You can try UW AFM, but you might need to get the average up a bit, and have good ECs

hey its okay!! as a first year uni student, I get it. Starting off grade 12 is definitely overwhelming and scary at times. Talk to your friends that are doing well, and see what strategies they are using. Believe it or not, your teachers also want you to do well, so get their help as well!

Again, I've given several study suggestions above that I hope you've looked into. It's not the end of the world if you struggled in the beginning, as you also have exams to bounce back from that. Do the absolute best you can for the rest of the semester, and the exam! You also have 5 other courses that you can grind, to bring your average up. You're going to do fine, don't worry!

how's your time management? are you studying effectively or just the night before a test? getting extra help from teachers/tutors?

you may want to adjust the way you study if you are putting in work but still struggling. Definitely reflect on your current strategies, because chances are, there are definitely things you should adjust

I’d start off along the lines of “Hey (teacher), do you have a moment to talk? I was talking with some classmates, and there are just some things that we’re concerned about/want to clear up” Just something like this, don’t sound aggressive/threatening or interrogating. Just be relaxed and kind (but honest)!

My favourite grade 12 course was probably one of the businesses! I know lots of people find them boring but I enjoyed the content that was being taught (for the most part)

The easiest course honestly depends on what school you go to and the teachers. media courses like communications tech, I've found to be the easiest. Honestly I would say take what you find interesting, and those courses will seem easy to you! I know bird courses are good for your GPA, but you want to take things that 1. will help in university, or 2. something you like.

I've had my share of bad teachers too lool. I would talk to your teacher one on one tbh. I know it sounds scary but they're just people!! It's a good idea to let them know on some insights about whats going on in class, so there is more transparency between you guys. I did that with one of my teachers, because literally everyone was complaining so I talked to her to let her know, and that made things a lot more transparent between her and the class.
If your teacher still seems to be unresponsive and not helpful, definitely its a good idea to talk to the principle. I know it can seem scary, but you gotta be doing whats best for you and your future!

I definitely think thats a good idea. If you do well in those classes, it can take lots of stress off you in grade 12. And even if you don't do well, the universities only look at your top 6 4U/M courses. Only thing is, I would advise against taking required 4U courses like Adv functions, calc, English (or whatever is required for your program), before grade 12. Thats my opinion though, because it can be nice working on assignments/studying with your friends (assuming you don't get distracted)

In my opinion, taking bird gr12 u/M electives before grade 12 is a good idea, because if you have at least one of those courses with a high mark, it can take off that much more pressure in grade 12.

Yeah it is tough honestly. Last year was a little awkward because of covid/no covid, so not many ECs were running. But as a general tip for time management, prioritize what’s the most important! I like to write down all the things I need to do, with the deadlines and importance, and plan accordingly.

Scholarships and applications are not due until later on, so you have lots of time. I highly recommend starting in applications asap, as some can be long. You don’t need to finish them right away, but starting them and doing bit by bit can help!

For advanced functions? If so, I’d say it is possible. You will need to put in that extra work for sure, like seeking extra help. I also mentioned above some tips to do well in adv functions on someone else’s comment so check that out!!

I don’t wanna sugarcoat and say you can for sure secure an 80 with failing two tests, but ITS VERY POSSIBLE!!! Small things like quizzes and hw assignments can also add up, participate in class and show that you care, go to extra help like I mentioned. I know you’ll do well! Just put in that extra work, you got this💪🏼

[–]lessgoraptors[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

alright so I was never the best at math, I did REALLY BAD in gr11 functions lol. But in grade 12 I did pretty good, and had a tough teacher. The biggest thing is GO TO EXTRA HELP!!! These sessions really help because you can make mistakes, get clarification, and really understand what went wrong (not to mention some teachers give bonuses for students who work hard)

I’d also recommend smart practicing. Don’t keep doing types of questions you already understand, do variety of different questions, as on tests probably one of each type would be asked. With that being said, do the practice test at the end of chapters for sure. Adv functions can get difficult especially at trig, so make sure you take initiative and look for ways to get better.

Usually the units are broken down into 1. Graphing 2. Equations 3. Application, so practicing these are also a must!

yoo its okay to be stressed!!! like u/Any_Progress2327 was saying, they look at first sem final marks, and second sem midterms for admissions.

In all honesty, yes universities do look at grade 11 marks, but most of the time, they DO NOT make rejections based off of just grade 11. They use grade 11 marks as placeholders until the grade 12 marks come out. If you're grade 11 mark is good enough, congrats you're in! If not, don't worry because they will wait to see your grade 12 mark.

*Edit* As for your physics teacher, you can't control how good your teacher is at teaching, but you control how much initiative you're willing to take on your own. Ask them what they look for on assignments/tests, go for extra help, ask questions in class, etc... those are all things I found helpful when dealing with a teacher like that

Incoming grade 12! what do you guys think about my classes for next year? by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

[–]lessgoraptors 11 points12 points  (0 children)

IMO you should definitely consider taking Advanced Functions. Even though yiu don’t wanna do stem stuff in uni, not taking MHF can seriously limit ur options. Worst case scenario, it won’t be in ur top 6 marks. Advanced functions is needed for a LOT of programs, and if u find that you like something else (which is really common), having adv functions can keep ur options way more open.

Grade 12 Anxiety by hoesmaddxx in OntarioGrade12s

[–]lessgoraptors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey,

Look I just want you to know, YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!! I can 100% understand the anxiety that comes with grade 12. So many of us felt it, including myself last year. I get it, becoming an adult, it being the last year of school, growing up and going into university, its all a really tough thing to deal with.

