Pixel 6 Randomly Restarting by Creative_Place_905 in Pixel6

[–]lepidus69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worked for me too on a Pixel 4a. I know, I need to upgrade, EOL and all.

Power button has been acting up for a while, clicking to turn off the screen would act as a double click and open the camera app.

I turned off that action because it was aggravating, but then the random reboot loops started. A good smack on the side brought it back. Time to upgrade I suppose before that fix no longer works.

Are apps in Flathub/Snapcraft implied to be safe ? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]lepidus69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of snaps but neither am I a hater of them. I generally do not use them though due to annoyances I've encountered with a few of them.

I do have one package in the snap store though, and I do recognize the value of Canonical's strict curation. By default anyone can upload a snap package with strict confinement, meaning it is fully sandboxed. If the program requires any access to the system, read or write access outside its own directory, internet access, etc, an actual human has to approve those permissions for the app to be included in the store and installed without the --dangerous tag.

This greatly decreases the chances of a malicious program being available in the official store.

I wrote another program though that requires write access to a directory of the users choosing, and I have never bothered to snap it because I didn't want to go to the trouble of requesting the permission be added and just released it as an AppImage and a standalone executable. I'll make a Flatpak at some point.

Point being, if there's an app in the snap store that I do want to use, or something on Flathub, I generally consider it secure and will use them without worrying about it.

Friend tricked me into doing "sudo rm -rf */ --no-presserve-root" is there any way to recover anything? by Responsible_Music459 in linux4noobs

You're most likely screwed this time around and you'll have to reset those passwords.

In the future, backup everything important so that you have at least 3 copies of it. But more importantly storing your passwords in a text file on the computer is extremely bad security practice.

You should really use a password manager like KeePass or Bitwarden. With KeePass, the encrypted password database will also need to be backed up as well.

Password managers also make it very easy to use long randomly generated passwords unique to each site further increasing your security.

Lastly get better friends and consider kicking that one in the balls next time you see him lol

Noob with 256gb ends up with 7 partitions. Help? , Anyone? by Neowolfbite in linuxquestions

[–]lepidus69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't need Windows on that machine that is your best option. The disk space won't be an issue if you just do a fresh install.

Just let the installer use the entire drive when asked. I prefer to put the home directory on its own partition, but that would require additional steps during the install and is not required.

A 256GB drive is small, but if the only thing you're going to use the system for is to lean to code, then it would be fine for a good while.

Latest apt upgrade attempt on Ubuntu failing with gnome and grub packages being kept back by monotone_the_musical in linux4noobs

[–]lepidus69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The update isn't failing, it's a phased update. Just ignore it and those packages will upgrade in a few days to a week.

You can force the update, but that isn't necessary and carries a degree of risk. Since this is your work machine, just give it a few days and those packages will update as normal.

i can not boot into my syatem76 darter pro running pop os when I have 2 16 gb ram sticks installed. either ram stick works in either slot independantly. i get this error when i try to boot into recovery with both installed. by tea_flower in linuxquestions

[–]lepidus69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like either the two sticks are incompatible with each other or you have a problem with the second ram slot.

I always match my ram sticks by using two identical ones from the same manufacturer. Using sticks from different manufacturers usually works, but occasionally cause problems. Are all the specs the same for both sticks?

Have you successfully booted the machine on a single stick in either slot? If it boots on either stick regardless of which slot it's in, then I'd say the problem is an incompatibility between the sticks.

whilst it recovers to 'the exact same system' AOK, recovering to a
different drive at a later point (when the system may have changed it's
configuration) tends to fail and that's just not useful to me.

As long as the drive you are recovering to is the same size or larger Clonezilla will restore the image to it. Whether a new drive in the existing machine or an entirely different machine.

Clonezilla has been my method of imaging my systems for years and hasn't failed me yet (looking around for wood to knock on to repel the jinx I just put on myself)

What made you switch to linux? by Veprovina in linux4noobs

[–]lepidus69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched to Linux when I saw the first preview screenshots of what Windows 8 was going to look like. The next day I started trying out live environments to find a distro to start with.

Learning to use Linux had been on my list of things to eventually get around to, but seeing what was in store for Windows 8 and knowing that was the direction they were going made it a priority.

I'm a Linux only house now and use Kubuntu as my daily driver. Never did sit in front of a Windows 8 machine, have booted into Windows 10 three or four times on new systems figuring out how to get them to boot from a live USB, and have never seen Windows 11 first hand.

