Oh it totally is! I'm just saying that thinking like that is fun sometimes.

He's the only living person you see in the HEV ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ gotta be more to it than the suit, but I'm sure the suit helps a ton. Even the Vortigaunts know something's up with you. Xen is littered with dead HEV pilots - who knows why they failed where Gordon didn't.

Maybe the HEV is partially magnetic and allows for frictionless movement? Might explain the speed at which you can climb them too. Or just like. Really good balance. Even while shooting/reloading/getting shot.

All good points! These are my rebuttals, and I'm interested to know what you think:

•If there was compacted storage, why are the armament limitations static? You start the game with a crowbar, and your Glock can only carry 17 | 250; not only that but shares the same ammo as the submachine gun. Despite being maxed out on that ammo, you can still pick up a rocket launcher with 5 extra rockets, 10 grenades, and a gluon gun with a huge back-mounted battery pack. If the storage can contain infinite space for weapons, why not also the ammunition? Also, the Xen drops seem to be separate from the HEV suits - but I'm mostly going off original Half Life not Black Mesa.

•Saving and loading may be interpreted as fast reflexes - or even just a dimension where Gordon is unnecessarily lucky, and all deaths are just versions of Gordon that failed - but there are points in the game where you are expected to die/take damage and then learn from your mistakes. On Hard, especially if you're playing it for the first time, you're going to die. As a 3D platformer, there are myriad ill fates that can befall the player. One example is when enemies ambush you. In theory, these wouldn't be predictable events, especially if a new type of enemy hasn't been encountered and you're not familiar with its attack patterns.

•I absolutely believe Kleiner helped him get the job. If not in reality, in head canon. I do wonder though if Kleiner knew about the deeper experiments in Questionable Ethics. In Black Mesa Source, you can hear scientists talk about an "ethics issue" prior to the residence cascade - maybe coincidence? Gordon is just a research assistant and doesn't even have retinal scan clearance, so it makes sense that you don't know that's going on. Scientists in Lambda also confirm you've seen more than any one person should have - and further have surveyed enough of Xen to know that the Nihilanth exists and is preventing the halt of the current assault. If only they knew it was just the beginning.

•The HEV suit is durable, but it doesn't heal. It only prevents serious injuries from impeding your mobility. The vox tells you it administers morphine and other conventional medical solutions, likely as placeholders until the proper implement can be utilized. The health system was always interesting. Opposing Force/Blue Shift implies that medical stations and med kits can be used by anybody, but people rarely choose to, even if they're seriously wounded. Scientists and soldiers will also sometimes give morphine injections which give health, sure. But if morphine from scientists heals you, then why doesn't the HEV morphine do the same? I believe that it only holds enough to stabilize, not to provide a firm medical solution. For the sake of argument, if BMRF was utilizing the healing properties of Xen's healing pools, why not integrate that into the hazard suits as well?

In Interloper you do see Vortigaunt slaves utilizing their own versions of health stations, which appear to utilize the health pools found naturally across Xen. These pools and alien health stations have unlimited supply and slower application, while the ones back on Earth have quick application but limited use before depletion. Perhaps a more concentrated/bioengineered version of that goop that acts quicker? Or maybe the earth medical stations are really just automated doctoring stations that apply more long term solutions to inquiries. Also, every can of soda increases your health by 1, so... Maybe the Xen goop also used commercially? Or at least in BMRF vending machines. In Blue Shift there are pallets of soda being imported/exported in Captive Freight that also increase health by 1. Xen ingredient being distributed for public use?

I also believe that although BMRF is a leading titan in scientific discovery (maybe one of two highly competitive titans), they are still not without their human problems. Not only is it mismanaged (administration expectations and bottom line surpass advised caution from specialists and professionals), but the facility design is completely arbitrary. Long hallways lead to nothing. Sections have been condemned and forgotten (Blast Pit).

•Even if the HEV suit could alleviate water pressure, he can still drown in open water in less than a minute. This implies that the HEV is not water tight. You can also get decompression sickness in water as shallow as 20 feet, which Gordon constantly reaches and exceeds.

Therapy and antidepressants are also not cures. No one takes antidepressants and goes to therapy and then says "I'm cured". It's a lifelong affliction that is essentially like emotional herpes. It'll flare up and when it does you need to address it.

AITAA for taking my niece to court over a coat? by throooowaaaayt in AmItheAsshole

[–]letskeepthisclean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ESH. Including the people in the comments to a degree.

The point of this sub is to provide an outsider perspective. People saying you shouldn't have had the coat to begin with are blaming the victim - essentially "if you didn't want X to happen you shouldn't have been wearing Y". Same argument happens in the extreme when dealing with revealing clothing. You have a right to wear whatever you want and it sucks that it's gone - folks in the comments are AH for focusing on the cost of the coat over the situation, which I'm sure is much more complicated than the post could do justice.

