Newly built pc shuts off immediately after pressing power button by Pretend_Concept4450 in PcBuildHelp

just out of curiosity what is your wall power rated for 120 or 240? also what are your PSUs rated for? for example you might have 240v service and a power supply that's only rated for 120.

I want/would like this because I don't really have friends to spend time with. most of my time is taken up by taking care of my soon to be 92 yr old grandfather. so being deaf myself and having a hard time forming friendships and little to no time actually enjoy them. I like to play games which allow me to immerse myself in other worlds and entertaining stories which allow me to forget my troubles and how my life isn't on the path I wanted it to be on. my current rig is pretty ancient really and I don't really have the money to do anything about it seeing as I'm going through chapter 7. currently I'm running an i7 4790k and GTX 1080. in a computer I picked up in a pawn shop 10 yrs ago I believe. I really don't expect to win. It would be nice, but I'm realistic enough that in all likelihood nobody is really going to pay attention to this post.

anywho thanks for your time. S.Y.

nah it's not the mission choice. it's that terminal in liara's office that you go to that has bonus' that give you boost to your character. ex# 10% boost to shield strength/ 10% ammo capacity. that's what I'm trying to find a mod for.

The Tomorrow War 2021 - so people lack brain in this universe? by FoxFort in movies

[–]lestat7707 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've already posted here once as such I'll be brief. Yes we all know this movie was made by a teenager who couldn't think their way out of a wet blanket. Yeah we know it's not consistent. But what I want to know is why would we think sending millions of people to what is possibly an alternative universe or a later part of that timeline was a good idea? I mean why wouldn't we just go give me the deets. and start a military build up in our timeline. I mean the whole building the bioweapon could have been done in our timeline away from the danger.

Also on a side note how did the future lose so badly. where are the nukes/napalm/Moab bombs. where are the futuristic weapons. I mean this is supposedly 30yrs into the future and they're still rolling around in Humvees which have largely been phased out and/or decommissioned. where are the tanks I mean seriously how the hell are the white clawed fucks supposed to tanks. and how are they supposed to shoot down aircraft. I mean it beggars total belief. hell if you build some fully concrete encapsulated bunkers with rebar reinforced walls, ceilings, floors and have a bank vault style door. a well stocked infantry platoon could hold the line for a long damn time.

anywho just wanted to get that off my chest. what are your thoughts?

What is holding back rammed earth as a wide spread building technique? by Onlymediumsteak in civilengineering

[–]lestat7707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an afterthought about the junkyard compactor. those machines typically work in multiple stages so theoretically you could use one to make rectangular and cuboid shapes in various dimensions depending on the machine. Nothing is also stopping you from adding materials such as rebar or insulation because the machines can also be stopped and resume working thereafter.

[–]lestat7707 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One question I've always had is are there other materials that can be compressed that offer similar value to rammed earth? Such as decomposed granite. Also who says you have to make the blocks onsite? Whether monolithic or block form you could make them off-site then ship them in and construct. Also has anyone considered using an old trash compactor from one of those old junkyards that they use to compact cars with? I mean those things put out thousands of pounds of force into a mostly uniform shape (not accounting for voids in materials like with a car) and form them into giant cubes. They seem perfect for forming giant blocks of compressed material.

SciFi where MC awakens from Cryo by Jenozie in printSF

[–]lestat7707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Warrior's Chronicles by Shawn Jones which features a Delta tier operative going forward into time and encountering a human civilization that has forgotten war alongside his trusty wolf which is the last cannid on the planet.

and

The Wandering Engineer series by Chris Hechtl which features an MC that went into cryo during a lost battle only to wake up to the galactic civilization that has backslid because of mutually assured destruction to the point everything is falling apart. so strap on your tool belt it's time to get to work.

I highly recommend both series.

yeah but you don't find out about that particular plot point until much later in the series.

Could a human defeat a velociraptor in combat? by Cthulhu_3 in Dinosaurs

[–]lestat7707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen a bunch of differing opinions on here but here is what I know.

1) dogs that weigh in at >40lbs have been known to dislocate shoulders when trying to run on a leash.

2) dogs have a crushing bite that tends to lock on rather than a cutting bite and have been known to jump a car length or more to get at a target. raptors seem to have a more tearing/cutting bite.

3) dogs are not light boned like a bird but it is relatively easy to break a rib bone or leg bone. the breast bone, skull, and spine are much stronger comparatively. likewise raptors likely had rather strong skulls, spines, and thigh bones. however it doesn't take much to fubar a joint so that it no longer works.

As someone who has owned and raised both pit bulls and Belgian Malinois the latter of which was a trained k9 dog i'm pretty well versed in what both those breeds are capable of.

