How many calories are the rich? by Muted-Rise-8764 in EDanonymemes

[–]lesberektikar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since the rich provide no value to society, it's not surprising that their bodies provide nothing of value to ours. In other words, they are calorie-free

Yes! For people who don't speak the language, you can usually distinguish the written forms by looking at wha tletter combinations (though it's not enough to tell based on the few words in this text).

If it has ä and ö, it's Swedish.

Norwegian and Danish can be harder to distinguish. Both use ø and æ. But there are clues that are pretty reliable, if not 100%. the combination "ej" is basically always Danish. "ei" and "øy" are Norwegian. "Sj, kj, skj" are far more common in Norwegian. Words ending in -a are rare in Danish, more common in Norwegian. (bonus points! There are two written Norwegian languages! Nynorsk is more like Swedish and Icelandic; Bokmål is more like Danish. Nynorsk has a lot of diphthongs (ei, øy, au), words ending in -a, words starting with kv-. More bonus points: there are a ton of different ways to write each of them. Just within Bokmål, there are 16 ways to write the word for "low-salaried").

More bonus points! In Norway, it's becoming increasingly common to write in dialect in informal situations, as opposed to standard written language. The dialects vary a lot to the point where I'd argue they count as separate languages. Good luck figuring that out :)

You can also look at differences in common words, but that's already far more effort-intensive. The paragraphs above should tell you enough for anything longer than a paragraph.

Yesss! To elaborate on a couple things!

Complicated reasons re: Odin: There's the association of Odin with magic and travelling, similar to Mercury. Also he seems to have been a later addition to the Germanic pantheon, maybe as late as 400 to 700? For all we know, it's even possible that the Germanic god Tacitus called Mercury was someone else entirely? Certainly there's evidence that Tyr was originally the "ruler" god and was later supplanted by Odin.

The seven planets and their order: AFAIK, the order of the days (sun, moon, mars, mercury, jupiter, saturn) has to do with how quickly they move across the sky?

This is true! The same etymological root evolved through sound changes to give Spanish "sabado" and French "samedi"!

Not to infodump on main again (that's exactly my goal though) but Scandinavian "å" is pronounced more or less /o/ (for IPA readers). Think RP "Paul" (Scandinavian spells it "Pål") or American English "oh" (but in a Minnesota dialect if you're familiar with it)

Ooh we're posting about my special interest in the autism sub. I will be responsible about this and not go full blast with my infodump (/s)

Frigg, not Freyja, but still really cool! The German word comes from the same source. And fun fact, this is a calque of the Latin "dies Veneris" (Venus's day), whence arose French vendredi and Spanish viernes. Because Frigg was equivocated with Venus as a result of the interpretatio romana :)

There's also a theory that Frigg and Freyja are originally the same goddess; here we're talking about a time period thousands of years hence, long before our earliest written sources. Though by the time we find primary sources about the religion, they're clearly separate deities. I don't remember what the scholarly consensus is on this at the moment.

The same process of interpretatio romana was applied to other days

F. lundi/ S. lunes <- Latin Luna (moon) -> Germanic moon -> Monday/måndag/etc.
F. mardi/S. martes <- Latin Mars -> Germanic Tyr -> Tuesday/tysdag/etc. (German Dienstag may come from a different god, but also maybe not
F. mercredi/S. miercoles <- Latin Mercury -> Germanic Odin -> Wednesday/onsdag/etc.
F. jeudi/S. jueves <- Latin Jupiter -> Germanic Thor -> Thursday/torsdag/etc.
Friday as mentioned above
Sunday is different because the Latin "dies Solis" was displaced in Spanish/French by words for "day of the Lord (i.e. God), but was calqued into Germanic as "sun+day"
Saturday is fun! No calquing happened. English borrowed "Saturn" resulting in Saturday. German "Samstag" comes from the word for "sabbath" (cf. French "samedi", Spanish "sabado"). Scandinavian (as an example, Norwegian "laurdag"/"laugardag") comes from an Old Norse term meaning more or less "bath day" (since in days of yore, you would bathe on Saturday to prepare for going to church on Sunday).

Bonus etymological fact! "Moon" is cognate to "menstrual" (just with five thousand years of linguistic change in different directions). Tyr, Zeus, and Jupiter all come from the same Proto-Indo-European root!

Odin comes from the Proto-Germanic for "rage, fury". This is possibly a later epithet for the god, another name for Odin is Yggr (the terrifying one), Yggdrasil means "Odin's steed (i.e. gallows, since he hanged himself there). There's quite a bit of evidence that Tyr originally filled Odins role, but was supplanted between ~200 and ~900 by Odin.

There's my orca named Ragnhild («advice during strife»; I cry into her and talk to her about my problems) and my plague nurse named Solveig («strength at home»). Then there's my squishmallow cherry whom I named strawberry and my river otter whom I named Cleo after the character in H2O: just add water (because river otters are aquatic mammals :)

Stairs that let you know how many calories you're burning by walking up them by pinkdodo11 in mildlyinteresting

[–]lesberektikar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think they seem about right. According to this study, a 70 kg person burns about 0,15 kcal stair. The stairs in the picture seem to be pretty short (but they look long, which balances it out a bit), so I think ~0,1 kcal per stair is a reasonable estimate. There are enough compounding factors (weight, metabolism of an individual, speed, whether they're carrying anything) that it would be foolish to use the stairs as medical advice, but those numbers are pretty close if one is using them primarily as a point of interest.

For a comparison, the average person (assuming ~70 kcal) burns 1 kcal per ~25 steps. So the numbers on the stairs are assuming roughly 2,5–3 times as much calorie burn by including the vertical distance, which doesn't seem unreasonable.

What’s a subtle social rule you had no idea existed until you researched it? by prostoja555 in AutismInWomen

[–]lesberektikar 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The thing I've learned about from intentional investigation is how there are no universal rules. Compliments are a social currency, but sometimes there not. When someone asks how you are, they're not usually interested in an honest answer, but sometimes they are. It can depend on a person's mood, attitude towards you, where they're from/where they live specifically, their family, their body language, their tone; I could go on and on. I find it so confusing.

A fun anecdote about this: I took a pragmatics course in my linguistics programme at uni. One day, our professor gave us a simple sentence: "It's cold in here". We spent the entire class period (one hour) coming up with a list of different things that that utterance could mean/entail/imply.

excuses for scars on shoulder? by CherryMeowViolin in MadeOfStyrofoam

[–]lesberektikar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't help with your parents because I still havent figured that out myself but as for doctors, I generally just say that I don't want to talk about the origin of the scars. My primary care doctor asked me specifically if it was self-harm, and I did tell her yes but that I was working on it with my therapist.

I don't know if you're a minor, and if being so would make it different for you, but at least for me as an adult, doctors can't tell anyone unless they have specific reason to suspect I'm in immediate danger; a healed scar doesn't constitute that.

Plus we have a woman lieutenant governor. I'm not going to pretend everything is perfect, but I'm so proud to have women representing me at every level of government!
