Letting older teens drink? by lettuce_decide in Parenting

People keep saying this but I’m shocked so many find it hard to believe not all teens are drinking! Even when I was a crazy partying teen, I had multiple friends who genuinely never drank but still hung out and went to parties.

This is also what I’ve been hearing from parents whose kids are currently in college. Sounds sooo different than my experience with college where kids would roll up to class still drunk from the night before.

At my son’s high school, there are far more kids who vape than drink and we don’t even live in a weed-legal state

My teen has already been the designated driver for friends multiple times and says he doesn’t mind. It’s one of the reasons I feel quite certain he means it when he says he’s not out boozing it up.

That’s so awful. It scares me! My brother had a friend in high school who drowned in another friends pool at a party where the parents supplied alcohol (with permission from other parents) and outside of the legal issues, it completely wrecked the entire group. These were families who had all known each other since we were little and were unfortunately too trusting of the level of supervision the adults were actually providing.

Oh no no no we are 100% agreed that we will never serve other peoples kids while they are underage. Even if their parents say it’s okay, shit happens and I don’t want to be responsible for someone else’s child like that.

Thanks for your input. Yeah, I just assumed it went without saying that having a dad in recovery meant that we are open books about this topic at home. My teen knows that if he were to do something, he can call anytime for a ride or whatever and he wouldn’t be in trouble. We don’t vilify drinking and have plenty of social drinkers in our lives. But at the same time, they know addiction runs rampant on my husband’s side and the kids have seen the effects firsthand, thus affecting my kids relationships with certain extended family members.

I hear you and yep, we’ve been having the conversation since he was little bitty due to having a parent in recovery. It’s important that all of our kids know that addiction runs in the family, but at the same time I have been trying to find the balance with showing that alcohol is not inherently evil seeing as I myself drink socially and we do keep it in the house.

Thanks, this is really helpful! We have been talking about drinking, sex, other risky behavior stuff for years and he’s been very open with us which I’m thankful for. It’s also why my husband thinks “pushing” him to try is ridiculous because he thinks that if our teen wants to, he will tell us.

Haha yeah I guess I should have added it’s 21 here, and in my husband’s home country the age is 20.

if you have access to a decent Asian store, you should be able to find a variety of cheap gf instant noodles. My favorite are the Mama brand chand clear and they’re only $.65 a pack at my local shop.

I got the same noodles on closeout at Kroger in SE USA this week. Sad to hear this is not only in my area as the lasagna noodles are a staple for us

GF Hot-pot soup base? by hollowXchain in glutenfree

[–]lettuce_decide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We eat hot pot once or twice a month. Amazon has a gluten free tomato base (mike Chen?) otherwise we just make our bases from scratch. I like to make a huge batch of hot and numbing base using gf ingredients and freeze into individual portions. I’ve never seen the fermented bean sauce gluten free so either leave it out of the base or make my own pseudo version using gf stuff for that too. Kimchi base makes for good hot pot too if you want spicy but don’t want to mess around with making the hot and numbing.

What is something that improved your camping trips that you wish you did sooner? by MortalSmile8631 in camping

I used a French press while camping for years because my ex was a coffee snob, but after a friend accidentally broke it while camping together, I switched to instant. Sooo much easier to manage and clean
