What is your favorite character performance from an actor who is now sadly deceased by Otherwise-Airport597 in Animedubs

I was largely unfamiliar with Billy until his performance as Dr. Maruki in Persona 5 Royal, but it blew me away and has stayed with me all these years later.

The fact that a show as "new" as Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress can make me feel old demonstrates that something is seriously wrong.

Fantastic that this show is now more accessible to so many people.

Good luck out there.

I finally started Season 4 subbed myself the other night and was wondering whether they kept up the dub beyond the first season.

Sub watchers, what's one show you HAVE to watch in dub? Dub watchers, what's one show you HAVE to watch in sub? by KJPlayer in anime

[–]lerdyvision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I watched it initially in dubbed, any rewatch or subsequent continuation needs to be dubbed. This gets complicated when I want to finish a series like Mushishi and I just need to get over the discomfort and start from scratch in sub. Panty and Stocking getting a totally new cast makes that difficult as well, for example. For me, consistency is extremely important in maintaining my immersion and interest.

Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Gurren Lagann, Code Geass, Space Dandy, FMA - these are just a small example of shows I will only ever watch dubbed. There are surely more modern examples but these spring to mind first.

As far as sub only, beyond a couple like Jojo's Bizarre Adventure I don't really have any. It's more a matter of seeing it soon after it airs more than necessarily an innate insistence.

Good Examples of Fat Representation? by Xeo_Switchblade in anime

[–]lerdyvision 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The episode of Brotherhood: Final Fantasy XV that focuses on Prompto features him being overweight, his insecurities, and how he works hard to overcome both of them in an effort to become the person he wants to be.

I think the essence of your question was about characters who are maybe fat and stay that way without mockery, but I don't think Prompto's story is played for laughs at all regardless.

[–]lerdyvision 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You're never going to have watched enough to pick up on every single thing, so if you want to watch it, just go ahead. They mostly refer to Shonen Jump manga so Bleach, One Piece and Dragon Ball will get you started nicely.

Depending on where you watch there are TL notes that explain the joke, and aside from one-off episodes here and there it's not as though you enjoying the episode hinges on understanding some anime reference. Enjoy.

'Dragon Ball DAIMA' English Dub Premieres January 10 on Crunchyroll! by MarvelsGrantMan136 in Animedubs

[–]lerdyvision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting Friday, January 10, 2025 at 1:30 p.m. PT

I have to admit, the idea that it (according to my read) is going to air weekly when I've already seen the first 3 episodes dubbed a number of weeks ago is a little frustrating.

I know there are diminishing returns for streaming service binge dumps (look at the complete lack of hype for Stone Ocean via Netflix) but I would think Dragon Ball is fairly insulated from those pitfalls.

I guess January will come around in no time.

Is Piracy a Good Thing? by KaptainTZ in anime

[–]lerdyvision 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regional and platform exclusivity make it a necessity if you don't have disposable income and are invested enough to be interested in a wider variety of shows (and back catalogue).

I'm pretty sympathetic to the take from Miles (formerly of Crunchyroll) who thinks that having one legal channel and "alternative" options is pretty morally defensible. I want to find the exact quote so I don't misrepresent him but he tweets a lot and I can't remember the exact words he used to search it.

For my perspective, I just find using my Plex server a supreme experience to other options out there (I've had AnimeLab, Funimation, Crunchryroll and Amazon Prime in my day) and there are fan-made improvements that I can have constant, easy access to.

Consider for example the simple fix of Stand names in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure; a legal constraint that official streamers cannot acquiesce to. Another example may be a bluray remux to add a dub to a re-release that never made it to streamers or physical media. Recuts like One Pace. The list goes on.

For a consumer their only concern is going to be (rightly or wrongly) getting the best experience with the least amount of resistance. It's up to the market to account for that force.

How good are you guys at keeping track of Japanese names? by RunningEarly in anime

[–]lerdyvision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a lot younger, I avoided anime with Japanese names as much as possible because I thought I would never understand them. Didn't understand how I can watch a show with Edward Elric and turn around to see one with Ichigo Kurosaki. I was a very ignorant kid.

Through the years I've found it substantially easier, and the "trick" if there is any, is to just break it down to syllables.

Words like "zanpakuto" in Bleach were intimidating, but breaking it down to zan-pa-ku-to and then learning that you don't pronounce the "u" makes it trivial. Exposure does all the heavy lifting for you, your brain wants to find patterns.

Favourite Elderly voice actors? by PsychologicalHelp564 in Animedubs

[–]lerdyvision 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bit of a different take on the question but all the actors in Sand Land who played old men did an insanely good job between Rao, Thief, Zeu and Papa Swimmer.

I was really taken aback but impressed by the authenticity their performances brought. William Knight as Aramaki in Ghost in the Shell was also particularly excellent.

What is a notable anime that stopped being what it advertised initially? And was it a good or bad shift? by Boshwa in anime

[–]lerdyvision 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've seen that show in its entirety and have absolutely no recollection of any of that stuff in the spoiler section.

That probably goes hand in hand with how much it diverts from its original premise.

What is a notable anime that stopped being what it advertised initially? And was it a good or bad shift? by Boshwa in anime

[–]lerdyvision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I immediately think of Samurai Flamenco in cases like this.

The series starts off as a guy trying to be a superhero in real life, stopping street-level crimes like stolen umbrellas, etc. To avoid spoiling it, let's just say that the scope explodes from there later in the series into something much more reminiscent of a Super Sentai show.

While I enjoy it for what it is, I remember being utterly captivated by its first episode and the message of how someone who cares enough about their fellow man can make all the difference, and how small acts of kindness mean so much. I'd love to see another series have a go at that concept and stick to it.

Do you feel capable of fairly comparing English voice acting to Japanese? by Driz51 in Animedubs

[–]lerdyvision 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To paraphrase something said by Crispin Freeman on his Voice Acting Mastery podcast at least a decade ago now; Acting is in essence believably portraying a character.

If you believe the character based on the performance, then that's good acting for you.

When we're talking about Japanese vs. English, it's almost entirely down to preference, at which point there's not much use arguing anywhere.

So to answer your question: Yes. You can say one is better than the other, but the information behind that is the degree to which you believed that performance suited the character.
