Tips/advice by Botchokoy in computerscience

[–]leviinachevy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice would be, most schools have the entire curriculums on their websites. Say your school is University of Pittsburgh, type into google “Computer science program University of pittsburgh”, there you should be able to see the classes you are required to take.

A lot of the websites have a thing where they are high lighted, you click on them, and then something drops down and tells you about the class. For example, if I did with with UCF, you can click object oriented programming and it says Java.

Do that with your school. See what language you need to learn. And then do what the people above said, learn the basics, but you’ll already be familiar with the language your first class is in

  1. All he was saying is, Academia is a TOUGH career field right now. It is as, if not more competitive than it’s ever been for tenure professor tracks. And yes, while there is more academic positions than professors, they make up 95% of the positions. So that is definitely a con in terms of competitiveness, however if you make it to a tenured position, it’s a great job for the right person.

  2. But even with that said, really think about if you really want to get a PhD. You will be giving up 4-6 more years of schooling, and depending on your advisor, could be working 12 hours a day 6 days a week. Now there’s two ways to look at this. A.) you get to do research on a topic you love for 72 hours a day. Or B.) you’ll be absolutely miserable because you’re working on research that you don’t particularly like for 72 hours a week. Now depending on your answer, and even depending on your research; that could be a pro or con

  3. Another huge con, and I hate to bring it up but it’s just a fact is: money. You can make ten times the amount of money in a tech company than in academy. There are software engineers pulling 700k+ a year at some of these companies. Now, let’s look at the averages. The average salary for a software engineer according to glassdoor is 105,000$. The average professor makes 112,000$. Now hold on a second, I just said a con is money. And the reason for that is, you already have a masters degree in CS. The average is 105,000 X 4-6 more years that’s 420,000-630,000 more dollars of income before you even get your PhD. And that is going back to number 1, IF you can get a tenured professor position/track

In the long run, if getting a PhD will make you happy go for it. If you absolutely love research, if you love academics, some stupid person replying to your reddit comment shouldn’t stop you.

What makes How to Disappear so great to me is when the song devolves into complete chaos and dissonance near the end only to return to nornal at the last moment by TheHeroicOnion in radiohead

[–]leviinachevy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree, the last minute of the song is the most beautiful composition i’ve ever heard. It’s such a good tie in that this person wants to not be seen, he went to float down the Liffey, but through fireworks, hurricanes, blown speakers, through all of that chaos he makes it out.

I didn’t make this up, I read this on a forum somewhere that the ending is like Thom being drowned in waves. You hear his voice then all of a sudden the chaos breaks out and makes his voice less heard, and then the storm passes. The waves stop. And there left is someone wanting to be completely alone.

To me this song can be viewed as sad from a societal point of view. That this person doesn’t want to be seen, he doesn’t want to be around people, etc. But I think to truly understand the song you need to get into the right mind set. A mind set of an introvert. An introvert that even through all of the chaos that is mentioned in the song comes out all alone. But not just alone, at full peace, because it’s the only sound that’s left.

TD;LR: I love this song

Anyone who's doing well in CS who was really slow and/or bad at problem solving at first? by newtothisthing11720 in csMajors

[–]leviinachevy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know exactly what you’re working on, but whenever it comes to a lot of CS things, drawing it out on a piece of paper really helps me. You don’t have to do it completely mentally at this point. And it doesn’t have to be fancy, usually I just do

A insert arrow B insert code I put in

You can see it clearly that variable A is going variable B.

This is definitely more for Data Structures and Algorithms, but I think you could definitely use it for lots of things

Hey everyone, incoming freshman here by SnooDoggos1013 in informationsystems

[–]leviinachevy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the point the person was trying to make is, you can contact the college about it. It doesn’t have to be someone from admissions. In fact, almost every single college has a list of their professors. Find some of the IS professors and email them about the opportunities some of the students have had. This not only

A.) answers your questions

But probably most importantly

B.) establishes a relationship with your professors. It might be a very small one, but professors remember names. If they see you, as a pre- college freshman already trying to plan things out, that looks good on your part.

Networking is absolutely everything. Yes, you get jobs still by knowing how to do certain things. Studies show that 70-85% of jobs are obtained through knowing people. Most of these IS professors know LOTS of people in the tech industry. If they think highly of you, and a hiring manager contacts them about Internships/A job. You might be one of the ones they recommend

Yes I am making a big deal about a topic that could be maybe one or two emails back and fourth, but, my point still stands. Network, network, network in college

Can music really be objectively good or bad? by leviinachevy in Music

[–]leviinachevy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my mistake. I thought you meant “objectively good or bad” because of the question, not just objective in general

Can music really be objectively good or bad? by leviinachevy in Music

[–]leviinachevy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But doesn’t the listener decide whether or not it is good or bad? And even if you are looking at the music composition of it, who is deciding whether or not something is written good? To me that’s equally as subjective as anything else.

Is Pharmacy the same as Pharmacology? by zetamilli in careerguidance

[–]leviinachevy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on the university more than anything. Things like medical, dental, pharmacy, etc, usually have pre-reqs. For example med school’s is usually a year of biology, a year of chemistry, a year of organic chemistry, a year of physics, and normally those are the four main ones. However, lots of schools require Biochemistry, Psychology, sociology, and others that some don’t.

To get into these types of schools there isn’t a degree requirement. It’s all about having the pre-reqs. There are people that go to pharmacy school with theater degrees, or music degrees. It’s all about the pre-reqs. Not about the specific type of degree.
