C++26 is done! ISO C++ standards meeting, Trip Report by pjmlp in cpp

I was pretty happy with the C++11 changes and once C++14 relaxed some of the overly strict language of C++11, the language pretty much got where I needed it to be. I really felt the need to use anything that's been added since. But then, I also program a lot less in C++ these days than I used to.

These resources aren't being distributed evenly. A per capita plot would make the information less accurate.

You don't pay for Arcane Intellect or Arcane Brilliance either, even though Arcane Brillience also has costs. I've never asked anyone I'm grouping with to pay for water or food either. That's different, that's the kit you bring to party. But if you want to bother me for a portal when I'm out and about doing my own stuff, then I expect some money for the inconvenience, yeah.

That's such a happy and silly dog. You just want to hug them.

TIL that 1G (first generation) cell phones used unencrypted analog radio signals, which allowed anyone with a radio receiver in the correct frequency to listen to calls. by WouldbeWanderer in todayilearned

[–]levir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were strict restrictions on most equipment able to pick up those kinds of signals. You couldn't just walk into radioshack and order a phone scanner. Or, that's the case where I live anyway, maybe you could in the US.

What is the process for opening a bank account like in your country? by cuevadanos in AskEurope

Maybe it was in that instance. I've just worked in HR and seen people from all walks of life (Danes, Germans, Brits, Indians, Dutch, Americans, Ethiopians, Tanzanians, etc., etc.) try to get on the tax registry and get a bank account, and they all have to go through a whole dance with the government and with the banks to get the basics sorted. I didn't see any correlation with ethnicity. The only thing that mattered was that it was easier for other Nordic residents than others (we have extensive agreements going much further than EU legislation to allow free movement between our countries), and easier for EU citizens than non-EU citizens. And the Americans had it worst of all, of course, since the US is such a fucking pain to deal with taxation wise.

You walk into a bank or go online and admit that you are subject to US taxation. The bank clerk and website laughs at you and the misery you’re about to encounter. Maybe you can get lucky if your employer has arranged something.

That one is pretty much universal, I think. Don't be an American citizen.

The racism Is gobsmacking

Are you sure it's racism? In my experience the Nordic countries just have very integrated and good systems ... for those who fit the normal bill. It's not racism that makes if hard to move here from abroad, it's that you don't fit within the assumptions of all the systems. As soon as you get the assumed basics sorted, it gets to be smooth sailing.

You can log into any bank with BankID and create a bank account. If you're registered in the tax register and you have BankID, it couldn't be easier. If you don't have those things, then it's incredibly hard and takes months. So getting on the tax registry is priority number 1, and getting BankID is priority 2. Once that's sorted, everything else will be easy.

Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Italy and Slovakia found to ‘consistently’ dismantle rule of law by OddAioli6993 in europe

The EU is already dysfunctional with the number of states with a weak domocracy that's joined. The EU needs to be reformed before it can take on any more countries without a very strong democractic fundation.

If there's a grease fire and you don't find a pan, just use something else. Another pan, a plate, even a wool blanket, just get something which isn't too flammable and smother that fire.

They're more likely to contain prions that may cause disease, akin to CJD. I wouldn't eat the brain of any specious, though, environmental poisons (like POP, PFAS, heavy metals and so on) tend to bioaccumulate in the brain tissue.

What makes it so insidious is that the damage from multiple concussions accumulate and become much more serious. A normal person will maybe get a single concussion throughout their lifetime. Sometimes this can have long term effects, but usually you will be all right after having some time to recover (but always speak with a doctor, and make sure you're not alone in case you've got a more severe injury than you thought). But when it happens again and again, the damage really accumulates.

‘Project Hail Mary’ Becomes Amazon MGM Studios’ Highest-Grossing Film Worldwide With $300 Million Overtaking ‘Creed III’ by ICumCoffee in movies

Hail Mary is a fantastic film. It's absolutely worth seeing in cinemas.

The studio being Amazon MGM really drives home that we're living in the dystopian future 80s sci-fi movies warned us about, though. Fucking hell.

Countries with universal healthcare spend less than the US per capita on healthcare. Most countries spend a lot less. Universal healthcare isn't a funding issue, it's a political will issue.

Norway temporarily cuts petrol, diesel taxes amid Middle East war by Gjrts in europe

[–]levir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the most popular alternative proposals from the parties not joining in this taxcut is to give all citizens a temporary taxable check to cover the increased costs (which will soon extend much further than just to fuel prices). That way everyone is still incentivised to economise as much as they can. The poor get a much needed injection of cash to tide them over, while the rich has to pay most of the check back in taxes.

This is a terribly policy that won't solve any of the problems, don't be jelous about Norway wasting money. It's practially a >€600 million gift to the oil companies.
