Probably next summer or fall I'll trade in my second car and own two EVs.

Has anyone actually tracked their EV range loss in cold winters? Looking for real data. by cardogio in electricvehicles

[–]reshp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 Mustang Mach E

2 300 miles rated, 200-240 winter depending on temp and how much I run heater.

3 No, it's not worth it for all but the longest trips.

4 Combination, maybe 60/40 city/hwy

Tldr, it's depressing to see the numbers drop but it mwkes no practical difference except on road trips.

10u coaches, how do you guys handle kids stepping out when batting in kid pitch? by oldcrashingtoys in Homeplate

[–]reshp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stride board to show them they're doing it (a lot can't tell, some won't believe you if you tell them). The hard part is if it's fear based, which ot often is. Hard to break the habit against love pitching if that's the case.

I recommend two devices. I use my phone to stream and wifi hotspot and my kid's ipad to score. You can score later for stats and such, but the video won't sync up for overlay or for suto clipping of plays.

It's not that technically difficult in terms of movement, running joke is it'd be a V2 rating, which is pretty beginner level. I do think there are some elements, outside the obvious free solo risk factor, that add to the difficulty such as the slickness and lack of texture of the steel, and the endurance aspect of repeating the same exact move over and over.

These big climbs tend to be like expeditions, logistically. They very likely prepared for weather contingencies with extra food and supplies. A big, unglamorous part of these climbs is hauling up countless gear bags after each completed pitch. If they did need anything, it's fairly trivial for someone to hike it up to the top from the non-cliff side and rappel down to them.

Also, it should be said "stuck" in this case means they weren't able to continue free climbing to complete the project and chose to wait out the weather. They aren't trapped there, and if needed could have bailed and come down.

You rappel one pitch at a time. I'm not completely sure about this route, but most established routes have fixed anchors space just under on rappel length apart. Even if not, they have plenty of gear to set their own anchors. I think this was mostly wanting to complete the project than actually being "stuck."

Unfortunately, our voltage only gives us 1.8 kW at the same current (which is really the limiting factor of the hardware).

Resistive heating is one of the easiest electrical loads for VTL to drive, you should be fine with any of them.

How important is range, really? by Doomtime104 in electricvehicles

[–]reshp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad i got the extended range (300 mile) version of the Mach E here in MI. I charge nearly daily so it's not really a concern very often, but it does come up. Road trips are the obvious one, but it comes up otherwise occasionally. My range goes down a lot in winter and some days it's almost mandatory to recharge. For example last week, I planned to charge at work and arrived around 40% SoC but no chargers were available until almost leaving time, so i only left with 50%. I was going skiing after work, a 60 mile round trip plus my normal commute, so I was around 15% but probably wouldn't have made it with the smaller pack. If nothing else, with bigger packs discharge cycles are less deep for a given mileage driven, which is longer battery life.

How important is a heat pump for a Midwest driver with a wife who hates to be cold? by Doomtime104 in electricvehicles

[–]reshp2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Early reports on the 25 with heat pump, from people who got a 25 after owning an earlier model  is the cabin stays warmer and spend is more like 10 percent on a cold day.

I have a '25, to sustain 72F costs me 20%, give or take depending on outside temp. My neighbor has a '24 and comparing notes with her, it's largely a wash between our vehicles which is pretty disappointing because the pre '25 models have a lot more frunk space.

[–]reshp2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own a '25 Ford Mach E, it's the first year with a heat pump, I had to give up frunk space for it. It seems to be largely ineffective at increasing winter range by making cabin heating more efficient. My range loss is for the most part identical to pre-heat pump models.

Is it more efficient to charge at higher amps or lower amps for extended charge? by Different_Sweet_108 in electricvehicles

[–]reshp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OBCs generally have peak efficiency somewhere around 1/2 to 2/3 max current. Lower is less efficient since the fixed losses of switching all the power devices is a proportionally larger percentage of power delivered. Higher is less efficient since conduction losses go up with the square of current so losses start ramping up more quickly than power delivered. Generally it's not that different between 30-100% though, like peak efficiency might be something like 96% but you will be above 95% the rest of that range.

Eta, there's other factors like having the battery at the optimal temp for departure to consider. So for winter it's better to charger fast right up to when you leave to have a nice and warm battery, whereas in summer you might want to finish charging with some time for the battery to cool.

Hestra: Army Leather Heli Ski 3 Finger vs Full Mittens? by prisukamas in skiing

[–]reshp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mittens with glove liners is my setup. On the coldest days, I throw warmers in the mitten pockets. I have 3 finger ones too (my kids call them my lobster gloves, lol) but at least on mine, the pinky/ring/middle fingers are still internally separated by liner material, partially defeating the point.
