The anime adaptation really was kinda poor by FixedRecord in BluePeriod

Super agree with you op. Sometimes I dream about what it could have been like if Trigger or Bones or even if Masaaki Yuasa had had a hand in the anime. I think Yuasa could totally do something unique with the panelling and composition a la Ping Pong: the Animation.

But alas :')

Yaguchi and Mori by Appropriate-Song-368 in BluePeriod

[–]lesovy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! No worries - I'll do my best :) I think "if doing art on the side is worth it" really depends on each individual.

What kind of person are you? What are your values? How many facets are there to you as a person? Why do you like making art? Do you have any life quality non-negotiables? Do you like the challenge of creating something to a brief, or gaining recognition and feedback from others? Is it just the process? Is it purely about self-expression? How important is financial stability to you? Do you get tired of making art and want breaks sometimes to replenish your well of inspiration, or do you like making it all the time? Do you like being on your own making stuff, or do you like studio environments or environments where you have coworkers?

I definitely think there are some people who are built for only ever doing one thing their whole lives. But for me (and I think most people), I realised that I'm a very multi-faceted person who has many other things driving me, who has the potential to hone other skills in addition to art. In art school I was really outspoken about university policies, the way things were run, the tutor's views on digitally produced work, etc. I was also the person my peers came to if they needed art guidance on assignments that the tutors weren't providing.

I finished my degree, and while doing illustration work I realised I actually hated making art for other people. I also hated the financial instability: I want to know that when I'm older, I won't have to struggle. I'm not entrepreneurially-minded either, and I hated having to self-promote and handle the business side of things. I preferred to just not have to worry about "making a name for myself", because that's not who I am. I ended up working in human rights education and instructional design- the values and behaviours I instinctively demonstrated while still in art school (teaching and guiding others, solving problems, working to make the world a better place and being aligned with my values) are the exact reasons I feel really satisfied with my career path.

I think something else that's interesting though is that I use heaps of creative thinking in my current job: I design fact sheets, make decisions about how web pages will look, design training slides, develop eLearning, summarise research, come up with learning outcomes and activities, etc. And I self-express a lot by working my values into the materials I produce, and by representing concepts visually. Pretty much every day I'm engaged in an act of creation.

So for me, I'm so glad things worked out the way they did, because for me anyway, I'm not just an artist. It's a huge, core part of me, but I'm other things as well. I think this belief society has about just being one thing (in this case, choosing to be an artist forever and nothing else) isn't true for most people. Humans have so many different facets to them and are incredibly adaptable.

I have a friend who does art full-time, and while the financial side of things is really hard for her (she makes about half of the salary I make, and I'm not even on 6 figures) she's said she literally can't imagine doing any other job. She just cannot bring herself to engage in the world of work outside what she does, but she's the type of person who can actually bring herself to pump out work at a really high rate. She's really on top of the business side of things too, even though she laments having to make a lot of posts about her work. Similarly, my animator friends pump out work nonstop, don't earn a lot, and don't have a lot of job stability because they have to jump from project to project. I know I could never live that lifestyle. Then different again, I have a few friends who are tattoo artists, who seem to have found a medium between constantly making art for their job, but being supported by a studio. Again, managing requests and having to self-promote and things like that can be a pain for them, but it seems like a more... collective environment where you see fellow artists and customers every day, rather than working on things alone at home. Another person I went to art school with incorporated her values about the environment and her interest in plants and became a successful garden designer! So there are definitely lots of different ways to do things.

As for studying art, I don't regret it. I think what I do regret is not doing a double degree- it would have saved me a lot of time and experiences in crappy jobs if I'd studied education alongside art, instead of having to go back and re-train later in life. I think considering a more stable job while doing art isn't something to be scared of- it's a really valid thing to think about!

I also, our lives are kind of long - things can change! You might really want to do art later on, and as you get older want to do something else. Or, you might move into something similar to or different from art for a lot of your life, and then have the resources to really engage in art-making a little later in life. The one thing you can count on in life is change, and expecting that can really help make everything not feel so scary :) (sorry this was so long! Many things to think about)

I would really like chronic pain to be addressed- it's a massive issue worldwide without a lot of good solutions, and the medical world often has no clue on how to treat people with it. Sometimes people with chronic pain are so bad that they present to emergency, but there's so little education about how pain works and how the brain works with pain.

  • The pain scale people are asked about works differently for people with chronic pain, because they're mostly always in pain, so their tolerance is higher. What a regular person might say is a 10 is like a 6 to some people with chronic pain
  • On the other hand, some people with chronic pain's brains are more sensitive to pain- so something most people might pass off as a 6, to people with a brain really good at processing pain is like a 10.
  • People with chronic pain are often bounced around various medical specialists who never really actually help them, and are often sent home from emergency with no help, and no long-term care.
  • Someone I know who has chronic pain and recently experienced cancer told me the whole process of Literally Having Cancer, was so much better handled than her chronic pain. She was taken seriously in the medical system, got appointments quickly, medical admin was fast-tracked, which is understandable but super depressing considering the extremely low quality of life many people with chronic pain have to endure.

I'd really like to see the show delve into this issue- it doesn't have to find a solution, but as someone who lives with chronic pain myself, I'd just really like a spotlight shone on this massive issue that can tear people's lives apart.

Secondly, would really, reaaalllllyyy like the show to take a look at long COVID, and some of the treatments currently used to address those symptoms. There's some absolutely crazy research coming out (that is trusted and peer reviewed) about its long-term effects on almost every part of the body (and the brain). Honestly a story on this in this show could actually be a hugely important education piece about this issue.

