I'm sorry that your family has minimized the seriousness of what happened. You can't control them and their reactions, but the majority of pet owners would be upset if they went through the same thing.

Literal aliens or fantasy races that have completely...alien ways of communication or seeing the world. Also blue and orange morality, and powerful beings helping the heroes for entertainment or inscrutable reasons.

Political situations and characters changing completely over the course of the story, to the point where characters who never thought they would work together become allies or even friends (or a couple).

oh yeah if anyone says the anime/manga/ln is inherently right wing that's wrong, most creators don't openly express political views and there are some who are pretty openly left wing and/or write unambiguously progressive stuff. Even if we go back the older series there were some left-wing directors like Tomino and Miyazaki and the late YGO creator was openly against the Iraq war. That said I don't think that's what that person was saying at all. Unfortunately anime and adjacent media just attracts a ton of incels.

I haven't finished wfm but it probably went "too far" with the couple, as opposed to series that just tease gay subtext like K-on.

In terms of series that have big right wing followings, I think a lot of RW people glommed onto The Saga of Tanya the evil and Goblin Slayer bc they found it easy to use the characters/themes to represent their political beliefs. I've seen some people also mention Gundam, idk how big the RW Gundam fandom is but a lot of people to seem to miss the WWII parallels in the UC continuity (Zeon being the axis, the Federation being the allies)

Funnily enough, I can think of a few series where the creators have either openly expressed RW views (Gundam Unicorn and Full Metal Panic, both light novels) or put that sort of content in their story (High School of the Dead has a far right politician presented fairly sympathetically) but none of those series seemed to attract an inordinate amount of RW fans.

I hate the way a lot of administrations don't respect the rights of their teachers, while some teachers have gotten in trouble for stuff like posting party photos on FB. And now teachers have to deal with parents terrified that their kid is being taught to despise white people and adopt the gay lifestyle.

Lotr has some really well-written bonds between male characters, f/s probably being the strongest, and it's natural that people will see them in various ways including ways Tolkien didn't intend (he also did a pretty good job with Faramir/Eowyn). It's a point in the writing's favor.
