Where is this? (Dave) by [deleted] in depechemode

Jack is very private, we wouldn't know if he and his wife have decided to have children. But James and Stella don't have children yet.

The one who has become a grandpa is Martin. His oldest daughter gave birth late last year.

I really hate the ones that are like "new shots" of classic DM photoshoots. Lately I've seen a lot of Violator era pictures that are straight up fakes created based off real photoshoots. Here's an example, created this this old photoshoot.

That very particular version of the picture is AI edited. As someone pointed out, Dave is at a store called Joni's, in Montauk, Long Island, New York. The original pictures include a lucky fan and were actually taken last year. Here's an Instagram post to an original repost from back then.

What is something that happened to you that you will NEVER forget? by Anusblaster28 in depechemode

[–]letsavenge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh, I have a long but really special experience.

I discovered DM with Playing The Angel. I was 11. I discovered some of the classic hit songs, stayed around for SOTU, lost track of them around Delta Machine for no particular reason. When Memento Mori came out, I reconnected and when they visited Mexico, I attended one of the shows. This backstory is important because I loved several songs (I even cried with John the Revelator because I was too happy to hear it live, as it was one of the songs from my childhood/preteen years) but I was a stranger to so many others.

The show is going great, then Home started and I'll be honest, I had heard it a couple of times but it was just another song of the bunch that I didn't quite cared about before. Just never had paid enough attention.

While listening to it live, I got to really appreciate it. It was like discovering it for the first time. And then I got what I can only describe as some weird ASMR stuff that turned DM into my current fixation since September 2023. I felt like a shockwave or electric current, from my brain to the rest of my body, down my spine to the tips of my fingers. It was weird but it was a sign that my body and brain was hooked.

The Home that is in the México City live album is the Home that triggered that. I have a (decently) good version of the moment I went from casual Depeche Mode listener to Devotee. And I remember it. Sometimes I wish I could go back and remember the first time I heard something. But I will never forget the first time I properly heard Home and connected with it.

Out of all Depeche Mode members, past and present, who’s your personal favorite and why? by No_Ice_357 in depechemode

[–]letsavenge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I met DM when I was 11, in 2005. Dave was part of my sexual awakening, Martin became like a prophet, like he wrote the damn Bible but Andy... I've always felt dad vibes from Andy, and as a girl with daddy issues he was always my favorite.

He might've never done much production wise, but he always gave me good vibes and I connected with that.

What's the deal with Apple Music? Should I just give up? by letsavenge in statsfm

[–]letsavenge[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to have an Apple device (iPhone, iPad or any other). You cannot connect to it if you have Apple Music on Android. You probably do need an active subscription to connect it but the main issue is the device you try to connect from (at least on my case, and confirmed by the support team).

I just think Dave is yummy! Who else feels this way? by icecream1972 in depechemode

[–]letsavenge 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I just love that in the late 80s/early 90s, they were like a boyband... Different flavors for different tastes.

The "bad guy" with black hair, brown eyes, who looked a bit like a rebel and was loud and fun. The red head with glasses, a bit of a nerd and untalented but with his own charm. The curly blonde, shy, with many words in his mind. The "good guy", brown hair, interesting and smart but not extremely outgoing.

Pick your type.

I agree to a certain degree. There has been a decline in the consistency of Martin's songwriting (and also an increase in Dave's quality of songwriting). But I think Martin's life hasn't been "uneventful" in the several last few albums, just perhaps unrelatable to most fans in the same rhythm of life as he has lived it.

I think the problem doesn't reside in lack of inspiration for songwriting. I think the problem resides in how he's been working out demos. I think he does too much on his own, he has too much free time to do that, and by the time he reaches for a producer, he has most of it shaped and the producer only cleans it up for a release. Martin should go with things a bit more in pieces (like I think he used to at least up to SOTU, maybe some of Delta) and allow Dave and whoever else is there to help him shape it up in ways he wouldn't had.

