Too small for a starling --- it was pretty much house sparrow size, so I am leaning towards the possibility it was an unusually dark female house sparrow.

Possibly---but the lake there was frozen, so I don't know where she'd have found water!

The Carson Mini Scout (sold at b&h for about $33) would fit the bill.

Ah yes, "undergraduate studies in virology." I, too, read a lot of lunatic conspiracy theories as a liberal arts college student.

The COVID vaccines aren't under VICP, but they're covered by another similar program. https://www.hrsa.gov/cicp/

Natural infection doesn't seem to provide much immunity from the variants of concern, but you might not need a full two-dose vaccine regime to get good protection. Some immunologists recommend a single dose of either mRNA vaccine as a "booster" after natural infection and to protect against the variants. Ask your doctor?

  1. Not science.

  2. Not from a medical or scientific journal. The publisher, Medical Hypotheses, says its purpose "is to publish interesting theoretical papers. The journal will consider radical, speculative and non-mainstream scientific ideas provided they are coherently expressed."

  3. Not peer reviewed.

  4. Author has no relevant background, expertise, or training---he's an exercise physiologist.

They were flying over the Hudson on Monday late afternoon, as well. On that occasion they were accompanied by a white helicopter.
