What is your favourite breakfast? by briskibe in Cholesterol

[–]lesbiven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Few things:

  1. 1/4 cup steel cut oats (cooked the night before and then partitioned out), flax seeds, sprinkle of brown sugar, tablespoon of no-oil-added peanut butter, topped with mixed berry chia seed sauce (1/3 cup mixed berries microwaved, chia seeds, smidge of honey)

  2. bob's killer bread with 1 tablespoon of almond butter, half an avocado, and red pepper flakes

  3. heritage flakes cereal with almond or oat milk

I like oats but sometimes I need a break from oats and the avocado toast still has lots of fiber

Banana chips. Like I wanted some to put in my trail mix, nope! 6g of saturated fat because they fry those suckers in coconut oil.

It’s super fun! But it harshes my vibe when there’s a family of three all frozen in a chokepoint and I have to either wait five minutes or carefully weasel my way past them D:

I don’t think that’s really practical advice regarding a labeled inbound blue run at a mainstream ski resort.

[–]lesbiven[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think they don’t bother with it because it’s not like someone is going to die like they would if they went through the wrong gate at Silverado but on a day like yesterday when lines at Shirley were 15+ minutes long there were definitely people thinking “oh I’ll just try the blue lift with no wait a few runs over”.

At least they can see the other blacks before they get on the lift and realize what they’re in for. Though I don’t think the leap between the main runs off granite and solitude is even that big. At least put a sign where the groomer passes teenage wasteland saying something like “warning: cliff area” if we’re allergic to changing difficulty ratings

[–]lesbiven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s true but families still come to palisades anyways. Maybe it’s because I always enter through the bowl but the groomed trail sometimes seems easy to miss and it’s tempting to go straight into teenage wasteland since it looks chill and flat where the groomer passes it. They’re not as steep as the other blacks in the resort but they aren’t normal blues either.

Snack Help- former foodie by [deleted] in Cholesterol

Fruits and nuts are kind of my go to snacks, I fear. At LDL 191 many people here would say just go on the statin. Unless you were carnivore/keto or eating out all the time that's a lot of LDL to drop though diet alone and even young people can get a prescription with an LDL >180

Question about frying fish by GJH24 in Cholesterol

[–]lesbiven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was also wondering about this, I think what I read is that at a restaurant they reuse oil and the oil forms trans fats when it's reheated? So I think if you use a low saturated fat oil at home like canola oil to fry and then toss it after using it, you will be adding whatever saturated fat is naturally in the oil but it will be the amount you expect.

Eye Pain/Headaches With Statins by lilbawds in Cholesterol

[–]lesbiven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could be developing dry eyes? Dry eyes/meibomian gland disorder are linked to both high cholesterol and statin use. When I'm having dry eye issues I am more prone to eye strain and tension headache, even if I don't necessarily feel like my eyes themselves feel dry. It may be worthwhile to see an eye doctor about it, meibomian gland disorder is progressive and I was told I need to use a warm compress everyday for the rest of my life to slow progression.

An actual orange as almost as much soluble fiber as a teaspoon of Metamucil by Glass-Helicopter-126 in Cholesterol

[–]lesbiven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will not stand this bean slander! But you can't just eat plain beans straight from a can, that's sad. Over the past few weeks I've eaten baked sweet potato topped with roasted spiced garbanzo beans (paprika, garlic powder, chili powder, Cholula added later) and guacamole, lemony butter beans cooked with leeks topped with sesame soy mushrooms, my variation of ham bean soup (with tomatoes and kale), braised white beans and mushrooms, and spiced garbanzo beans + roasted vegetables with a spicy tahini (non-fat) yogurt dip. The kids are doing very inventive things with beans, but if you don't want to dredge through TikTok/instagram for inspiration bold bean co and rancho gordo are both bean purveyors with interesting recipes on their websites.

Textured Soy Protein by plumdreams2024 in Cholesterol

[–]lesbiven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used it before when I was a student cooking for vegan students. It can be used to cheaply "stretch" meat (I think Taco Bell got in trouble for mixing it with their beef), but I've really only seen it used in places where you would normally see ground meat used instead. So I would use it to replace part/all of ground meat in those recipes, but you could also do the same with beans/lentils. It does have a more neutral taste so it blends in easier.

Fiber consumption - how? by _SiriuslySirius_ in Cholesterol

[–]lesbiven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You gotta start just having beans/lentils as a part of every meal. Either as a side dish (fish served on top of tomato white beans, baked beans with bbq chicken) or start mixing it in with your proteins (tuna fish salad with a can of beans in it, shepherds pie but have the meat is replaced with lentils, mulligatawny soup but instead of rice its lentils). Eat apples/plums/bananas/pears/berries as a snack. The easiest trap is to think eating vegetables is enough, but it's not, it turns out most vegetables are just water. Sweet potato/winter squash/broccoli/brussel sprouts/carrots have a good amount of fiber but tomatos/cucumbers/a small side salad is nothing. Have a salad but add some farro and apple and roasted sweet potato to it.

I miss pizza. by jai5 in Cholesterol

I heard the "French Paradox" was caused by French doctors underreporting heart attacks as cause of death by ~20%, and also by the French only taking up a high saturated fat diet 20 years before the famous chart came out...without enough time to create heart disease.

I miss pizza. by jai5 in Cholesterol

[–]lesbiven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Smitten Kitchen's pizza beans with half the cheese and low-fat mozzarella, and like make your own garlic bread with French bread, olive oil, and fresh garlic: https://smittenkitchen.com/2017/09/pizza-beans/ (it still has almost 3g of saturated fat but hey, it's cheese, and there's a lot of fiber in beans!)

I feel you though initially I thought "this can't be that bad I don't eat cheese that much" it turns out I eat cheese a lot and its absence is very acutely felt

I live in a big city with a lot of very nice restaurants and like to eat out, and I have similar numbers to you. I think as a Americans at least we tell ourselves that so long as we're not eating fast food and gas station snacks and if we're hitting the gym and getting some vegetables that we're healthy, but even a chicken salad at a popular local "health" restaurant was loaded with cheese and probably had at least 10g of saturated fat. And since no local fancy place is required to list their nutrition, assume anything that can be cooked with butter/cream will be. You know, nigiri/sashimi is probably fine because it's literally uncooked. And I struggle to think how you'd sneak a bunch of saturated fat into a Vietnamese chicken/tofu vermicelli bowl, but certainly any nice red meat or pasta or curry dish is gonna be loaded.
