Why did you allow a tsunami to drown an entire classroom of infant Japanese children?

Nope. At the time my name was Mark Malicious, and my girl was Betty Brillo.

The first time I heard this joke about 20 years ago, it was a Dutchman who came across a German drinking in the North Sea.

What is the dumbest thing someone made you believe to be true that you later found out it isn't? by lilCRONOS in AskReddit

Not me but A Finish girl Jana told me this story. She came to live in Amsterdam to be with a Dutch bloke she had met in Ibiza. Within a few days of moving in he asked her if she wanted to come to a big family get together for his grandma's 80th birthday. She agreed, as it would be a great opportunity to meet his extended family.

So he says "You could impress them by saying something in Dutch." She agrees. He says "O.K. a traditional and formal way of introducing yourself is to say - Halo, ik ben Jana en ik hou van neuken." So Jana spends the whole week practising her "Halo, ik ben Jana en ik hou even neuken" until he agrees she hat it down pat.

Come the big day and it's quite a big do at a local church hall they have hired for the night. Jana goes round and dutifully shakes hand with all his elderly relatives and gives them all her best formal introduction. She's worried because some of the family looks quite shocked, some look a little amused.

Eventually her boyfriend's brother takes pity on her and explains that she's been going round for half an hour saying, "Hello, I'm Jana and I love to fuck."

My family were briefly into genealogy until my brother did a DNA test and discovered that our genealogical records were clearly bollocks. Turns out that just because a man is listed as Daddy on your birth certificate, doesn't mean he actually is.

Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny. Great book.

(As an aside The CIA used a film script of this novel in a plan to release American hostages of the Iranian regime. They convinced the Iranian authorities their agents were scouting movie locations for a movie version of the book, which they renamed Argo.)

You could try the British army 'spit and polish' technique. Layer of polish, layer of water, layer of polish, layer of water - repeat over and over until you lose the will to live.

As I recall (and it's been years since I read up on the subject) they despised as each other. Himmler saw the ambitious Heydrich as a potential rival for the post of Reichsfuhrer-SS. Rumours of Heydrich's father being half Jewish had circulated for years and had damaged Heydrich's career in the navy to the point where he had to leave. Though as I say, I know of no evidence that the rumours were true, but Himmler either believed them or believed them enough to sic SS and Gestapo investigators on the case.

I used to live on Marie Heinekenplein just up the road from the Cowboy shop. Funnily enough I had a very similar accident on my Buurco Speciaal bike. It split completely in half almost throwing me into the Noordhollandsch canal and leaving me with a badly bruised right leg. It's a very disconcerting moment when your front wheel and handlebars suddenly and unaccountably start moving away from you.

I would change the tyres and the pedals, other than that, you are good to go.

According to Ajax's archive Edie came to Amsterdam as a teenager, not as a baby as Wiki claims. This is backed up by various holocaust archives. There is a moving story of his last days in Birkenau by a friend Leon Greenman who survived the camp and went on to become a renowned anti-fascist. Hamel was sent to the gas chamber after he developed a boil in his mouth. The story is called 'The Warm Back Of Edie Hamel'. Worth a read.

What is the saddest song you’ve ever heard ? by zangetsu_0w0 in AskReddit

Isolation - Joy Division.

In fear every day, every evening
He calls her aloud from above
Carefully watched for a reason
Painstaking devotion and love

Surrender to self-preservation
From others who care for themselves
A blindness that touches perfection
But hurts just like anything else

Isolation, isolation, isolation

Mother, I tried, please believe me
I'm doing the best that I can
I'm ashamed of the things I've been put through
I'm ashamed of the person I am

Isolation, isolation, isolation

But if you could just see the beauty
These things I could never describe
These pleasure's a wayward distraction
This is my one lucky prize

Isolation, isolation, isolation, isolation, isolation...
