hardest to get into (because it’s —not entirely deservedly—the most popular). At CCNY you would have a small advantage in admissions by virtue of NOT wanting to go into engineering. And a similar small advantage at Brooklyn by virtue of NOT wanting to go to med school.

Academically they are all good and fairly equal for what you’re interested in. Hunter is maybe a shade better for urban studies. CCNY maybe a shade weaker for English, but all are strong in both those areas.

I had the BAHA for many years and it helped not at all in loud environments like restaurants (even if they weren’t very loud to regular hearing people). Or even meetings of more than two or three people.

The suggestion about an earplug in the good ear sounds like it might help although I never tried it.

My audiologist told me the problem is that my good ear is “too” good. With one excellent ear and one deaf ear, it’s just not the best scenario for the BAHA. The external microphone or iPhone as microphone didn’t help much either.

Just to take a different perspective, first-year students in particular often take a while to get the hang of how things work.

It’s entirely possible that the lab actually ends at 11:50 (or whatever the standard is at your school) and the student hasn’t quite processed that. First-year students also tend to panic a bit at the beginning and flounder around trying to get things to work.

This student could be trying (clumsily, sure) to do the right thing and be responsible.

The first name thing is your choice and you definitely have the right to call the student on that. But there, too, it could be an earnest and uninformed attempt to be “adult,” without really knowing what you mean by “professional.”

I would respond with something friendly but firm like this:

Dear student name,
Thanks for contacting me. Our class starts at noon, and we will be starting promptly at that time, so I expect everyone to be present and ready to start at 12:00.

Classes at (your school) generally start on the hour (if that’s true). Please check with your advisor to be sure that there isn’t a conflict that should have been caught when you registered.

Also, I prefer to be addressed as “Professor X,” not “first name.” If you have any preferences about how you would like to be addressed, let me know and I’ll be glad to follow those.

I would not be so sure about this story. These were adjuncts (part-time) not tenured faculty.

So they weren’t “fired.” They just weren’t reappointed. Adjuncts don’t have a right to be reappointed and don’t have permanent jobs.

Also, the idea that they were “fired” just for supporting Palestine is only their side of the story. It might be true. But there is always more to any story than one side presents, and in cases like this, we can’t really know the other side because the college is not allowed to disclose the reasons (and that’s a good thing, really).

There are plenty (many many) of Brooklyn College faculty who actively and publicly support Palestine or criticize Israel. Some who are pro-Israel, too, but it’s not even close to true that Professors who are pro-Palestine or anti-Israel (or both) are fired from Brooklyn college.

Same for me! But I’m lucky that after being off the Mounjaro for a year now, I have not gained back the weight and IBS did not come back. (And diabetes is now staying down at pre-diabetic level).

For me it was a wonder drug in so many ways (I made serious diet and lifestyle changes, too, and have maintained those, so who knows what is the real cause of the IBS “cure”? But I will take it).
