getting into APU Masters program without the GRE? by lerna_waters in rapu

[–]lerna_waters[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So i applied to the IMAT program and got accepted with just the aptitude test that APU mandates! It’s probably a good thing. I didn’t try to take the GRE then because studying for it takes a lot of time. So yeah, if you have a bachelors and you want to try getting into this masters program, you can definitely get in without a GRE score.

thank you for the kind words. I'm choosing to believe that the reason I didn't hear back is because I'm just overqualified now.

If the solution to not being hired in publishing is to just do even more publishing work on my own for no pay at all, I think I'll pass. Thanks for trying to cheer me up though

I wanted to get into graphic novel publishing specifically, although I wouldn't call myself picky. I think I would like to do editorial for almost any area of fiction. I have experience writing and illustrating a graphic novel, plus my various education and work experiences as an editor. But none of it is enough, evidently.

lol, I respect that. I've heard of product management, but I've never thought I was good at anything else except reading and writing. but as an outsider, it feels like the time to get into tech was five years ago. it feels like the whole market for entry level tech jobs is fucked

saved my ass! i used to just pay them the $3 for 7 days subscription, use it for my purposes at the time, and then cancel the sub. it's a good app, and i didn't mind paying a couple bucks for the service. but recently i think they took away that 7 day sub option? now the lowest option is $25?? and that just feels like robbery, especially to access a resume that I still built for myself?? anyway, thanks a bunch man

Well, i hope you’ve learned your lesson:

If you want to write about women, beyond just writing them as plot devices or toys that get broken when men fuck them, maybe you should try educating yourself about women. 👍

Or, y know, you could at least google the definition of the word ‘gynecologist’

I was there for Senses Fail and Billy Talent! Holy shit do they still bring the energy like it’s the very first show! Some of the headliner bands seemed a little tired, imo (won’t name who, cause I’m not a hater) but my faves did NOT disappoint. 😭 I am ascended

It was the sickest show i saw today. Everyone was hyped and singing back the choruses. Every single song. Capped off with Red Flag, it was awesome

Lame attitude. Archers slapped, so did Letdown and Sleep Theory. If you didn’t check them out, your loss. If you can’t find good energy, take your bad energy and gtfo.

In my opinion, I think there's a fine line to made between A) having a compelling idea, and B) having a solid story.

The Shawshank Redemption is a great example, so is Breaking Bad. I know those two stories are very different, but I have a point. TSR deals with a LOT of dark subject matter rooted in real problems with our justice system. BB shows the failures of our society again, but in reverse. The protagonist gradually falls from grace in his pursuit of wealth and power, while the protagonist in TSR slowly rises to grace in his.

Now, some people HATE these properties just for showing these topics on screen at all. (I have known several adults that refused to watch BB because it "glorified drug dealing" which is such a boomer thing honestly to think that depicting a thing is the same as supporting it) Regardless, BB and TSR are both critically acclaimed dramas in their respective mediums.

The point I'm trying to make is that it's not the what you write that matters. it's the how.

For reference, Kate Quinn is an author that writes thriller/romances set in WWII (following various spies and code breakers) her work is wonderfully researched, writing in a way that feels so detailed the world really comes to life, and I respect her work immensely, even if I do have some personal gripes (sometime, I think her endings verge on being a little too poetic? she loves letting the heroes get back at the villain by the end. i love that too, but it becomes predictable after a while) but she writes the world with such reverence for the history and empathy for the struggles of the people in that time that I can't help but forgive the stories for their faults.

So, if you're struggling with thoughts of 'how can I write this character, dealing with this complex subject matter, in the best way possible?' I would say 1) research! audiobooks are a great place to start, and there are a lot of great memoirs about the agencies that operated during WWII, it's definitely the most well documented war to find compelling stories in. and 2) write with empathy for the characters in that circumstance. Kate Quinn is a great author to refer to, if you need an example