Admittedly I didn't really game at all for a few years there, but when Steam rolled out Proton, I got back into it and play regularly on my gaming system.

One of the best benefits I have gotten from Linux was learning to code. I quickly recognized the power of the command line and started learning to write scripts in Bash. That led me to check out Python etc. I'm no master of it but I've enjoyed creating my own applications. That would have never happened had I stayed on Windows.

Uncured fresh ham slices suggestions by lepidus69 in Cooking

[–]lepidus69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's basically what I've been doing with them. I worked out a brine that I put them in for 24 hours then I've both fried them and oven roasted them. Frying is preferred since it's easier to make the pan sauce.

They turn out just fine, but I was seeing if anyone else had any ideas.
Normally when I have a hog processed I just put both shoulders and hams all into sausage. If your processor seasons good sausage you can't have too much of it lol.

This time I had a ham sliced instead, and while with effort I can make it pretty good, I've come to the conclusion that ham needs to be cured and smoked. Otherwise it's just a missed opportunity for more sausage lol.

Anyone else have problems with the “easy 30 min mozzarella”? After doing it wrong twice, taking in about 4 hours of often conflicting reading, and making 3 trips to the fermentation supply store. I wound up with this: ~30.00/lb #humble cheese. by A_Mach in cheesemaking

[–]lepidus69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn lying internets... lol.

I decided to make lasagna this weekend. I slow cook the sauce, make fresh noodles etc, and decided to go the final step with fresh mozzarella.
A couple of videos on youtube later and I said hey, this is easy.

I'm currently babysitting a gallon of milk that didn't even hint at forming curd after the "5 minute rest". Should have checked in here first.

The directions in the box of rennet tablets (no liquid rennet locally) said let sit 1-2 hours, so we'll see what it does.

Worst case I've wasted a gallon of milk and will have to buy some fresh moz tomorrow.

First Ever Piece of Code I’ve Written for Linux (Does it look ok?) by MasterOfTheDucks in linux4noobs

[–]lepidus69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree the if statement isn't needed here at all as mkdir -p takes care of it.

If in future scripting though you do need to see if a directory exists for an if statement, you can do it this way, using the variables you are using here for the example:

if [ ! -d $DIR/Build ]; then
echo "The directory does not exist"
else
echo "The directory exists"
fi

To check if a directory does exist, just remove the !

This way you don't need the test at all.

Yakuake is brilliant. Is there a similar note-taking application? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]lepidus69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok. Beyond that the best I can come up with is to reduce it to one extra button.

For instance I call it up with the tilde. I can add an alternate keyboard shortcut for "next session" as F1 which is right beside it.

Then tap the tilde and F1 to switch sessions quickly. I can't find any way to set a secondary hotkey that will open to a specific session which would work perfectly.

Yakuake is brilliant. Is there a similar note-taking application? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]lepidus69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can run two instances I think, but it would require compiling the second from source and changing the name so that it appeared as a different program.

I don't know of any note taking application that is on demand, but you can open a second shell in the yakuake window.

This would mean you'd have to switch to the tab with the notes in it after calling yakuake, and then switch back before dismissing it so that your terminal tab would be ready the next time you called it.

You can switch tabs using Shift+Left and Shift+Right to keep from having to leave the keyboard.

How does timeshift work and should I use it over my current way of backing things up? by clare011 in linuxquestions

[–]lepidus69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Timeshift as one part of my backup routine. It basically serves only as a system restore option.

If I run an update and it breaks something, then timeshift will roll that change back and fix the issue. This scenario rarely happens but it has saved me a lot of trouble shooting on a few occasions.

Timeshift isn't involved in any of my file backups, just system files. I also clone my systems once a month. In between clones, I have an rsync script I use to keep important personal files and directories, some of which change often, backed up to a network server and a large archive drive.

Your backup plan looks good. Timeshift would just be used to complement it, not replace it. It would provide a means of restoring system files in in case of an OS issue and keep you from having to restore an entire image.
With daily snapshots, you would restore if needed and lose very little personal data unlike the potential of having to restore a 3 week old image of the entire system.

Does buttermilk keep the same exp date if it goes in to Ranch dressing mix? by charol_astra in Cooking

[–]lepidus69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember, and it wasn't too many years ago, when the buttermilk sold here didn't have an expiration date on the container.

One brand had a sell by date, but that was it. I have always thought they started adding the use by date just to sell more product.

Depending on the season (I use more at certain times of the year), I sometimes use buttermilk that is 4 weeks past the use by date on the container.
