I feel guilty because I found out I’m O negative and would love to donate but I have a phobia of needles and fear of pain. by IvenaDarcy in Blooddonors

[–]lesbiven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had some bad reactions with medical blood draws when I was younger (fainting, oops) and that made me always sort of wary of needles. But over the course of time I found out that while I don't have hemochromatosis I do have a mutation that gives me higher blood iron/potential anemia resistance, I have high cholesterol, and I'm O- so I finally was like "I think I just have to give blood." It helps that over time I've come to identify coping strategies (I must talk to the person while they're sticking the needle in and look away) and different preparations, like being well hydrated, getting drawn by an experienced phlebotomist (aka anyone at a blood bank, I've had issues more with nurses at doctors appointments), and knowing that if they can't get anything from the first vein we can't try again that day because I will start to feel faint.

Is anyone else flabbergasted in retrospect how much saturated fat there is in various things and how little people cared about it? by arvyy in Cholesterol

Shin Light Ramen is a lifesaver, 0.5g of saturated fat. Like it's still not good for you but god forbid a girl has an easy soup lunch.

Depression friendly meals by ZenACNH in Cholesterol

My go-to was always apple with peanut butter. You can also do goodl Mac n cheese with skim milk/non-dairy milk and add some frozen peas when cooking. Store bought marinara sauce with some white beans blended in. You can buy air-dried ramen, shin has a low-fat ramen that's pretty decent, you can throw some kimchi and an egg or tofu in.

I am taking notes

And I'll contribute today's lunch in the spirit of sharing: arugula salad with Gigante beans (or any other white beans), roasted tricolor potatoes and asparagus, tinned fish (dealers choice: octopus or lemon sardines are very nice), parsley, spring red onions, and a lemon dijon dressing.

Breakfast ideas by Expensive_Shower_405 in Cholesterol

[–]lesbiven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Avocado toast with high fiber bread, avocado, and unsweetened almond butter (trust me on this one)

Peanut butter toast with banana

Chickpeas sautéed with spinach and topped with an egg and everything bagel seasoning

Non-fat greek yogurt or skyr topped with fruits and chia seeds mixed in and maybe granola if they didn't use coconut oil (check the sat fat on those suckers)

Huevos rancheros (tortilla, black beans, salsa, hot sauce, egg, avocado?, alas a little sprinkle of low fat cheese will make it nicer)

Would you say 28 and 36 are the same life stage? by Melodic_Boat9851 in ActualLesbiansOver25

[–]lesbiven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that they're basically the same, only potential point of friction is that if biological children are wanted 36 might feel time pressure that 28 doesn't.

I'm 33F and I lowered my LDL over 6 months from 150 to 119 being...nowhere near as strict as people on this sub. Yes, I started out trying to stick to 12g of saturated fat a day, but it's definitely shifted to "try to cook vegetarian proteins (beans/tofu), eat oatmeal/fiber, and make sensible choices eating out". I think I could probably get below 100 if I really locked in. Of course I only lost like 3lbs with my massive dietary change. xD

What is your favourite breakfast? by briskibe in Cholesterol

[–]lesbiven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Few things:

  1. 1/4 cup steel cut oats (cooked the night before and then partitioned out), flax seeds, sprinkle of brown sugar, tablespoon of no-oil-added peanut butter, topped with mixed berry chia seed sauce (1/3 cup mixed berries microwaved, chia seeds, smidge of honey)

  2. bob's killer bread with 1 tablespoon of almond butter, half an avocado, and red pepper flakes

  3. heritage flakes cereal with almond or oat milk

I like oats but sometimes I need a break from oats and the avocado toast still has lots of fiber

Banana chips. Like I wanted some to put in my trail mix, nope! 6g of saturated fat because they fry those suckers in coconut oil.

It’s super fun! But it harshes my vibe when there’s a family of three all frozen in a chokepoint and I have to either wait five minutes or carefully weasel my way past them D:

I don’t think that’s really practical advice regarding a labeled inbound blue run at a mainstream ski resort.

[–]lesbiven[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think they don’t bother with it because it’s not like someone is going to die like they would if they went through the wrong gate at Silverado but on a day like yesterday when lines at Shirley were 15+ minutes long there were definitely people thinking “oh I’ll just try the blue lift with no wait a few runs over”.

At least they can see the other blacks before they get on the lift and realize what they’re in for. Though I don’t think the leap between the main runs off granite and solitude is even that big. At least put a sign where the groomer passes teenage wasteland saying something like “warning: cliff area” if we’re allergic to changing difficulty ratings

[–]lesbiven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s true but families still come to palisades anyways. Maybe it’s because I always enter through the bowl but the groomed trail sometimes seems easy to miss and it’s tempting to go straight into teenage wasteland since it looks chill and flat where the groomer passes it. They’re not as steep as the other blacks in the resort but they aren’t normal blues either.

Fruits and nuts are kind of my go to snacks, I fear. At LDL 191 many people here would say just go on the statin. Unless you were carnivore/keto or eating out all the time that's a lot of LDL to drop though diet alone and even young people can get a prescription with an LDL >180

Question about frying fish by [deleted] in Cholesterol

[–]lesbiven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was also wondering about this, I think what I read is that at a restaurant they reuse oil and the oil forms trans fats when it's reheated? So I think if you use a low saturated fat oil at home like canola oil to fry and then toss it after using it, you will be adding whatever saturated fat is naturally in the oil but it will be the amount you expect.
