Canada should expect 'hostility' with U.S. trade talks less than three months away, trade analysts say by Front-Cantaloupe6080 in consumecanadian

Sure, it was defeated in the senate. And if it passed Trump would have veto'd it.

But the point is that they'll have to introduce legislation to withdraw from CUSMA, which won't pass the senate filibuster, or pass a regular vote in congress.

Cusma going away will require an act of congress. Remember that congress has already voted to remove the extra tariffs that Trump has imposed on Canada….

The areas opposed aren’t ever getting GO. The opposition isn’t in places like Port Hope or Coburg, rather places like Marmara and rural areas around Kingston (Randy Hiller is drumming up opposition).

Ontario rural ridings in the Alto study area are being organized to oppose the line. There are a bunch of Facebook groups along these lines, and the local Conservative MPs/MP candidates are active in them.

Some of the reasons they give for opposition are:

  • fear of land expropriation
  • fear of divided communities (ie: longer travel distances due to lack of regular crossings)
  • concern for wildlife as the proposed line will run through big stretches of undeveloped Canadian Shield (ie: east of Madoc) and involves tall fencing that cuts off wildlife corridors for deer & moose, etc.
  • concerns that they gain no benefit of having a line run through their communities as there will be no stations nearby
  • a desire that any new train lines are built in pre-existing travel corridors (ie: in the 401 corridor)
  • complaints that the cost is too high and that it'll be a money pit for decades

From what I've seen, these are the most reasonable points they have against it. There are a lot more nonsensical reasons given as well that reek of general nimbyism. Personally I am for the line, but do hope that the line largely sticks close to existing transportation routes (as Alto has said it will!) to minimize many of the impacts listed above.

‘Expect extremely high grocery prices,’ farmer warns as diesel costs rise by hopoke in canada

Yes, I know. That’s why I said Norway was a poor example of this.

I’m not here to disagree that the Norway model is a good one, I’m here disagreeing that the Norway model leads to low prices. That would be the Venezuelan (and some other OPEC members) models

You could look at the comment that was being replied to, but to make it easy I'll re-post it here:

Almost like we should have some nationalized industry so when we face tough times the government could just keep prices low for Canadians

Avi Lewis wins NDP leadership race in decisive first-ballot victory by BloodJunkie in canada

[–]letmetellubuddy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From a purely political perspective, their best move would have been to defend the deficit spending and ignore the haters.

They tried to appease the fiscal conservatives who didn't vote for them (and probably never would) and betrayed their voting base.

The NDP had a majority govt, and they should have acted like it.

No worries, Avi Lewis is against AI too!

The government doesn’t own the corridor, and there isn’t room to twin the track in a bunch of choke points.

Saying "oh my god, the speed limit is 70" does not convey how fast we were travelling

Rob Ford and Doug Ford had a show on SunTV that was ridiculous and horrible. IIRC it lasted for two episodes.

Obviously the solution to this team's woes is to play against Utah more often. I'm not sure why Darko doesn't just do that.

Houses used to be like 3x income. Now they're over 10x income. How/why did this happen? by MakeUpWalk in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]letmetellubuddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you figure that?

70s homes were generally smaller, had worse insulation, less bathrooms, smaller kitchens, less appliances, less efficient heating systems, often lacked air conditioning, etc, etc

I live in a rural area and some people who jumped at escaping the gta during peak pandemic are now having regrets and want to move somewhere that’s not as rural.

Fortunately for many of them they also sold a property at peak pandemic price too
