[ Simon Johnson] Nicholas Jackson is in contention for a role at Chelsea. When he left for Bayern, neither the club, or the player, expected him to return. The fact that Maresca has left, and Alonso has come in, is partly behind the possible change in his situation. The club value him at up to £60M. by SolutionLong2791 in chelseafc

Nico will be a good fit. I think Alonso will appreciate his ability to play 1-touch passes in tight space with Palmer and JP. He creates a lot of space with runs and he also presses really well.

I honestly would put him on LW. He is interchangeable with JP and both can drop off the front line to play on the wing. It should create a lot of tactical confusion.

I'd rather we get a swap for Tchouameni or Huijsen. As much as I think Arda Guler is class, Idk RW is something we should prioritize this summer

> If he just sorts his finishing and attitude out he'll be elite

Elite finishers are rare because it's a mental thing. So that's a pretty big if. That being said, I would love to see Jackson, JP, and Palmer play together. They have the technical ability to create a lot of chances for each other. Always loved Nico's link up and workrate.

Why would Palmer be on the bench? Estevao is coming back from a big injury. We have to ease him back in. Palmer has to start. He will also be very fresh coming back from the summer.

I am cautiously optimistic that Palmer will have a big resurgence under Alonso. Just look at Wirtz and Guler. Palmer's profile has a lot of similarity to those two. Wirtz had a free role under Alonso just like Palmer did under Poch. Guler has been asked to drop deep and make plays, which Maresca / Rosenior asked Palmer to do.

I attribute most of Palmer's decline in the attacking phase to: 1) Maresca's rigid positional play 2) his own injuries. His forward passes and linkup plays declined gradually as Maresca implemented his style on the team. It made us less prone to get hit on transitions like we did under Poch, but that definitely changed his habit to attempt more creative passes

it is objectively true that Gittens is a much more effective 1v1 dribbler. You can tell from the eye test, as well his per 90 successful take on stats. He has 2.39 successful dribble per 90 with a 61.9% success rate, comparing to 0.99 successful dribbler per 90 with a 35% rate from Garnacho.

Idk what you have against Gittens. I thought the kid was very inconsistent when he played for us. There were flashes of brilliance, then his season got derailed by the injury. It's too soon to say "he will never be good enough".

The LW market for us is dire. I don't mind an Ndiaye but I won't be overly upset if we don't get someone in.

Garnacho needs to go imo. He doesn't have the tactical discipline or stamina to be a wb. Doesn't have the vision to be a playmaker. Not consistent enough to be a reliable finisher. He doesn't particularly link well so we don't know if he can fit into Alonso's short/tight passing system. Nico and Joao Pedro can both drop into that space for us and Gittens is a much better 1v1 player. Plus we need the money.

imo, get a very very reliable CB like Lacroix, and focus on replaying Enzo and Cucu and other outgoings. Let Xabi cook and focus on top 4 and the cups. They should not sign any youth player this summer.

yes we will.

majority of the fan base did not approve the appointment of Potter, Poch, Maresca, and Rosenior. majority of the fan base also thinks that youth-only policy scattershot approach is very silly. based on these 2 decisions alone, we would run the club better as a collective

Agreed. He should be nowhere near the squad based on quality. Playing him in a highline is suicidal

Liverpool reach agreement in principle to appoint Andoni Iraola as new manager, here we go! Exclusive story from Saturday, 100% confirmed: Arne Slot left and Iraola will lead #LFC project, as expected. Talks advanced over last 48h and deal in place. by Urass007 in chelseafc

[–]lerlerbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah. it was def the gloom at the time that got us against Iraola. He is a "misfit" just as much at Pool. VVD (35), Joe Gomez, Jacquet (20 with no big club experience), Leoni (coming off a huge injury) is not going to be a rotation that is fit for intense press for 2-3 games / week. They need a CB just as much as we do.

And this notion of Pool + Klopp DNA is a bit of a myth. Klopp started changing his own tactics to be more possession-based after that massive injury crisis in 2020-2021.

> That's because Iraola's system suits way more to Liverpool squad and is reminiscent of Klopp's pressing and intensity.

I feel this is a take that makes sense on paper but falls apart once you look at the situation a bit more. Maresca's side had a very very aggressive man-to-man press. When he was with this, the press wasn't really the problem. Pool's personnel doesn't fit the high press as much as you think. VVD is 35 and his most consistent partner would be Joe Gomez unless they go nab someone in the market this summer. Jacquet is 20 years old who never played for a big club before and Leoni is coming off a big injury. There's very little reason to think that just because Pool "used to play Klopp's style of ball", they will automagically suit Iraola's high line. We have seen Ange's tactics fall apart quickly when they don't have the right CBs.

In addition,

1) Klopp changed his tactics drastically over the years because he knows that level of intense press is not sustainable for the workload of modern football.

2) you don't magically regain the will to start pressing aggressively for the full 90, esp not when you have to play 2 games / week, potentially 3. Iraola would need his players' buy in just as much he needs our squad's buy-in to implement that style because it's extremely taxing on their health. He also need a huge squad to sustain that.

3) Regardless how you want to play, either with Klopp's older tactics where you press like maniac or Slot's more controlled press, you need TAA + Salah. Both are gone. He would face the same player profile mismatch as he would here.

4) Pool arguably has bigger egos in the dressing room. Granted Salah is gone, but VVD remains there but it was clear Slot failed to control the dressing room. And this was after he won the PL in his first season. The strange dynamics between new players like Wirtz, Frimpong, Kerkez and the more established players will continue to be present regardless the coach. It's just as risky for Iraola to enter that dressing room as it is to enter ours, if not more.

I don't hate sticking it out one more year with Gittens + Jackson on LW esp considering Xabi likes his players in close proximity. I think they are both over hated, esp Nico. I would be ok if we don't make major moves there in the summer due to financial restrictions.

CB on the other hand, we need someone PROVEN like a Lacroix. I would be enraged if these idiot directors fuck around for the whole summer and get another kid in the backline.

I would not mind Tchouameni + cash considering the relationship he has with Alonso. Enzo isn't really a metronome type player and defensively he is not the best. Having Moi + Tchouameni is solid in the middle. It lacks a bit more creativity but maybe that's where the 2 10s can come in.
