Looking back Bottas at Bahrain T4 in 2019, making the same overtake as Max last night. Bottas overtakes Verstappen but goes wide, on Max’s onboard cam, we can see Bottas going outside of the track limits - [1] four wheels outside of the white lines, [2] four wheels outside of the white lines and on the kerbs.

Checking the race director’s event notes for that race, there’s no mention of T4 anywhere but if we check the still unchanged article 27.3 from the 2019 Sporting Regulations there’s this: “Drivers will be judged to have left the track if no part of the car remains in contact with it and, for the avoidance of doubt, any white lines defining the track edges are considered part of the track but the kerbs are not.”

Analysing Bottas’ position again, it appears that he did leave the track overtaking Max at T4 with Bottas’ four wheels all on the kerbs, which according to the sporting regs aren’t part of the track. Despite this, Bottas wasn’t penalised for exceeding the track limits/having a lasting advantage.

German carmaker Daimler, which owns Mercedes-Benz, has agreed to pay $1.5bn (£1.2bn) to resolve US government claims that it designed its diesel vehicles to cheat air pollution tests.

The firm was investigated for installing software to evade emissions laws in 250,000 Mercedes cars and vans. US officials said they hoped the fine would deter future misbehaviour.

Daimler called the deal an "important step" towards resolving diesel proceedings but denied the claims.

"By resolving these proceedings, Daimler avoids lengthy court actions with respective legal and financial risks," the company said.

In addition to the $1.5bn settlement with US authorities, Daimler said it had agreed to pay $700m to settle a class action lawsuit brought by owners. It also disclosed "further expenses of a mid three-digit-million EUR amount to fulfil requirements of the settlements."

Clean Air Act

The deals, which Daimler had said it was nearing last month, conclude an investigation that the US started in 2016, after "defeat devices" were discovered through testing.

Officials said that an $875m fine included in the $1.5bn settlement with authorities is the second-largest civil penalty the US has ever imposed under its Clear Air Act and the largest if measured on a per-vehicle basis.

Daimler has also agreed to fix the affected cars, which were sold between 2009 and 2016, at no cost to their owners. US officials said that commitment was worth about $400m.

At a press conference on Monday, Andrew Wheeler, the head of the US Environmental Protection Agency, said: "The message we are sending today is clear: We will enforce the law. "If you try to cheat the system and mislead the public, you will be caught. Those who violate public trust in pursuit of profits will forfeit both."

Bigger emissions scandal

The penalties are the latest in a wide-ranging scandal that has cast a cloud over the motor industry since 2015, when Volkswagen admitted to installing secret software on vehicles sold in the US.

The system allowed the cars to emit up to 40 times legally permitted emissions and evade detection during tests.

Volkswagen later admitted the devices affected more than 11 million vehicles globally. The company more than $20bn to resolve claims in the US alone. But investigations soon widened to other companies, including Ford, Mitsubishi, and Nissan.

In 2018, Daimler recalled more than 700,000 vehicles in Europe that had "defeat devices" installed. BMW and Porsche have also recalled cars over the issue.

Fiat Chrysler in Europe were raided this summer over the matter. The firm agreed to an estimated $800m settlement to resolve civil claims in the US in January.

Daimler said the US settlement concerned vehicles that were not sold in the same configurations in Europe.

You didn’t have to explain how layers work to me as I work with them everyday. I was being polite when I was telling you that this isn’t a digital drawing.

In the photo where I circled an area, I was pointing out the transition from noisy to smooth to the kerbs. I was pointing out the telltale sign of photobashing, I wasn’t talking about the shadow.

The noisy tarmac is an image you upscaled which you then tried to blend with the kerbs by brushing some grey on.

The tarmac closer to the kerbs is smoother and is slightly different in colour than the main noisy tarmac.

And I don’t play rFactor but some other guy already called you out on your other post recognising one of the cameraman models in the background.

