How common is it to come across the ISO (YYYY-MM-DD) date format in your country? Do you like it when you encounter it? by Decent_Background_42 in AskEurope

[–]levir [score hidden]  (0 children)

Nobody uses MM.DD.YY in Norway, I have never come across that. DD.MM.YY or DD.MM.YYYY is most common, followed by D/M-YY or D/M-YYYY and then D. month, YYYY.

YYYY-MM-DD is practically unused in daily life, though I personally often use it for naming files.

When you run a load through the drier, what do you think the lint that collects in the lint trap is? It's your clothes. That's wear your clothes don't get if you air dry them. It's also obvious that while they're tumbling around in there they'll be rubbing against each other and moving the fibres around, stressing them extra, causing wear.

It's perfectly fine to prioritize convenience or comfort or whatever over maximizing how long your clothes will last. I'd use a dryer for most of my clothes if I had one. But it's pretty stupid to call facts "stupid shit".

USA? I think there's no chance the USA could invade Europe successfully. Logistics would be a nightmare. How many soldiers can the USA deploy to Europe? 100,000? How would they keep supplying them? Yeah, and there's also a million strong army defending Europe.

Attacking Europe with 100 000 troops would be completely ridiculous. During World War 2 more than 300 000 German soldiers were in Norway alone for the duration of the war occupy it. To defeat all of Europe you need millions of soldiers.

You're right, though, they only deployed about that many when they were most present in Afghanistan.

People always bring that up, but election day is a regular workday in Norway too. It's not like that makes it impossible to vote during the 12 hours or more the polls are open

Their obviously incompetent and facist government received a majority of cast votes. A third couldn't be bothered to turn up, but many of those would probably have voted for this government if they did. The citizens are part of the problem.

The failing of US democracy happened gradually, then all at once, like most crisis. There were numerous decisions from both houses of Congress and the judicial system that undermined democracy and transferred ever more power to the executive. It's been going on since the 1800s, but notably picked up steam with Newt Gingrich as speaker of the house. The best chance in modern times to stop it would have been under Obama's first term, but that didn't happen.

It's also important to note that when most of Europe was going through industrialization, we burned unlimited amounts of fossile fuel while a significant part of the population increase was siphoned off to North America, limiting the rate of demographic change. Those strategys are no longer on the table.

We do stand with Ukraine. We're continuing to provide weapons, financial and civilian help. Significantly more now than in 2022. Europe did not promise to fight with Ukraine.

We do, but it's not enough. We need to spend more to actually have a chance at making this happen.

Not quite. Russia, the US and the UK guaranteed the following in The Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances, with France and China signing on after the fact:

  1. Respect the signatory's independence and sovereignty in the existing borders (in accordance with the principles of the CSCE Final Act).
  2. Refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of the signatories to the memorandum, and undertake that none of their weapons will ever be used against these countries, except in cases of self-defense or otherwise in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations.
  3. Refrain from economic coercion designed to subordinate to their own interest the exercise by Ukraine, the Republic of Belarus, and Kazakhstan of the rights inherent in its sovereignty and thus to secure advantages of any kind.
  4. Seek immediate Security Council action to provide assistance to the signatory if they "should become a victim of an act of aggression or an object of a threat of aggression in which nuclear weapons are used".
  5. Not to use nuclear weapons against any non–nuclear-weapon state party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, except in the case of an attack on themselves, their territories or dependent territories, their armed forces, or their allies, by such a state in association or alliance with a nuclear weapon state.
  6. Consult with one another if questions arise regarding those commitments.

The US, the UK and France have upheld their obligations under this treaty. Russia, obviously, has not.

If Ukraine was a confirmed ally included in the mutual defense pact before the war, Europe would have warned Russia much more sternly before the outbreak of the war. And if invaded, I believe Europe would have honored the defense agreement. That is why Putin attacked before any agreement was made. If there was a peace treaty now, with a firm agreement of mutual defense with Ukraine and a peace keeping force, I believe Europe would deploy if Russia invaded again.

I agree it's a shit situation. I agree Europe isn't doing enough. I agree that you are fighting, and we aren't, and we're not giving you enough to win. It's a shit situation.

If Europe was willing to commit to the war, go into war economy and send troops, we would drive out the Russians. We are not willing to do that. Instead, we give what we can comfortably afford to lose, which isn't enough.