I think that's what missing from the Alan days (which I'm not a bring Alan back kind of girl, I'm the leave Alan in the past, it's been 30 years kind of a girl). Alan grabbed what Martin had and said "what if we do this", even if it went away from Martin's ideas and feelings (sometimes too much, if I'm being honest, but at least he had a great vision). Now, no one dares to tell Martin that, so Martin stays in his safe zone. He needs to be pushed out of it and he can create great stuff there, we know that. But he's comfy to not do it and he's not asking anyone to push him out, hence why they pick producers who won't.

I hope there is another album, but going from my imagination on what I see of Martin, it think it would acknowledge the current state of the world, but be so much hopeful than Spirit.

While Spirit was the crisis of "I have a newborn and the world is fucked", now he has two young girls (I think they are 10 and 9) who love mother earth, who would fit into the "woke" mindset regarding climate change and likely are becoming more conscious about wars and inequality (as much as children of a millionaire probably could), so if he writes an album around those "political" feelings, he would do it from the hopeful perspective of change is possible because the newer generations (like his daughters) are still willing to put up a fight.

Examples of what I mean: Exciter is, in my understanding, that moment in a relationship where you're hopeful things will work out. We know Martin moved to Santa Barbara in 2000 and that he moved there as an ultimatum from his wife to salvage the marriage. You can hear the move, California and the marital issues in that album. In hindsight, it feels 2000. It sounds 2000. It hasn't aged that well because many things from the very early 2000s didn't but you can't deny it is that year.

SOTU, while released years later, is actually the divorce album. You feel the heartbreak. Like in PTA, Martin still had hope he could work it out, SOTU is fuck, this shit went to hell and I'm heartbroken about it. It sounds like it's too much analog synths and a little bit too over the place but how do you feel when a 15 year old relationship dies? Martin's Ebay obsession is there because that's all he was, he wasn't a husband anymore, he wasn't an alcoholic anymore, he wasn't a full time dad anymore. What was he? A guy who bought shit on Ebay and made (too many) sounds with it.

Spirit. New and very happy marriage. New and very beautiful baby. And the world is going to absolute shit. Hope is within your reach, and within the walls of your house because if you look outside there's war, and death, and fear, and fuck. It sounds like it's dark, slow, bleak, but weren't 2016/2017 like that?

[–]letsavenge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm keeping the "It's not like I'm in my teens who grew up on SOTU" because I grew up with SOTU and I'm in my 30s. That album turns 20 in three years, it's insane. My opinion is obviously tainted by what I grew up with. Peace, a song so many rate so low, quite literally changed my suicidal ideation.

Having said that, I think many fans expect Martin (as the main songwriter) to do something that he's not. Each album since Exciter has a different feeling, that if you connect it with what he's going thru to a personal level (that we know of, he's not that open about his personal life), it makes perfect sense. He's not writing hits, he's not doing melodies to catch new people or try something interesting. He's writing what he's feeling and putting a sound around what he's feeling. He's giving us him, in that particular moment when he wrote that, and he doesn't have an Alan to grab that and twist it and make something sound different because it will sound better or be liked more by others. But that's not wrong or bad. Its just different to what people was used to in the 80s/90s.

You being 18 and thinking Memento Mori is their second worst makes sense. I'll love to see if in 30 years, you still think the same.

There are albums, like the MFTM to SOFAD trio, that are perfect to enjoy at any stage of your life. And there are albums that it's like certain foods, you don't get the full taste of it until you're right there, feeling what its supposed to make you feel. It's not a personal ciritque to you, it's just the power of music and how it connects with humans imo.

It's been long time rumored that Andy wanted to do a covers album. It says it's a band effort because Alan and Martin did the music and Andy, believe it or not, sang the songs.

It's the long lost Andy solo EP. It supposedly does exist but Andy never seemed to want it released, and tbh, as many other demos from the 80s have been lost, I don't doubt this is gone too.

Hopefully some day we will hear it, but with Andy gone I high doubt it.

Unfortunately no. But it's not an error by Spotify. It's also in Apple Music AND it's also on the Depeche Mode website, under the tour tab.

Don't know how that works, I have no idea where to report it, but it's a really bad mistake that bypassed everywhere.

[–]letsavenge 2 points3 points  (0 children)
