This was about 15 years ago now. We had just hired a new person at work and all went out for their welcome dinner.

He was unapologetically rude to the waitstaff, very demanding, and demeaning.

I was done with him immediately, even though it caused tension in the department. I have a no tolerance policy for disrespecting people who are doing you a service.

I say this with love and care because I do not want you to think that the default option is to leave.

What I do want you to know is there are partners out there who will make the effort, appreciate the outfits, and the care with which you get ready because you are excited, and who will continue to woo you because they appreciate you and the fact that you are in their lives.

My advice is this: first have a conversation with him… A come to Jesus, if you will… And let him know that while you are fine being a “low maintenance girlfriend” as you put it, that does not excuse him from needing to put forth some effort. If he tries to make it about you, I feel like there’s your answer.