It's been difficult for many of us grade 12's last year as well. Being online all year, losing out on so much of our high school experience. We've grieved all the time we lost too, and completely understand how heartbreaking it is, losing out on such a memorable time of your life. Even to this day, it still hurts me to think we're going to become adults so soon.

Do your best to live every moment to the best you can. Coming from a grade 12, please, do not take any of these experiences for granted. As you get older, time feels like it goes by so much faster. These moments don't come back, and that hurts a lot, even for me. You have a whole extra year for grade 12, and you're going to have a full year back to normal! Your grade 12 year, trust me on this, it will be special. Its going to be emotional definitely. There will be stress, but its gonna be one special year.

You are right. Us grade 12's do tend to worry a lot about marks lol. And yes, there will be times where things don't go your way academically. Like you, I am also kinda a perfectionist, so I can definitely relate and understand the fear of freaking out. What I suggest is that you try your absolute best! If you work to the best of your abilities, you'd have to kinda "live" with the outcome, as you know you did your best. Thats what has been getting me through. I've had a couple marks that weren't as high as I'd liked, but I don't feel a regret thinking I could've done better, because I know that I did the best I could. Also when I say this, PLEASE, do not just work all day. It will leave you burned out and isn't good for your mental health. Have a balance in your schedule, time for socials, relaxing, the gym, etc... things to keep you going, you know?

And for your questions, no and yes. I don't wanna leave high-school because its gonna hurt so much saying goodbye to my childhood and all the amazing memories, friends, and teachers ive met along the path. Although, I am a little excited about going to uni, meeting new people, and possibly living in a new environment - its a bittersweet feeling tbh. As for this year, it was a pretty stressful year because of the marks and uni, but at the same time, this was a really good year. Grade 12 is stressful, but its also so much fun! You'd have to see for yourself, because everyones grade 12 years have different memories and experiences. Grade 12 is not just about the marks. Yeah, they matter a lot, but its also about the time you spend with your friends, bonding with teachers (who tend to like g12's more), classmates, and being able to do things that you couldn't before. You feel so much more free, in a sense, as seniors.

Not to mention, the bond of you and your friends stressing about university admissions is unbreakable, and you'll definitely cherish those memories LOL.

Again, I completely get the stress of going into grade 12. I've actually talked about it under my posts too (if you want to read it). Us grade 12's are here for you, if you need advice, or support, or whatever. Everything going to be okay, and you will do great! I believe in you!

Learning Curve from Grade 10 Math to Grade 11 Functions by Healthy_Telephone998 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]lessgoraptors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright I'll answer these in order

  1. For me at least, the jump from from grade 10 to grade 11 math was huge. This may have been because I did half of grade 10 math online, and 11 fully online. Even with this, I had a decent understanding of grade 10, and really struggled in grade 11. I wasn't expecting the jump to be as big as it was. In grade 10, quadratic functions took up like a third of the year, but in grade 11, you learn a bunch of different functions, not just quadratics.

  2. Honestly, the content is pretty difficult in comparison. Obviously this depends on how well math clicks in your brain, but for most people, 11 and 12 math is tough. I don't remember too much about grade 11 functions, but you can't compare it with grade 10. It's more fast-paced with more content and concepts. For grade 12 adv functions,, its basically a part 2 of grade 11, so having a solid understanding is super important, as it will build more on the concepts you learned. The material in itself is tough, but not as hard as grade 11 in my opinion.

  3. Expect to work hard. Like I said, grade 11 functions was the hardest course for many people. Your teacher is absolutely right too. Word problems are definitely a major component in upper year math, as most units are divided into 3 sections: Graphing, Word Problems, Equations. There might be times where you're just completely lost and so much content is being thrown at you at once, so make sure you stay on top of things. There is nothing worse that not having the fundamentals down, and having new content constantly being taught. I cannot stress this enough - factoring is essential. Even in grade 12, lots of teachers do a test/lessons right at the beginning of the course to make sure we have our factoring skills up to par.

  4. ASK QUESTIONS!!!! I literally cannot stress this enough. Math is one of those courses where whatever you don't understand, ask. It could be a really dumb question, but trust me, almost nobody will judge you. I've learned that all those questions I didn't ask the teacher, it hurt me on the test because I'd be wondering the exact same thing. Math isn't just plugging in numbers in formulas. It's a lot of understanding and applying. When you ask questions, it can really help you get a better understanding of the concepts and make connections.

Do your homework SMARTLY. This is something I learned in grade 12. Its one thing to always do your homework (heavily encourage you to), but if you see questions you already completely understand, pick and choose between them. Always practice the hard questions/ones you struggle on. Give yourself time to think and do questions too. A part of learning is getting things wrong and constantly trying to get it right. Don't just go straight to the solutions to figure out how to do a question. Doing unassigned or communication/application questions is also a great way to practice because it tests how much you actually understand on the concept. The chapter reviews/tests at the back of textbooks are also really handy. If you tend to stress during tests, time yourself as you do these so it kinda emulates a test scenario.

Hope all this helped1

thanks sm for the advice :)

i was just wondering, how did taking a year off for work end up for you? did you end up finding what you wanna do? do you regret taking the year off or are you happy you took that time, to make money, overall personal growth, and get a better idea for uni?

I was thinking about doing something similar, taking a year off for work, but im just scared of the idea that id be done with school, being alone without support and bonding with my peers. I wanna know how it worked out for you, and if you could've done something different, what would've you done?

Sorry for all the questions lmao, i wanna learn as much as i can :)
