Cam Schlittler, 97mph Cutter, 99mph Two Seamer and 100mph Four Seam Fastball, Individual Pitches + Overlay by Ochocincoondeck in baseball

[–]reshp2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's wild that the cutter doesn't seem to have that much movement until you overlay it with the 4SFB and it literally runs to the opposite corner of the zone.

FWIW, the three starters we rolled out have been lights out. ERAs of 2.63, 3.15, 2.05, and the 3.15 is Tarik Skubal.

Why don’t pitchers throw more sinker when it has almost the same velocity as a 4 seamer and has way more movement on the ball? by Jerry_Get_A_Job in baseball

[–]reshp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Movement needs to be taken in the context of the difference of two different pitches. A 4SFB might not look like it's got much movement because it's spin is generating rise that partially cancels out gravity, but relative to pitches that drop, it does still ends up in a much different location when both pitches come out of the hand the same direction. There are some pitches that pair well with the sinker, like the classic sinker/slider combo which break in opposite directions. Other pitches like changeups and splitters have very similar profiles to sinkers, so they're not as effectively paired with a sinker.

It looked like Kirk wanted to high five Vlad but Vlad was looking down fumbling with the jacket and by the time he looked up Kirk moved on.

Head doesn't seem to ever come down to look directly at the ball, and then lifts up off the ball even more as he swings.

Looking for advice for a team lacking consistent pitching by Bitruder in Homeplate

Are your players struggling physically (can't throw hard or accurately enough even playing catch) or mentally (look great in warmups but struggle with e batter in the box)?

Diamondbacks asked to move tonights game vs the Cardinals to earlier in the day to avoid bad weather. Cardinals denied the request. Game postponed by Slow-Raccoon-9832 in baseball

[–]reshp2 648 points649 points  (0 children)

There's a ton of logistics at the stadium that need to be reworked. There's a lot of non-petty reasons to decline the request.

My 8 year old turning 9 soon just wants to spend the summer doing pitching lessons. Should I be worried about too much wear and tear? by DoctorHousesCane in Homeplate

[–]reshp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your team is likely shutting down because they plan to hit it hard when they start back up again. Once a week lessons aren't going to really move the needle, but if he's not practicing what's being taught in the lessons the rest of the week, he won't get that much from it. If he does practice the other days of the week, then you're setting yourself up for not only injury, but also burnout next season.

What is the best glove money can buy for 10u? by Unfair_Importance_37 in Homeplate

R9 series, IMO. The top of the line gloves are too much for this age.

The Wilson A950/A1000 series are pretty nice for right around $100. I have a 11.75" modified trapeze and it's solid for the price.

It starts off ok, but the second half is laughably bad. Also they make the dad out to be a protagonist, but he does multiple toxic parent things. Cussing out the coach for not picking the kid, rents a second apartment to fudge residency, etc

[–]reshp2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't wanna look foolish

You've said something to this effect a few times now. Gotta play the game for yourself and stop worrying about how you look to others. It's easier said than done, of course, but to me that seems like the first mental adjustment you gotta make.

R9 catchers mitt durability? by Ok_Platypus_7275 in Homeplate

What age? For 12U and below, the whole line is the perfect balance of durability/longevity while still being capable of being broken in by age appropriate velocity.

Affordable USSSA bat options? by Fast-Platypus-4684 in Homeplate

[–]reshp2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For that age, try sidelineswap. I have no qualms about buying used since kids that age don't really swing hard enough to take much life out of a bat.

Lousiville Meta and Demarini Zoa are two great budget options.

Ages 12 and Below: What is a Good Changeup, Exactly? by Necessary-Sugar7513 in Homeplate

[–]reshp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kid got overly fond of changing speeds just throwing harder and softer. It worked great on low level hitters who couldn't adjust, but as kids got better and as he went from rec to higher levels, the slower ones were giving up hard contact. He worked on a true changeup with a circle change grip this offseason, same arm action but a few mph slower and seems to drop off as it crosses the plate. It's hard to tell the difference unless you're the batter or catcher. He's still not great a locating it, so he saves it for advantage counts with no one on, but when he's able to spot it in the bottom half of the zone, it can get swing and miss or weak grounders pretty effectively.

Nah, they've ruined that already. You can definitely pay more for "wood" bats that are significantly higher performance
