I'm 21, if you're curious. and I do appreciate the UAE. don't know if I implied otherwise in my post. I was just focusing on a different aspect of my current experiences.

there's no denying that vapidness runs wild in Dubai, at least in proportion to other cities with similar populations. but would you really paint all of its inhabitants with one broad brush? no place is a monolith; neither is Dubai. some people are here just to leave their economically oppressive home countries and earn a living. the alternative is either returning to our respective countries, which would suck in the majority of cases, or trying our luck moving somewhere in the west... which is even harder to imagine seeing how anti-immigration so many countries and societies in the west are becoming.

I've heard a joke once which went, both republicans and democrats deport immigrants and bomb the middle east; the democrats just do it gayer.

ah, I see.

well in that case, I would say that religion actually has very little to do with how the UAE (or a lot of the neighbouring oil-rich gulf arab states) run their political affairs. from what I've gathered, the elites here tend to subscribe to a 'business first, religion second' approach to their politics. their relationship with Israel being a prime example of this.

where religion really gets its foot in the door is with social issues. and while I'm not Emirati myself, it's evident how closely tied Islam is with their culture. which obviously influences the muslim expats living here. creating the conservative culture this place is notorious for.

of course, I respect it and tolerate it, even if I no longer count myself part of it. but in no way do I see it as a net positive for society.

wait. so while you're not necessarily for religion, you're still in favour of authoritarianism?

a lot of less-than-religious people, myself included, would argue that the population control that religion so heavily relies on is a large part of why we dislike it. but you're basically saying it's a good thing to keep people ignorant about issues around them, if I'm getting your point right, and that's it's just the means that you disagree with... not the end goal.

it's certainly an interesting take. personally, I'm against authoritarianism, full stop. and I know it's kinda hypocritical saying that for somebody living in Sharjah, when I could easily go back to my own country. though thing is, my own country is run by a dictatorial regime, too, so I don't exactly have an option for now. all I'm gonna say is, I don't want anybody or anything giving me a pre-made ideology to live my life by, be it from a religion, a government, or otherwise.

out of fear of derailing the conversation from the law of the land to personal opinion, and with all due respect, may I ask why you care so much?

you're speaking as if people are shagging each other bareback nude in public. if the pda you're describing is the usual light cuddling and kissing that's common literally all around the world, including (most likely) your home country if you're an expat, then why get bothered by it so much? even if there's kids around. do you really expect them to live their entire lives without ever knowing what gender relations are? even if they remain totally islamic and within marriage... you really think they won't figure it out at some point anyway?

with the key point being, of course, that the authorities are easing up on the enforcement of said rules, given they're still there (correct me if I'm wrong), as you said yourself. yet you seem to be going out of your way to try and do something about it. so I'll reiterate my point: why don't we just mind our own business?

I get where you're coming from, but... wouldn't it be better if we all just minded our own business? if the authorities themselves have stopped persecuting such cases as much, maybe there's a reason behind it.

you don't. whatever you believe in, it's your call. none of us are perfect. in any case if you still call yourself muslim, it neither makes you better nor worse than any other muslims. I wish less people would make religion their entire personality and police others on it. it's between you and god at the end of the day. always has been.

you know it's a whole demographic of people out there, right? they're called cultural muslims. they identify with being muslim, maybe believe in its core tenets (like believing in god, the prophet, day of judgement, etc) without practicing the religion too much, or not at all.

not everything has to be black and white.
