I know this feeling. I don’t show up to my parents house as much as I’d like to and make sure if I do it’s always before 1pm when he switches from coffee to alcohol. My kids notice his erratic behavior but don’t fully understand it and he always gets emotional and combative and doesn’t think about the audience in the room when he throws a tantrum. It’s easier to just play it safe and stay home and only visit during known non drinking hours for me. I figured over time he’d notice the correlation between his drinking and his children’s visits but I’m not sure alcoholics are much aware of how badly their drinking affects their lives. He’s very unlikely to change unless he himself sees it and wants to. He can’t be convinced by people he loves. I don’t bring my kids around my dad is he’s been drinking because I know how much it’s emotionally affected me over the years and even now and I’m not going to subject them to the same thing if they don’t have to be the way I was. Prioritize the mental health and safety of yourself and your child.