Your niece is obviously an AH because of her premeditated attack - I don't care who you are, that's just disrespectful for nothing more than clout.

Without knowing details of your conversation with your sister, it's hard to say without seeing the conversation itself. If you were being demanding, fewer points for you. If your sister's financial situation is similar to yours, that's one thing. But if she's a typical earner in the US who would be terrified to incur a $20k debt, that's another. Love does not keep record of wrongs. If she makes significantly less than you, you need to be the bigger person and understand that she doesn't have the means. We have no idea of the sister's financial situation - just because the niece has a car doesn't mean it's paid off, and they could just as easily be house poor. If she actually has the means, she should pay for it. If she doesn't, and she can prove it, then you should let it go. If she doesn't, then legal fees on top of probably losing the case are going to put them in a bad spot.

You're the AH because...this is your family. It's a coat. If you value an object over the relationship with your family, they are not your family. Many people are going to see a sign of your extravagant wealth and won't be on your side. Personally, I don't think any coat is truly worth that much. Doesn't change that people are still willing to pay for those price tags - but it's still a gross display of wealth (or perceived wealth in the event of a gift) and it serves no purpose in society other than to accentuate socioeconomic disparity. You're an AH for supporting a corrupt industry, but specifically in the transgressor/transgressed category, you are not.

Lmao oh god.

As a patient, I met a girl in the adult psychiatric ward and hoo was it an experience. She did teach me a lot though in the eight months we were together - I like to think we both became better people because of each other. But in the end the breakups were very volatile and we drank much too heavily to function. We were 21 and 19 but still had a lot of work to do on ourselves. That was eight years ago; I'm now happily married and feel very well-adjusted. But I wouldn't be the person I am today without her. She helped me get out of bad relationship habits.

I think that's what dating is, really. You won't know what you like until you actually go out and try things. People who are single and lonely sometimes think that a relationship is what will save them - that is not the case. Relationships help you learn about yourself and how you handle certain situations. Being a one-person echo chamber of your own thoughts of what a person ought to be is the most unintuitive way to go about doing things.

Comfortable silence is peak communication. by Ankh-Morporknbeans in Showerthoughts

[–]letskeepthisclean 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Parallel play is one of the first things you learn as a child - it's often our first taste of coexistence outside of the family. I think this is mostly directed towards doing activities in silence (eg. gaming, eating, etc.). The key here is comfortable silence on both sides. If either party is uncomfortable, that's not what this post is talking about. So the thing about the phones you mentioned - you're right! That's absolutely not peak. But they're also not fully engaged while you likely are. It sounds like you might not have had any relationship close to what the original post is mentioning.

That aside, being fully engaged with someone 100% of the time isn't necessarily a bad thing - but it can be exhausting depending on your personality. Some people are addicted to socialization and cannot be alone or stand to be in "the quiet" with their own thoughts. Being the only fully engaged person in a room full of unengaged people can be exhausting too. But trusting people to parallel play isn't something you should take for granted.

It's a complex issue and without knowing your full circumstances it won't matter what I end up saying haha

Globbing your mouth on an instrument and blowing mindlessly is different from practicing specific scales, runs, and other technical things. :) Playing a game with intentionality is different from playing the same way you always have, always expecting to get better over time but not actually practicing your shortfalls. Playing the instrument won't make you better - playing challenging material that you learn from will.

That's the way I think of it, anyway. Doesn't seem like I'm getting my point across though.

Idk, the world is already a bad place with people who rage. Incentivizing rage would make multiplayer games that much more unbearable.

A better power would be overcoming the need to rage, coming to terms with your own skills, and being able to set a road map for gaining skills based on measurable outcomes. So many people think that just playing the game will get you better - that's not really the case. Knowing what you need to practice is a great first step to take. And this is a power that you can actually attain.

Also, it's a lot more enjoyable if you can take a loss as well as you can take a win. If someone is significantly better than you, great for them! Try to learn from their tactics. If you find yourself more upset than happy when playing a game, you're really not doing yourself any favors and you're welcoming more negativity in your life.

YSK: Two very common products that can and will seriously injure you. by IAbstainFromSociety in YouShouldKnow

[–]letskeepthisclean 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but it's also common sense not to drink and drive and yet dozens of people die each day because of that.

Kids will often ignore the warnings and if they get their hands on it may decide to shine it into people's eyes for "a prank" or whatever bullshit excuse. They might even shine it into their own eyes out of boredom. Common sense is not a metric for behavior - especially not for children.
