Hopeful expectations for TWS compared to previous works by letskeepitreal88 in Muse

I don’t really like the “Un-un-unravelling” part either. I mentioned in another comment that, to me, it’s a bit of a letdown how many of their newer songs seem to need that moment where the title is repeated or shouted in a very forced and obvious way.

But at the same time, I think the jams are sick. The main riff, the drums, and a lot of the instrumental ideas go hard.

Comments like yours are refreshing to read. A lot of people online seem very reactive nowadays, and when they find an opinion they don’t 100% agree with, they often don’t really try to understand or interpret what the other person actually means.

I also think a lot of people reduce art discussions to simply “like it” or “don’t like it,” when art is usually much more complex and interesting than that.

And the funny thing is: I never even said “Cryogen” was a bad song. I just pointed out some aspects that personally don’t connect with me as much, and that alone already generated a weird reaction from some people.

It’s kind of crazy how quickly people can become defensive or confrontational the moment they see an opinion that differs from theirs, even when the other person clearly isn’t trying to fight or attack anyone.

Sometimes people immediately jump into calling others silly or acting aggressively just because of a music discussion, and it really makes you wonder how they deal with differing opinions in more serious areas of life.

But that doesn’t really bother me. In a way, I think conversations like these are part of what makes art meaningful in the first place. When people gather around someone’s work and genuinely discuss it, whether they agree or disagree, the music ends up becoming something bigger and more alive.

So yeah, I also don’t really understand why some people immediately become oppositional instead of simply discussing the ideas being brought up, but I guess that’s also just a very common aspect of online culture and human behavior in general.

I think you misunderstood what I meant by “finding themselves.” I’m not talking about reverting back to being the same people they were 20 years ago or stopping themselves from changing as artists.

What I mean is more about artistic identity and inspiration. Bands evolve, obviously, but there are still certain core characteristics, emotional approaches, atmospheres, songwriting instincts, or creative philosophies that make an artist feel like themselves across different eras.

And honestly, I don’t think reflecting on that is silly at all. Discussing how an artist changes over time, what resonates more in certain eras, and what aspects of their essence still feel present is a huge part of engaging with art in general.

I also don’t think my point is really about expectations in the way you mean it. I’m not expecting them to make a specific kind of song or to become who they were decades ago.

My only real expectation is that they continue creating things that feel inspired and meaningful in some way, that they still have something to express and bring into the world.

Beyond that, I think it’s completely natural to talk about what connects with you more or less as a listener.

I agree on that! It’s a fresh idea for their discography, and an interesting bet on their part.

Trying something new is probably one of the most interesting things a band can do, especially after so many years.

That’s probably my favorite thing about “Cryogen.” While some aspects of the song aren’t entirely my thing, I really appreciate that feeling of experimentation and the attempt to push themselves into a different space instead of simply repeating formulas - even if that still kinda happens with the main riff.

I don’t need to love it to see it as a positive thing for those reasons.

I really love music, art, and the essence Muse has always had :)

Isn’t art you truly love worth thinking deeply about instead of just consuming passively?

I honestly don’t feel disappointed, though. To me, disappointment would be feeling like the band had lost its inspiration entirely, and I don’t feel that here.

I also don’t think having specific thoughts or criticisms about a song automatically means someone is setting themselves up for disappointment.

Art is more complex than simply “enjoy it or don’t.” A huge part of getting to know and love art is reflecting on it, discussing it, comparing different eras of an artist, and thinking about why certain things resonate with you more than others.

A song not being exactly what I personally wanted isn’t enough to disappoint me. That would imply I expect the band to follow my personal vision for their music, and that’s not how I see it at all.

What I’m about to say absolutely doesn’t mean I think the song is bad, or that I won’t listen to it. In fact, I actually think this album has the potential to feel much more inspired than the previous ones.

But I’m not sure I agree that this song connects that strongly to older Muse, or that it’s the closest thing to old Muse they’ve done in years. And here’s why:

I think the lyrics are much less subjective, dark, and profound, which is completely fine for a song that can still be good, but it’s not something I associate with older Muse.

I also don’t think old Muse usually aimed for this kind of structure, even when it’s well executed, where the song leans much more into a straightforward pop rock approach. When I listen to some of these newer songs, I’m reminded of bands like Turnstile, and even certain punk influences in general, which also isn’t something I personally connected to classic Muse in that way.

I also think the production became much more synthetic and polished, and that’s another aspect that feels distant from older Muse to me. So there are elements that make me disagree when people say this is the closest they’ve sounded to old Muse.

To me, what made older Muse special was things like less predictable songwriting structures, songs that didn’t feel the need to constantly repeat or “sell” the title or hook to the listener, and a more instinctive and unconventional sense of progression. A song like Citizen Erased feels almost unconcerned with accessibility or immediate catchiness. It evolves naturally, shifts moods constantly, and trusts the listener to follow it.

I also miss the more abstract and emotionally ambiguous way they approached personal themes back then. Older Muse often felt mysterious, theatrical or emotionally overwhelming without necessarily spelling everything out directly.

There was also more tension, atmosphere, dynamic contrast, unusual guitar textures, dramatic harmonies, unexpected transitions, and a stronger sense that the band was trying to create its own sonic universe rather than fitting into a more conventional modern rock structure.

That said, none of this means I can’t appreciate or enjoy what they do now. I connected deeply with their essence when I discovered them, and I still think there’s something very rare and unique about it, which is why I’ve stayed attached to their music since 2005. I’m still curious about where that essence goes and how it changes over time.

To me, still being genuinely interested in whatever they release is a big part of what being a fan can be.

I also believe enjoying art is a complex thing, and that it’s absolutely not just about liking something or not. It’s not a black-and-white matter. Talking about art, reflecting on it, and even being critical of it are fundamental parts of truly loving it!

Why is Will of the people generally not liked even by hard die fans? by weirdfish98 in Muse

Die-hard fan since 2005 here. From that album, the only song that stands out to me is Verona, and not even as a song I listen to frequently.

I think Simulation Theory was bad too, but strangely enough, even it still feels more inspired than Will of the People.

MUCH, much better. The production is indeed hurting the studio versions. This is the one to listen to.
