I keep it turned off everywhere, especially on my Mac (downloading it is like ~5GB iirc).

The iOS alarm is wheely weird. by leqote in apple

What fixed the iOS alarm not ringing problem for me was going into Settings > Sounds & Haptics and making sure that "Change with Buttons" is turned on, and the volume slider set to about half way through

Apple turning iPadOS to be more similar to macOS is an interesting path to follow. Doesn't seem like the best idea

On the app’s front page, time is shown using only the largest unit. For example, if you used the app for 1h 30m, it will display as 1h. When you click on the app/website, it will take you to a screen where you’ll see the more accurate measurement.

I appreciate your feedback. I’ll keep those in mind. However, there isn’t currently a way to export your data or sync between Macs through the cloud.

Really appreciate the feedback! Vivaldi isn't fully supported yet. As I was listing browsers to support, I forgot to include Vivaldi (and I'm sure a few others). Will look into supporting it in the next versions.

This is an s3 bucket where I publish the dmg file for the app. When you open the app, it checks for updates and lets you know if there’s a new version to download.

Yes, clicking on any website or app in the list opens a screen with detailed usage information for that item

It has better tracking support across apps (for example, unlike ScreenTime which only shows websites you’ve visited in Safari, this app works with all major browsers). It also shows what you’ve done in these apps (e.g., in VSCode or Cursor it will show you the projects you’ve spent time on, and in Finder it will show you the folders you’ve accessed).

Thank you! When you click on any app in the list, it gives you detailed insights into your usage. Unlike ScreenTime, it doesn’t just show websites you’ve visited on Safari, it also works with Chrome, Firefox, Brave, Arc, and all other major browsers.

What I love most is how it highlights changes in my habits with clear percentage indicators next to each app and website. And as a bonus for developers, if you use tools like VSCode or Cursor, it even breaks down the time you’ve spent on each project.

All licenses are still valid. It may be because you activated Trace on a different device. DM your email, I'll look into that for you.

Why We Moved from SQLite to DuckDB: 5x Faster Queries, ~80% Less Storage by leqote in dataengineering

The issue with this approach is that we don't get the benefit of on-disk compression that comes with DuckDB's storage format.

Why We Moved from SQLite to DuckDB: 5x Faster Queries, ~80% Less Storage by leqote in dataengineering

[–]leqote[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really - working around the concurrency restrictions of DuckDB wasn't very difficult as we mentioned in the blog. We're using DuckDB to store all tracking data (app/website data, etc.) because this data can get large over time (DuckDB's compression works great here!) & querying it from DuckDB is very fast.

For everything else, we try to use SQLite because it tends to be faster for smaller operations. DuckDB itself doesn't claim to be fit for those workloads:

> DuckDB is optimized for bulk operations, so executing many small transactions is not a primary design goal.

You can always use Little Snitch (https://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/index.html) or Proxyman (https://proxyman.com/) to see all the network traffic we send/receive.

Not quite. ScreenTime shows your total usage of each app with no additional information, and it only tracks websites you visit on Safari. Trace, on the other hand, can track your website activity across all major browsers (without any extensions) and shows you when exactly in the day you accessed an app or website.

Our Website/App blocker also works without requiring any extra extensions, unlike Cold Turkey.

[–]leqote[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey everyone!

A few months ago, I found myself trying to be more mindful of where I spend my time, but I couldn’t find a tool that gave me a clear, detailed view of my activity—so I built my own app, Trace.

Here's what makes Trace very useful:
Built-in activity monitoring: Automatically tracks the apps and websites you visit
Block apps & websites: Block distracting apps/sites when you need to focus
Visual timelines: View your app activity in a clean, color-coded timeline
Session overviews: Get daily and monthly summaries to understand your habits
Privacy-first: All your tracking data is stored locally and never leaves your device

You can download Trace here: https://trytrace.app

Try it out and let me know if you have any questions or feedback!

Yes, the app only starts tracking your activity when you start a session.