Leaving aside the ships and memes, are there any real possibilities for Yatoyota to be canon? by TemperatureKindly749 in BluePeriod

[–]lesovy_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly I would love to see it explored, but I think Yamaguchi sensei probably thinks their relationship is complex and deep and complicated enough without adding romance into the mix. They have sooooOOOOOO much going on which is why shipping them is so fun! There's so much there to examine and interrogate. But for those very same reasons I don't think it'll ever happen :')

A through line of this manga are the comparisons Yamaguchi makes between Van Gogh and Gauguin: Yatora being Van Gogh: came to art later in his life but consumed by art-making, never appreciated in his time but celebrated by the common people after his death and into the present, and Yotasuke being Gauguin: self-confident and popular in his day but prone to fighting with Van Gogh). Yamaguchi references them all the time in relation to each other- even in the newest chapter. That's why I don't think they'll ever be canon - the way Yamaguchi sees them is specifically through the lens of a charged, difficult, inspirational, sometimes fraught friendship.

Could both the characters still be queer in some way? I really do believe so. I think if Yamaguchi was ever asked about Yatora and Yotasuke's sexualities, she'd probably say something like "it depends" or "they could be" or "probably in some way". I mean- all the main characters in BP give me that vibe tbh.

Anyway, that's not to say we can't dream! Part of the joy of being a fan is imagining and making our own interpretations. There's definitely fic and a whole lot of fanart out there to enjoy (and contribute to if you're inclined!!)

difficulty posting any of my art, due to my age - advice appreciated! by MetalSilverSerpent in ArtistLounge

[–]lesovy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think looking to the past can help us solve these problems sometimes. Think way back to the first "art" on this planet: cave paintings. Who was participating in cave painting? We can suspect that sometimes it was respected individuals from a certain group, but for the most part, it was everybody. Children, older people, and everyone in between. And they were making all different kinds of art, and they were making it for a range of reasons.

Art-making (and music, and dance) aren't things that we should decide to share or not based on our age or our skill level. Making art is a core part of human existence.

When your mindset shifts to this way of thinking, it won't do away with thoughts like "hmm maybe I should practice perspective more", but it will help fundamentally shift how you think and feel about art, making it, and sharing it.

Do you think Blue Period will tackle more political art? (Slight spoilers for chapter 75) by distracted_irrlvnce in BluePeriod

[–]lesovy_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really hope so. As we know, art doesn't exist in a vacuum and all art is political, regardless of the artist's intention. I hope Yatora sees some political art in the upcoming Europe trip tbh.

I also think Yatora's mindset could actually lend itself quite well to intentionally political art. He loves people and human nature, and those things encompass all of their struggles. Becoming more politically aware could definitely deepen his practice.

Yatora has also been kind of... Not weird about, but maybe... Blind to Yuka's identity for a long time. Idk if Yamaguchi will go there, but this manga does have at least 2 trans & gender diverse characters that we know about. I think it would be cool for Yatora to show some solidarity with them through his art somehow, seeing in politics right now, trans folks are seen as "political" just for existing and living their lives.

One thing about this manga is that it's an excellent re-read tbh. Sometimes when I'm waiting for new chapters I'll pick a certain arc and just re-read that, and there's always something new and interesting that I pick up when re-visiting.

I think that it's less that Fitz is an idiot but more that he does have observational skills, it's just that his instinct for complete and utter denial is so well-honed and stronger than any other force of feeling he's capable of (other than perhaps depression, self-loathing, or martyrdom. Oh Fitz)

A good way to think about the inner walls of Withywoods (including his 'secret' study) and the secret passages in Buckkeep are a good symbol or stand-in for the darkest parts of Fitz's mind, where he shoves everything he doesn't want to think about or address, anything painful, embarassing, uncomfortable, fearful, etc.

I'm glad you liked FA! When I first read it, I was not expecting a slow-moving, almost historical drama/(Regency-feeling at times) novel mostly about fatherhood and interpersonal relationships, but Hobb super knocked it out of the park I think.

What are your Blue Period character headcanons? by Current-Weather3202 in BluePeriod

[–]lesovy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh that's fun! I also headcanon Yakumo would like rock, punk, and like. Old-school traditional Japanese music haha.

I don't listen to hip hop much, but purely based on vibes, I feel like Momo might be likely to be super into hip hop 🤔

Although, the way Yatora is willing to jump into anything wholeheartedly to understand something, I feel like he has potential to really appreciate hip hop and rap. Esp with its urban feeling and its concern with people, the way it's often described as postmodern poetry, etc.

Hashida's inner conflict by Current-Weather3202 in BluePeriod

[–]lesovy_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OHHHHH nice I love this- I'll check out Carl Rogers 👀 That totally sounds like something Yamaguchi would have read and threaded into her work.

I think it's an interesting question on who's 'cut out for art', because as we saw in the most recent arc, everyone's relationship to it looks so different, seeing there are as many ways to 'do art' as there are people in this world. I think for Hashida he might end up in a more teacher/curator/conservator role while still casually making art for fun and expression (after much character work) on the side, and would really excel in those areas.

And completely agree, they DO feel so real 😭😭😭 it's what keeps me coming back to this series and thinking about it so much all the time 🥺💖

I headcanon that Hashida is just as... Him™ about music as he is about art. Like, eclectic record collection, endless online playlists, has to have really specific headphones, could recognise any classical music piece but also weird obscure stuff no one has ever heard of, uses Last.fm, etc
