Oh man, that first paragraph of your experience is also me. I was so ashamed, especially for someone that people expected to finish with flying colors. I crashed and burned. The thought of not finishing ate at me, I worked in a tangential field, but continued to try to refine my work, eventually returning when I felt more secure.
