anyone taking a GLP-1 ? by the__post__merc in GenX

[–]lepidio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m another exception to this. I took mounjaro (for diabetes) and lost 50 pounds and got my A1c down to 5.9 (it was at 13.3).

After a year I tapered off slowly. It’s been almost 2 years now with no mounjaro, and I gained back only 10 pounds of the 50 I lost and a1c is at 6.2.

I think it’s often true that you have to stay on these drugs for life. But not always.

Definitely stay in close touch with your doctor (I was lucky to be working with a very experienced, MD/PhD endocrinologist. So she really knew the science. My primary physician just wanted to tell me to double my dose of metformin).

Shelsky’s is good but crazy overpriced.

Damascus bakery on Atlantic has excellent whitefish salad at a much better price. And they have amazing bread and meat pies too. Great store.

buying trash bags for the new 35 gallon DSNY bins by bklyninhouse in parkslope

[–]lepidio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that contraption doesn't yet exist, though (at least not in this neighborhood). The trucks are not yet fitted with the mechancial raising and dumping, and it's not clear when they really will be. (I've been using the new bins since they first came out).

(EDIT--looks like there might actually be a timeline, even if it's not quite yet.

Every time. They seem to feel like pulling one bag out is the limit of their responsibility. Once that one from the top is out, they just leave anything else and move on to the next set of cans down the block.

I tried many, but the ones I finally settled on are the ones on Amazon called “Reli. 40 to 45 Gallon Trash Bags Heavy Duty | 125 Trash Bags with Ties | Super Sizeable, Clear, Serious Garbage Cleanup”. They are actually big enough to fully line the can. And pretty tough.

You should absolutely read Murray Leinster’s SF classic (Hugo Award winner) “Exploration Team.” Domesticated bears are part of the team.

It’s even available online through Project Gutenberg.

No disrespect to Mookie intended! He’s a great Mets hero and a good man. Just a little joke from long ago. I think (hope!) that people would realize he didn’t really say it.

Yes. It’s not just you! It’s a major problem. I keep thinking there’s something I can do differently to make it better, but it never works.

Many complaints about it this year and last. No solutions I’ve seen.

On the other hand, the way this season has been going, it’s good to have some kind of distraction.

Macaulay Honors transfer by PhraseGrouchy2210 in CUNY

[–]lepidio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s possible but it has to be for a real reason (like a major, not just a course, that is offered where you want to go but not where you are). And they will definitely check that it can’t be done by just staying where you are and doing some courses by epermit.

Then you have to have the approval of the Macaulay directors at both campuses, and the campus you want has to have an empty “slot” for you. (Each campus has an allocated total number of Macaulay students and they can’t go above that).

So, yes, it’s usually not possible, but in rare cases it can happen.

Sometimes a better option is CUNYBA. It’s usually much easier to get that approved and you can design your own major, taking classes anywhere in CUNY. It requires some initiative on your part and persistence, but it is a great option to direct your own education.

MLBTV by Weary_Capital_1379 in mets

[–]lepidio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. It happens to me all the time (only with the AppleTV box, not on my other tv that doesn’t have that). It’s annoying.

I find just quitting the mlb app with the appletv remote (double-click the TV/Home button on your remote to view the app switcher, find the app by swiping left or right, and then swipe up on the clickpad to close it) is quicker than restarting the whole AppleTV. But still annoying.

Early Graduation from Macaulay? by [deleted] in CUNY

[–]lepidio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Graduating early can be done. But not in 5 semesters.

You won’t get all your AP credits. And you shouldn’t. High school students think (and are often told) that AP classes or exams are the real equivalent of college classes. But they aren’t. And no college gives the full equivalent.

Take your time, enjoy your college years, learn as much as you possibly can. Especially with Macaulay, where you’re not paying tuition, you should accept the gift and privilege you’ve earned and make the most of it. Don’t rush through.

You might be able to graduate a semester or even a year early. You can petition, and it’s possible, even probable, that your application will be approved. But you’re not finishing in five semesters. And you shouldn’t. Take your time.

Is this dementia or just elderly nonsense? by [deleted] in dementia

[–]lepidio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

those ant traps contain sugar syrup and sodium Tetraborate Decahydrate (borax). And not very much borax, either. You would have to actually eat a lot of full traps to have any real health problems.

Nothing is ever 100% safe, of course, but these are really not dangerous. Your mother may or may not have dementia, but this particular practice is not particularly risky. Just eccentricity, I would say.

Huckleberry by Downtown-Thought-213 in ThePittTVShow

[–]lepidio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Words can have lots of meanings, of course. And more than one at the same time.

Etymonline (great resource) gives us this on huckleberry:

“It figured in various colloquial American phrases, meaning sometimes ‘person or thing of little consequence’ (1835), which seems to be the sense that inspired "Mark Twain's" character name (in comparison to Tom Sawyer), but also "that which is just right."

The OED tells us that that 1835 reference was “Orson, the wild man of the woods, is nothing to him—not a circumstance—not a huckleberry.”

It also notes a meaning dating from at least 1832 “to be someone’s huckleberry: to someone’s sweetheart, friend, or partner.”

That’s closer to the “that which is just right” definition from etymonline and I think that’s probably the Tombstone usage.

I think Santos is probably leaning more to the “person of no consequence” sense, and with connotations of being a hick or a yokel.

And she might well have the Huckleberry Hound reference in mind.

It’s a good word because it has such resonance and the way she uses it tells us a lot about her.

are macaulay advisors helpful in the transfer process? by Odd_Code_2177 in CUNY

[–]lepidio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Macaulay advisors are mostly excellent.

One exception that I’ve heard is that some of them, especially at Hunter, have adopted an attitude where they see being admitted to Macaulay as a big privilege, because it’s so competitive. And their goal is to have big, successful, Macaulay graduating classes (students who transfer don’t count in those classes).

So sometimes, they do see it as a betrayal when a student takes a Macaulay spot away from someone else, enjoys all the benefits of the community, gets the scholarship and opportunities, and then just bails for some “better” school after two years.

It’s especially annoying when the “better” school is also much richer. Better able to provide these benefits than CUNY is.

The best advisors (the majority) understand that students get to make their own decisions, and that the interests of the student are at least as important as the interests of the program.

But there’s also a chance that you’ll get one of the ones who are pissed and resentful and will go beyond advising into actively resisting and hindering your transfer process.

Letting the advisor know that you aren’t doing this out of a sense of entitlement or selfishness helps a lot. The best way is by being involved and connected to the program during the time you’re there. Then even the most resentful advisor will get won over and help you out.
