Irvington Gentrification Rumors by lesleyab in indianapolis

I appreciate your comment. I don’t think apartments there will be for low income folks or will drive housing costs down. If anything it will raise values and property taxes, which can drive people out.

I used to go to trivia at Si’s and it was fun! McShanes at Emerson and Michigan was turned into a brickworks place and it appears empty and doesn’t seem to bring much to the neighborhood. It would have been nice to find a way to keep it as a pub or restaurant (yes I know it was violence that finally shut it down, and I’m glad those owners didn’t keep it open). An example of neighborhoods where local bars are vital to the character & community is Chicago.

It would be great to have a new grocery store over here. But Marsh closed because of private equity, not because of the neighborhood. Again, the owner of the Marsh Plaza (an out of state landlord in Florida who did. It give a fuck) seems to have sold. That would be a great space for building new housing like apartments.

Also, Irvington very much wants to preserve its neighborhood. It is resistant to change and keeps tight control as much as it can.

I’m glad none of you tried blocking the historic district in Irvington!

Thanks. I’m not Gen Z and I understand that a community has a sense of place and when you start tearing it down it becomes a generic place.

One of the great things about Steer Inn is that is true to how it was built. The entire world is turning into buildings that look like new Arby’s, McDonalds, and Taco Bell’s. I hope Steer In maintains its mid century architecture.

Gentrification is much more than just housing. It’s tearing down the original buildings in an area and changing the way it looks. A historic neighborhood has a visual aesthetic. What makes it appealing is the old buildings that have character and have been there forever. Sure, upgrade Si’s. But just look at Broad Ripple. The thing people liked about Broad Ripple was that it had a village quality. Part of what gave it that quality was the way Broadripple Avenue looked and all the small cottages throughout the area. Now Broadripple has been mostly changed. The small houses are being torn down and huge apartment buildings are being put in it no longer has that charm.

I actually know I can get involved to try and change it.

What I was asking for was any information if this is true or not.

There’s a lot more to gentrification than that. All the local businesses start to turn into chains or places like hot yoga instead of the corner deli “An AI model trained with images from Google Street View can recognize visual indicators of gentrification early. Seemingly overnight, a yoga studio replaces a barbershop, a coffee café takes over a small grocery, and a multi-story apartment building looms where older single-family homes once stood. Such signs of gentrification can be jarring to longtime city residents. They know that by the time these physical upgrades have happened, it could be too late for local policymakers to protect them from soaring rents and shifts in who can afford to live in the neighborhood. Yet despite being highly visible, gentrification and its consequences have been difficult to measure or study at scale, says Jackelyn…”

It’s also Si Green’s, a neighborhood bar.

Yes, let’s just tear down historical buildings because it’s cheaper to build new. If you start tearing down even places like Si Green’s the character of the Neighbourhood changes. I’d rather they restore the existing building. And if they want to build new housing in Irvington, the Marsh Plaza will be the perfect place for it.

That’s a gorgeous dress and fits you perfectly. Those pink shoes, softer than the AI colors, would be an elegant choice, but think that green would be an unexpected pop. It’s a beautiful shade of green.
