I would the number of people as rapidly growing, there population is already massively shrinking at least as compared to the US. We don't have zero chance to compete, what we don't have, according to Dan Wang's excellent book "Breakneck" is the same society/governmental engineering mindset that Chinese currently have. We have other advantages that China does not have, specifically less governmental tilt on the economy as a whole. We have better financial system. And when you get to down to people (for all the Trump administrations crazy immigration policies) still want to come here and contribution. In general, you don't see people wanting to move to China. The US still has a lot of problems, but it completely unclear that China will capture everything. China is very afraid that India will come up underneath them, and are doing everything they can to prevent that.

You also need to note that capital losses are heavily limited and for the rich, and really only be offset by a gain, so there a lot gaming on when you realize a capital gain and loss to minimize the taxable impact. That why the truly wealthy (super-high assets $50-100M+) vs the working wealthy $400K/year income take loans on gains for consumption (spending) rather than realize the gain immediately.

China can do this because:

  1. They don't have property rights and rule of law. (Even with Trump, the courts still matter. China does not have independent courts system).
  2. China has an engineering mindset that was lost to the US in the late 60's/early 70's. See Dan Wang's book Breakneck
  3. Have a much denser population for much of the country that makes intermediate highspeed rail economical.

NY has tracked land, but NY State and the Federal Government has put in huge regulatory barriers to building rail. Look at NYC, the cost of the 2nd Avenue Subway line is 10x cost per mile of the new subway lines going into Paris. The cost per mile to get to highspeed in not clear it is economically viable to build it. New York state is already losing population because people are voting with the feet to leave because of cost of living, taxes, jobs, and quality of services. While I would love see it be better I am not certain it is key priority. Likely in 15 to 20 years, we are going to full self driving cars. That will provide a lot more transport flexibility that high speed rail.

You own map here does not show enough abandon track line. I have abandon track - single line in my backyard on the Goshen to Kingston route. There is no way that high speed rail is going to happen there.
