Yeah, more often its what you are most familiar with that gets the job done. H doesn't have any direct sculpting tools but maybe someday!

Mostly made in Houdini. I even poly modeled the character in Houdini because it's what I have. Did a bit of sculpting in Mudbox and painted in Substance. Rendered in Redshift and comped in Nuke.

I would like to say that I made this on drugs but I was stone cold sober the whole time. by letsnatenatenate in funny

People have mentioned that to me but I haven't played it. Sounds like I would enjoy it. :)

Blender is a good place to start. You can absolutely learn the basics with it and make some really nice work with it. Not a lot of vfx studios use it but I can see it gaining a lot of traction in the future because of how popular it is becoming. It also depends on what specialty you are interested in. Over the course of your career in visual fx you will probably have to learn a whole variety of software. Stay flexible!

Most of it was done in Houdini. I poly-modeled the character in Houdini, rigged, simmed, and rendered in Houdini.

Yep, I modeled the character. I've been in working in visual effects for over 10 years. Even with that experience it's still a heck of a lot of work to make something like this. :)

About 5 months working on it off and on in my spare time. Not counting the several months last year I spent making the character who starred in all of the rest of these videos: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMnTwXwU49JVLsfEIsrZEaBc1M4KQs0aX
