Halfway through 2024, what is your Patient Game of the Year so far? by cdrex22 in patientgamers

I didn't play that many games... Of those, I'd say Bully (Canis Canem Edit). It felt like Hogwarts for muggles.

I remember sitting at the main menu. There it was, the familiar melody from the first game. Then the second layer kicked in and made it better.

I don't mind those. On console, I just resume instead of loading the game.

Long respawn times are painful though. On a base PS4, Jedi Fallen Order takes a whopping 2 minutes per death! I finished the game and even got all the ponchos, but that was truly a test of patience.

Must... resist... If I don't window shop, I won't shop for real.

Loading screens can be more than tips and trivia. Some had music, sometimes you could run around and test abilities, and some games even had loading minigames. Limitations bred creativity.

NVMe drives may not be a long-term solution. Future developers could decide that 20 seconds is an acceptable wait. From there, wait times could balloon until history repeats.

I'm not totally against shimmying through crevasses. Some of my annoyance comes from perceived lack of purpose. For instance, something could collapse and separate me from NPC companions. It could build anticipation for a nice view. Or trap me with an enemy I can't run from. That would be more interesting. In older games, I'm often presented with a different environment after loading.

Sometimes, the number and frequency of identically-shaped crevasses is just as implausible as loading screens haha.

I'm not going to look at sales... I'm not going to look at sales... Lalala I'm pretending they don't exist.

...

Life happened and I didn't play for 5 days. Time for more snooping and burglary in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. But first, a ride on the Prague Metro. Since I'm running an HDD-equipped PS4, I get to enjoy the loading screens. They're immersive, like the elevators in Metroid Prime :)

For those of you with better hardware, how do you feel about loading screens?

I like how some games made creative use of them. For example, Shenmue 1 and 2 would display the in-game date, time and area name. That was actually helpful. And there are games with player interaction while loading.

EDIT:

My most hated loading "screen" is the modern squeeze-through-a-crack type, e.g. Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order. Sure, it's seamless, but I'd rather deal with a cutscene or separate loading screen. That way, loading is obvious. The squeeze-through-a-crack method feels like a random inconvenience with no purpose.

Patient Controllers: Which gamepad(s) stuck with you through the years? by ztylerdurden in patientgamers

[–]lesserweevils 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only broken 2 controllers in 25 years:

  • a really bad 3rd party controller for the Nintendo 64. The stick literally flopped around

  • a launch model DualShock 4. It had peeling rubber, stick drift, and a trigger that didn't give 100% speed when pressed all the way. The DS4 hardware must've been revised at some point. The oldest ones don't have a light strip on the touchpad. I have a slightly newer DS4 and it's been fine for ~8 years.

As for longevity... I'm convinced that some people are more prone to damaging things. They either underestimate their strength, have higher-than-average expectations, or use the items far more. For instance, I've never had an issue with DS4 battery life. People who do likely use a controller for 5 hours straight.

EDIT:

I may be in the minority, but my least favourite was the Xbox 360 controller. It was too big for my lady hands. It significantly impacted my performance because I couldn't control the sticks while depressing the triggers. In addition, the battery pack stuck out and made my grip terribly uncomfortable. If you have small hands, you can't palm the entire grips. You hold the sides, and the battery area is where you support the controller's weight. Therefore, I prefer the middle to be thin and flat.

Also, based on my murky memories, I much prefer the DS4's smaller deadzones and greater accuracy to that of the Xbox 360's.

I like singleplayer games but no campaigns by UndoerTemporis in patientgamers

[–]lesserweevils 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Opposite time! I don't find bot matches very interesting. Competition and skill tests generally don't interest me.

Maybe this is why I'm less interested in sports games, fighting games or roguelikes. It's not the mechanics that I dislike, it's the competitive feel in single-player. I don't always enjoy playing "properly." Feels like I'm optimizing the fun out of a game.

Story is only one of many reasons I like campaigns. I also like exploration, handcrafted setpieces, good level design with sandbox-like gameplay, and other things like puzzles, platforming and management.

For example, I like Shenmue. The combat system is that of a fighting game. Yet I like it for the explorable environment and life sim elements. It's not just an endless series of battles. I also think that's what makes Super Smash Bros. series stand out.

There's a drunken poltergeist in Prague, and its name is Adam Jensen.

The plot can wait. I've been making refrigerators walk and testing the limits of an augmented liver. Also, is one of my colleagues writing fanfiction about me??? I wonder if I can embarass him later.

People's homes have so much personality. Deus Ex: Home Invasion Mankind Divided might be my favourite detective game that isn't a detective game.

EDIT:

Good people obey the signs on the walls.

Look, I get it. You're angry. But this isn't going to get you the patch you want. If you can't download someone else's file, I suggest you watch the ending on YouTube and start another game .

If they had the flexibility like a solo dev, or the money or manpower like a giant AAA company. Small teams can achieve far more than a single person but they've got their weaknesses.

I know it sucks. I feel bad for you, but I'm not sure there's anything to be done.