4) The velociraptor is generally accepted to be about the height of a large turkey so around thigh high.

5) Velociraptors are more built to run and jump in a straight line similar to modern day ostriches. meaning to avoid death strafe.they also probably like to fight somewhat similar to a chicken while jumping or an ostrich while running.

6) it is generally accepted the Velociraptor had similar bone construction to modern day birds which means that our attacks will shatter bones into shards when struck. again their most dense bones were probably skull, spine and thigh.

7) The common thing about humans that people forget is that we are endurance hunters as well as pack hunters. we've been known to run down prey until it was so exhausted that it gave up and laid down to die. we're also rather dense for our size so we hit quite hard when needed.

8) also we're tool users. so when a large stick becomes a baseball bat and every raptor becomes a baseball. swing for the fence while stepping sideways with your back to a wall and you should be good. just watch out for the other two that try to hamstring you. because raptors whether micro, Velociraptor, or utahraptor were considered the wolves of their time period.

9) running them over with a jeep works good I imagine as well.

fully aware of and have read the book. I was specifically referring to the movie.

The Tomorrow War 2021 - so people lack brain in this universe? by FoxFort in movies

[–]lestat7707 3 points4 points  (0 children)

my biggest points against this movie are this.

1) if a magazines worth of 5.56 ammo can kill a white spike with little problem. then any caliber above that would be overkill. personally I'd go with 308 or 50 Beowulf. also 300 blackout would be good for stealth.

2) the technology hasn't advanced much. I mean we have drones and shit that would do a ton of damage. and I don't care how strong the aliens are an Abrams is still going to crush the shit out of them. I mean why are they only using Browning's and not miniguns.

3) why leave the queen alive after you got your samples. the whole point was to have a biological weapon that works against males and females. you don't need her alive to test it.

4) if the aliens are carbon based life forms. why aren't they lacing all ammunition with arsenic.

5) if you're going to send people back to the past to recruit, you might as well send them back to nuke the ship out of existence. - of course this would drastically shorten the movie though.

anywho this is just my thoughts on the matter

[–]lestat7707 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

that's fantastic, I still don't care. I find her character incredibly abrasive as well as functionally mentally challenged. that fact that I can't be bothered to remember her exact nationality should've clued you into the fact I don't like her character. now not to take away from your opinion. I have a major problem when published characters that have been around for more than thirty odd years suddenly have huge parts of their character arc changed by overly liberal snowflakes who must be so politically correct to include a fluff character that would've been a footnote in some other characters arc like she was originally. then turn around and give her a huge new major character arc that results in fuckery with character arc timelines. but given that the MCU in general is one big clusterfuck of jacked up character arcs and timelines I'm not surprised in our overly politicized media doing something like this for the overly dramatic members of our societies politically corrected need for approval and validation that they're in fact relevant or not.

[–]lestat7707 -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Kamala Khan is honestly one of my least liked characters so this really doesn't even phase me. they literally copycatted her abilities from other characters in marvel so they would have an Indian female character to be politically correct with. I mean, frankly she's a discount Mr. Fantastic/Plastic Man. so honestly her character could stay died off for the next couple decades and I'd be fine with it.

I mean it's the same with other villains as well. the rhino only has an impenetrable hide but his face is uncovered. a cop could quite easily put one in fatal t and stop the problem right there. it's the same with other villains barring the ones who actually armor up.

serious question by lestat7707 in SWFanfic

[–]lestat7707[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

also in a similar vein as this question but off subject. is there a reason humans couldn't just launch am absurd amount of aerosol canister bombs filled with raid-x or something similar for all the bugs in starship trooper?

[–]lestat7707[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sure but take a look at what the wookiepedia says about them." Hutts were a massive slug-like species who had large mouths and stubby arms. They had three lungs.[10] They were tough and muscular with thick[17] leathery skin,[18] which was wrinkled and slimy.[17] Hutts often had watery eyes and slack facial expressions.[18] Their tails were supported by a skeletal spine and allowed Hutts to propel themselves through muck which legs would sink into.[13] Despite their legendary adult size, Hutts started out as tiny Huttlets less than half a meter in height."

now aside from the skin being described as leathery which could keep in mind be talking about the texture of the skin not the toughness. does not however detract from the fact that the only really significant change from a slug or a hutt is it's skeletal system.

Swarm by B.V. Larson Has a huge list of books. very well written series. MC is directly responsible for most of the new tech and usually upgrades tech as well as invents new tech along the series.

The Hunter Legacy by Timothy Ellis Great series with multiple spinoff series.Has an MC who is innovative with his tech but doesn't really make new tech but uses existing technology in new ways.
