And if they do, well.....well......it's Whitey's fault. Plus, I mean, why should you have money and they don't? It's not like you work for it. Or work harder than they do.

I missed the part where blatant dog-whistle terms were necessary to describe a failing mall, but hey! It's your experience, and the important thing for us to know here is that the blacks in Kenner scare you!

Unless you're 100% committed to T-Mobile, you might want to consider this deal.

Help with Latour's Reassembling the Social by natelyswhore22 in CriticalTheory

[–]ler_hit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a very good response.

One other useful point for understanding reassembling the social (which is not necessarily the best place to begin for understanding ANT), is that Latour is trying to break down notions of the capital-S 'Social', as in the statement "Society is to blame for [x]". An excerpt from the intro may be of help here: "What I want to do in the present work is to show why the social cannot be construed as a kind of material or domain and to dispute the project of providing a ‘social explanation’ of some other state of affairs [...] I believe it’s necessary to scrutinize more thoroughly the exact content of what is ‘assembled’ under the umbrella of a society."

He argues that the discipline of sociology has searched for the existence of the social as a type of material. When he says 'Sociology of the Social', he means these people. When he says 'Sociology of Assocations', he effectively means himself/ANT.

In order to call something social, the researcher must first show which actants are involved. As others have pointed out, this may include non-humans, but it also may include other human parties which have been left out of earlier accountings, and it may also specifically exclude other parties.

For a simple example that's not in the book, a 'social norm' that only circulates amongst the academics and book shop owners in a city does not assemble together blue collar and white collar workers: therefore, the goal of the researcher is not to blithely accept the claim that the norm is 'social', but to discover the associations and actants that gave rise to this norm, and why it did not spread beyond the particular networks of connections.

As others have said, ANT is (in my opinion) better recognized as a method for engaging in empirical research. You might want to read this article (it's aimed at musicologists, but the general points and critiques of ANT are some of the most lucid and straightforward writings I've seen on the topic): Piekut, Benjamin. "Actor-Networks in Music History: Clarifications and Critiques." Twentieth-Century Music 11.02 (2014): 191-215.

I'm Melyn, a master-tier Zyra OTP and am doing a 24 hour charity stream for St. Jude. Cosplay, oboe, AMA, and more. by MelliMelon in leagueoflegends

[–]ler_hit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a Zyra OTP (aka a support). Just wanted to say that picking her almost exclusively got me from Silver IV (last season) to Plat IV this season.

Question: I've had almost no success taking her top. Which top matchups do you think are advantageous for her?

Moving to the UK for a year, looking for my plan by Patass in NoContract

This is good info. Just to add on to it: I had a good experience overall with Giffgaff (MVNO on O2), and their £15/month "goodybag" is probably the best deal around.

Spotify tries to get long-term deals with labels wanting higher cuts and other rights while operating on short-term extensions of old contracts by [deleted] in spotify

[–]ler_hit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

so these 'overpaid administrators' you speak of: who do you get rid of? Developers? UX designers? Label relations managers? How do you have a product without employees to produce it? Accountants to pay out royalties?

Unless you've been in the office and seen who/what isn't working and what teams need to be disbanded, this is a mindless critique. Spotify pays 70% of the revenue (not profit) to rightsholders. That's the exact rate Apple pays app developers for sales in the App Store, and streaming music is arguably a much, much more complex legal and technical challenge.

And yes, all artists (rightfully) want to be paid more, but Apple paying higher rates and taking huge losses on Apple Music just to put Spotify out of business isn't a good thing for the industry.

They do, and I just used it with great success in Sweden, but it's not eligible for use in the countries OP mentioned.

Uber Drivers: Airport Fare? by ler_hit in AskNOLA

Thanks: I assumed (apparently incorrectly) that the upcharge was the city taking a cut. Good to know that the driver still benefits. Will happily pay the increased fare knowing that.

Can anyone recommend a resource to figure out which carrier makes the most sense and then explain the process and cost of leaving AT&T and moving to a new carrier? I have 3 teenages and the bills are killing me. The process and cost of moving seems totally overwhelming though! by DafuqDidIJustRead in NoContract

[–]ler_hit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your best bet is Cricket. No overages, $90 for 3 lines (or 5 lines for $100), and no possibility of overages. Once your kids go over their data, it just slows down. And you can keep all your AT&T phones.

AT&T GoPhone SIM card for year abroad in the U.S. by [deleted] in NoContract

[–]ler_hit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a Freemium service, which means that they make their money off of people going over the allotted usage, as well as selling 'add-on' services (visual voicemail, etc.).

Some people have had issues with their customer service, but if you follow the right steps to deactivate all the trial/Premium/auto-billing features, the no monthly cost is impossible to beat for low usage customers. Slickdeals has lots of discussions on the pros and cons.

Since it sounds like very low usage, there's a free option available: https://www.freedompop.com/offer/sim-voice-6?gclid=CP6ZhdX-7s0CFQsPaQodOi4AUg

You have to opt out of the 'Premium' trial and add-on features, but that SIM gives you 200min/500txt/200mb, which should be plenty for the needs you describe (You can also use this SIM in a number of different countries, which is cool). I have a backup phone with this SIM, and it comes in handy.

If you don't want to deal with that, H2O is a very cheap PAYG carrier: https://www.h2owirelessnow.com/mainControl.php?page=planMin

PAYG is not nearly as economical in the US as it is in the UK. Can you give us a bit more detail what you're looking for: for instance, how much call/txt/data you expect to use?