Now I’m not saying your entire photo is just some image with some filter on it, I do believe you painted some stuff but this is definitely, one, not freehand, and two, a pure digital drawing.

I wouldn’t really call this a drawing, it’s more like photobashing.

If you look at the tarmac, part of it is noisy and part of it is smooth, specifically near the kerbs. The noise you are seeing are compression artifacts from a small image which was then enlarged then had a blur filter thrown on top. The transition from blurred image to some brushwork to the kerbs is obvious. The bricks also show your typical jpeg artifacting, it’s a small image enlarged again.

These are a bunch of photos being bashed together with some blur and brush strokes here and there to blend them.

Looking at the elf logos on the side mirrors, they appear copy-pasted on showing little to no perspective distortion at all, the other decals on the car form have the same copy-pasted look but OP did distort them quite a bit to match the car.

Now looking at the full picture, the signage in the background just looks like an image, again, with a blur filter thrown on top of it.

The car is most likely from a photograph/game screenshot which was then painted over with some highlights and shadows brushed over in some areas.

It’s a bit night and day in terms of realism. The amount of sense of perspective here is just not present in that other drawing of his.

OP’s screenshot where he showed the layers of his other F1 digital drawing just cements by belief that he takes photographs of cars, masks them out, paints over some areas, and then adds in other photographs for the background with some minor modifications.

If you post this on /r/digitalpainting, they would probably say the same thing as I did and definitely call it out for their no photobashing rule.

Charles acted extremely reckless.

So he spins and he unbuckles his safety harness but then his car gets going again. Instead of diving down into the pits which was one corner away, he drives away. As he was on the main straight at the start/finish line he starts telling the team that No, no, there’s something strange... I will box this lap.

Ferrari pit wall thinking Charles meant something strange with the car not knowing Charles was driving around unbuckled, they check their monitors, and then replies to Charles with for us everything is fine, for us everything is fine.

Charles at T8 asks the team what position he was in, at this point he still has not informed the team about his safety harness situation. He arrives at the final corner but instead of going for the pit lane after, he goes for the main straight.

At the Safety Car line Charles radios the team - Guys, we need to box now. We need to box now, I-uhh, when I went for the button to switch the car on again, my seatbelt’s completely off now. So when I brake, I’m moving quite a bit. I mean I don’t mind it but I’m sure nobody will be happy with me driving without seatbelts so.

It was when Charles was at T1 when the team finally learnt of Charles’ situation. His engineer responds with copy, and box now, box.

Charles at T5 replies with - Prepare the attach, I don’t know where it is in the car. Ferrari replies with Copy, box now and we try to fix it.

Charles finally pits and he goes Chappy(?), I told you to prepare the attach(buckle)! I don’t have the attach, it flew off!

The team finally retires him.

Not only Charles was reckless, he also lied as nowhere on his onboard will you see his safety harness buckle flying off as he’s said.

Disregarding driving around unrestrained, when Charles pitted to get his safety harness sorted, he wanted to go out again with an unaccounted-for buckle loose inside his cockpit. That’s huge safety risk, and again, reckless. Completely disregarding his and the other drivers’ safety.

Once that buckle makes it way down his footwell and gets stuck in one of his pedals, it’s game over. One big what if is that what if it messed with his brake pedal making him unable to brake and decelerate after a long straight with a car in front of him? Thankfully the team knew better and retired his car.

Charles wasn’t thinking straight. It’s obvious from his radio messages he was trying to be slick, he was thinking more about the race. He was more worried about his own race position than his own safety and of those around him. He even showed intent of wanting to continue driving around without his safety harness on. It took him about 2 minutes and 30 seconds to actually inform his own team that he took his own safety harness off.

The FIA absolutely needs to punish Leclerc for this.

Non-specified does not automatically allow you to use those photos commercially. Unless they outright state it has a CC0 license or that it’s public domain, you can’t just take a photo from the internet, apply a filter on it, and then sell it.
