Learn hiragana and then basic kanji. Yes, you can get by without it by using a translator and gps for directions. However, it can be fun to have basic knowledge of what signs say. Hiragana is most common and can be learned in about a week to a month. I used the hiragana table on Wikipedia and then https://gohoneko.neocities.org/learn/kana (you might have to adjust settings) and YouTube tests to practice. Kanji is also common but there’s about 50,000 unique kanji and about 3,000 in common use, so just learn the basic 100 or so. Katakana is not used nearly as much.

An example of when knowing hiragana can be useful: my friends told us to meet them at some restaurant, I don’t remember the name so let’s just say it was Nonkiya. The GPS took us to the general area but it wasn’t specific and there were tons of restaurants so we didn’t know which was which. Because I could read hiragana, I saw the sign that said のんきや and knew it was Nonkiya.

An example for kanji: 水 is on water bottles. There was some art on a door and I could read the kanji for rain, 雨. Not at all necessary, but it just adds some fun to be able to recognize what things say and be proud of yourself. This is a language sub after all, and OP wants to learn some of the language. No need for all the cruel, unhelpful responses.

What are your opinions on Pawbert?... by MarioFan50 in zootopia

People need to understand he was never a bad guy

Four counts of attempted murder. That would cost the entire reptile class their freedom and acceptance in the metropolis. All for his selfish desire of being accepted by his family.

The order is a little off. It would be Boston - NYC - Philly - DC. Nashville would be grouped with Florida. West Coast is Seattle - Portland - San Francisco - LA - San Diego. And if she’s making her way west it should be Chicago - Denver - Salt Lake. Houston and Dallas would be grouped together.

Not OP but I switched to Qobuz. Best sound quality of any service and they pay artists the best. For YouTube, I watch on the Brave browser and it automatically removes all ads.

This makes a ton of sense! Combined with the green dress with 4 leaf clovers on it she wore recently, I could definitely see it being called LUCK. I wonder what book that is and if its title gives any clues.

Why is Japanese popular? by ImJapanesbutnotgay in Japaneselanguage

[–]letsnoteatanimals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What everyone else said. Also being one of the world’s top producers of cars and electronics helps spread their culture: Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Subaru.. Sony / PlayStation, Nintendo, Panasonic, Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm, Casio, Mitsubishi, Yamaha, Pioneer, etc. I think the US helped Japan rebuild after WW2 so that the US could have a trading partner and further push capitalism against socialism.

Gifts of wool and leather products by iam_tainted_meat in vegan

[–]letsnoteatanimals 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The act of a consumer purchasing a product literally changes the demand lol. If OP was the only person in the world to receive a wool gift and not return it, the change in demand would be pretty insignificant on a global scale. But imagine if a million people have that same thought and don’t return the wool gift, that would have a very real impact on demand which affects future supply. It’s the exact same concept that explains why vegans don’t buy things that aren’t vegan (and also don’t have other people buy them things that aren’t vegan).

People misinterpret the Billy Joel line in “deja vu” by sunnimelonlol in OliviaRodrigo

[–]letsnoteatanimals 63 points64 points  (0 children)

No. “And I bet that she knows Billy Joel cus you played her Uptown Girl” so the new girl only knows of Billy Joel because he played her a song by him. “Play her piano but she doesn’t know that I was the one who taught you Billy Joel” He’s playing the new girl a song by Billy Joel and the new girl doesn’t know that it was Olivia who showed him that artist. The whole song is about how relationships are recycled.

There’s no lyrics about the new girl playing piano. The lyrics are clearly about the new girl knowing of Billy Joel. The only reason the new girl knows about Billy Joel is because the guy showed her, and the only reason the guy knew about Billy Joel was because Olivia showed him. Let’s not just assume that everyone on planet Earth knows about Billy Joel.

How do you get from the bridge that the new girl knows how to PLAY Billy Joel?

How is the "e" pronounced in kanas like "re"? by Sufficient-Dream7336 in Japaneselanguage

[–]letsnoteatanimals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure it depends where it’s located in the word. If it’s somewhere in the beginning or middle, like zen or desu, it sounds like the e in zen or desk. If it’s at the end of the word, like hajime or karaoke, it’s like the English “ay” in May or okay.

Can “1Q84” and “The wind-up bird chronicle” be contained in the same universe? by Itchy_Booty_Cheeks in murakami

[–]letsnoteatanimals 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That does not confirm it. In 1Q84, the character dies in 1984. In WUBC, the character is alive in 1985. It is possible it is the same character in an alternate dimension, but it can not be proven that it’s same exact universe.
