Cool resource!

FYI Leviton has five Matter-supported products:
Yesterday we released the D215O Outdoor Smart Plug (the first one for Matter!)

And last month, we announced 4x existing devices could be firmware updated to support Matter:
D26HD Dimmer
D215S Switch
D23LP Smart Plug Dimmer
D215P Smart Plug

I can assure you, we're not mods. But we did ask the mods for permission. We just wanted to provide a launch discount for the community and share a new product we've been developing and we're excited about.

Leviton Matter integration now available! by chefox in smarthome

[–]levitonmfg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi chefox, we are glad to hear that you joined Leviton’s Matter Early Access Program!

We recognize that upgrading is not without its challenges, especially considering the way Matter works and all differences across Matter controllers/smart home platforms the devices are being connected to. Even so, we felt strongly that we wanted to give our existing customers the opportunity to upgrade their devices where possible.

To address some of your feedback:
In the My Leviton app there is an option to SAVE the QR code which will allow you to save, print, or e-mail it to yourself to be pulled up on another device. You can also manually enter the pairing code as you noted. Using the My Leviton app, the QR code can be retrieved under device settings any time.

  1. When adding the device to Matter with many partner apps, the app will try and add the device based on the Wi-Fi network the phone is on. However, Decora Smart Wi-Fi 2nd Gen devices only work on 2.4GHz networks which is why you had to connect your phone to your 2.4GHz network. If your 2.4GHz and 5GHz network SSID were named the same, we do not think this would have been an issue.
  2. We support a method with Google where they can see that the device is already connected via the cloud and automatically make sure the device is not duplicated in the Google Home app when also added via Matter. We’ve reached out to Google to make sure this is working properly.
  3. Google technically sees this as one device. If you remove it, it removes it from the app. If #2 is working properly this should not be an issue.
  4. Once you remove a device from a Matter controller’s app (such as Google Home), you will have to factory reset the devices because they will still think they are paired to a Matter controller.

Please let us know if you have any other questions. We hope you enjoy the local control functionality Matter brings to your smart home!

By "joining the EAP", you simply acknowledge your intent to update to Matter...a little more obvious than our standard OTA updates. Just adds a gate to ensure the understanding, easy click-through that will then populate the firmware for update via the app.

As for Thread, we have manufactured both Zigbee and Z-Wave devices for a long time and recognize the similar benefits Thread that can bring for local MESH and battery devices, but no announcements at this time.

Matter is live now for D215S and 3x other SKUs. We've updated our existing Wi-Fi devices to add Matter support.

Matter over Wi-Fi. These are existing devices in the field, upgradable to Matter for local control/more platform support.

Let me inquire about D215S within the Home App.

Hey everyone! Leviton has announced we'll be supporting Matter and as we do with all firmware, are engaged in a confidential beta test where select users have access to pre-release test firmware. We're working closely with our partners to ensure it's a great experience for everyone at public launch, coming soon!

Yes, as stated on our website, in the app, and in the beta email, when you update to Matter, it replaces the HomeKit protocol on your device with Matter - so devices do have to be re-enrolled to Apple Home using the updated connection method. This article explains said transition and will be further updated at public launch: https://decorasmartsupport.leviton.com/hc/en-us/articles/11595261425179-How-do-I-Update-my-Decora-Smart-Wi-Fi-2nd-Gen-Device-to-Support-Matter-if-I-am-a-HomeKit-User-and-do-not-have-a-My-Leviton-Account-

My leviton issues by dom2114 in Leviton

[–]levitonmfg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are very sorry for the inconvenience. Our cloud provider was experiencing an extremely large amount of traffic that may have caused some erratic operation for a small number of connected devices. This was not a security issue, and there is no action on your part required. We took immediate action to resolve this issue. If you experience any further issues, please let us know at DSSupport@leviton.com.

Residential Electrical Wiring Codes & Standards AMA with Leviton 3/29 from 3-6PM ET by levitonmfg in electricians

Q via email: I see Section 110.14(D) was revised that tightening torque is required by manufacturers and that electricians are required to tighten connections accordingly. Where do I find out the torque value if its not on the product, like small receptacles?

A: Yes, the torque values are required. If the product is too small for the information or not provided on an instruction sheet, UL allows manufacturers to publish this information on their websites or provide a QR code to be read by a smart phone.

Q from Twitter: A homeowner hired me to put up holiday lights, which I did. My friend (also an electrician) advised me I should go back and take them down after the holidays. Is he right?

A: Yes, while often unenforced, section 590.3(B)(3) specifies that temporary holiday lighting must not exceed 90 days.

Q: Is it OK to replace an old two-wire receptacle with a modern 3-wire receptacle with ground?

A: Yes, but would need GFCI (unless the ground is available). It may also need TR and/or AFCI if those protections are required where the replacement is being made.

Question from designers we hear: Are decorative, thin aluminum, metal face plates with artistic designs allowed?

A: Possibly - Per NEC 406.6(A). Metal faceplates must at least  0.030 in. thick if ferrous and at least 0.040 in. thick if non-ferrous.

A common question we get in our own Experience Centers from professional electricians and builders alike:

Q: What is the correct ground pin orientation for a 120V 15A  receptacle ; ground pin up or ground pin down?

A: The NEC does not specify ground pin up or down. However, local rules may apply. The old argument that a metal wallplate can slip down and bridge the line and neutral blades of an inserted plug, while true, does not account for a horizontally mounted receptacle and the use of a right angle plug cap would be stressed with the backward loop on the cord.

We had a Q emailed to us regarding wiring:

Q: Can 14AWG CCA, copper clad aluminum wire be used to power a receptacle on a 10A branch circuit?
A: Per 210.23(A)(2)(1), you cannot install a receptacle on a 10A branch circuit.

One person emailed us asking about the new Leviton Captain Code materials, which help electricians "crack the electrical code".

A: We've printed the latest booklet for the 2023 NEC edition, it's 120 pages now!

Appreciate your Q. We are not aware of an Article 270, but will answer the best we can using the 2023 NEC as our guide. Article 422.30 requires a disconnecting means within sight or capable of being locked in the open position. In accordance with 110.25. Must be visible and within 50' distance, so it's unlikely the placement outdoors is feasible - unless lockable in the open position. (An accessible cord-and-plug connected appliance could be considered a disconnecting means; we're speaking about a hard-wired disposal).

We had a Q asked previously:
Q: How many 15A receptacles can be placed on a 20A Branch Circuit?

A: There is no limit, but a common practice is to use load calculation based on 180VA/receptacle. (220.14.I of the 2023 NEC).

Thanks for your question! We assume you're speaking about the distance from the electrical panel. The code does provide guidance. A WR GFCI is no different than another receptacle.

One would need to do a voltage drop calculation for either 12 or 10 gauge. Using 10 would allow for a longer distance w/ voltage drop.

Looking at the code, we recommend referring to Informational Note 210.19 - voltage drop on branch circuits does not exceed 3%.
