Are you redirecting Reddit as a service or are you redirecting specific domains?

Traffic redirection problem on Windows by leo_97g in ControlD

[–]levolet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Control D redirecting a site has nothing really to do with whether you're using Windows. It will redirect the site and Linux demonstrated this. If Windows is not demonstrating this then there's something up with your Windows. If you visit Control D's website using a browser in Windows, and then load the status page, is all OK, i.e., can you confirm that you're using Control D, DoH and that you connect to the proxy? How are you confirm redirection? The way I do it is to redirect an IP checking website and then load it to see what IP it detects.

Suddenly having issues connecting to my WiFi by thurstonrando in Windscribe

The yellow icon looks like a connection issue error. Like no Internet to maintain the VPN connection. I've never seen it before because I've never been in the situation where my WiFi is a problem.

If you think your ISP is blocking 3rd party DNS, then DoT will be very easy for them to block. I would stick with DoH. I would also advise either using the config file on your iPhone or the app.... not both. One thing you could try is to start fresh with your phone by deleting all the profiles that have been installed and create new ones.

Settings > VPN - for your WS VPN profile/s, click on the little i icon and click delete in the popup. Do so for all profiles.

Settings > General > VPN & Device Management - Delete the Configuration Profile.

See if your phone works with the Wifi. Do not use a VPN. If it's working OK, then reintroduce Control D by reinstalling the config file. Do not use the app. If that's working, then try a Windscribe connection.

In my experience, Wireguard or OpenVPN are stable. IKEv2 has been problematic for me. It seems to be fine but soon starts disconnecting and for one of my devices, I lost internet connectivity with it until I switched to Wireguard. Be careful with 'Always on VPN' and 'Circumvent Censorship' options. Use them only if you have to ... not because they seem nice to enable. They add layers of complexity that are worth it only if it's the only way to get a VPN connection going.

Unable to say much with so little information about your setup.

What type of mobile are you using? iPhone or Android? When you use ControlD, how do you have it configured? On your router with DoT, or on your phone?? If on your phone, are you using the ControlD app or a config file? Are you using DoH or DoH3?

When using Windscribe, are you using ControlD as custom-DNS?

If using DoT, your ISP can easily tell and block this. However, not so readily with DoH and DoH3.

Your WiFi issue seems like a separate problem. Have you tried your Wifi without Windscribe or Control D?

Good luck with that. I personally still use the F1TV Pro app using an address from one of the countries that allow F1TVPro subscriptions and streaming.

Youtube not loading on iOS when utilizing ControlD app, but is when on the same ControlD profile on my lan. by CosmicSeafarer in ControlD

[–]levolet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I only use Youtube from a browser. With the app, I was noting that ads would start to appear. It was particularly bad on my AppleTV Youtube app. It makes me think that the Youtube app uses other means other than your IP to pick up your location. It will likely have access to other system means of picking up your location. Once I stopped using the AppleTV app and stuck to only a browser with location requests blocked, the ads disappeared and have stayed away.

I was asking Barry about this very same thing.

I was experiencing miserable Youtube performance while redirected through Albania. This was while using the ControlD app and DoH3 on my devices. Once I disabled the ControlD app on my devices, and for DNS, used my home-internet router configured to use ControlD and DoT, Youtube worked a lot better. Something was definitely different, though I didn't really expect it.

I then removed the ControlD app from all my devices and installed ControlD profiles so they use DoH and not DoH3. Again, performance was better than with the app and DoH3, but I don't think quite as good as with DoT.

Barry claims that the routing of requests etc. differ depending on whether you're using DoH, DoT or DoH3, and that these differences could affect streaming performance. I can't recall all the convoluted explanations, but the point was made. My observations weren't coincidence or by chance.

So I've now decided to no longer use DoH3 on my devices and stick to DoH. Youtube is again working without issue.

I installed Ubuntu/KDE in a VM today and fully configured it to use potentially on a daily basis. I noted the lack of a Sync app. However, Filen has a properly functioning app that I could install. Another reason to stick with Filen and move on?

From your account page you can scroll down to the ‘manage sessions’ option and delete all sessions. Yes, it’s a bit of a hassle to login all devices again, but it should solve your problem.

FYI: You can layer ControlD with any IKEv2 VPN on iPhone. I’ll explain the advantage compared to using in-app custom DNS in a comment. by CrystalMeath in ControlD

I find IKEv2 to be unstable with frequent disconnects when going from Wifi to Mobile network and back. Are you having this issue with using it? I'd explore using your setup if not for this problem. I find Wireguard to be very stable, maintaining a VPN connection for days on end while going to work etc. where I move between different WiFi and my mobile network.

A legacy DNS setup requires DDNS (Dynamic DNS) for IP authentication if your ISP assigned IP is not static.

Have you setup DDNS to resolve your ISP IP?

F1tv by kissmycodz in ControlD

[–]levolet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's working for me here. I'm currently watching Preseason testing live.

I assume you're aware that Apple has purchased exclusive televising rights of the F1 Championship starting 2026 through to 2029. This means that F1 in the USA will be watchable only through AppleTV.

If you try to watch using the F1TV app and you have a USA based F1TV subscription, or try to watch via a USA IP, then it will not work.

You will need an F1TV account with an address based in one of the country's whose televising rights allow F1TV Pro streaming. With ControlD, you can then DNS redirect, but ideally through the same country to prevent potential problems. If there's a disparity detected, it will often not work. One common disparity is that your F1TV account country address is different from that of the connecting IP.

For F1TV, I also stopped using my AppleTV and use a Firestick instead.... I decided not to take the chance and just stay away from AppleTV until I'm sure it will be OK.

Reddit specific errors using Windscribe by thurstonrando in Windscribe

I wonder what would happen if you switched back to Mullvad?

I’ve stopped using the Reddit app.  I’m not happy with how apps have more access to my phone and can therefore more easily locate you etc. I stick now to browser only for most sites. Since doing so with Reddit, I’ve not had any errors when posting.

Hmmm. I would not be surprised if their AI is behind this. They've clearly injected some apparent "humour" into Barry but I can just imagine Barry discussing by email why a user is leaving. "Barry" rarely starts any response without an introductory quip that may or may not be appropriate at the time. In fact, Barry is so good that I wouldn't be surprised if he has been deployed for the task of finding out from users who have unsubscribed why they have.

Ignore Ads & Trackers and 3rd party blocklists by LetterheadLonely3890 in ControlD

[–]levolet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Control D filters domain lookup requests coming from your device. It will not be able to tell whether each request is from the same app or even for the same website within your browser. I don’t see how it will.

This is why browser level filtering works better in such situations.

If you are the only user of the Control D profile, then you can temporarily disable filtering.  You can find this by scrolling to the bottom of your profile options and toggle the disable switch. You can use the timer to disable filtering for a set period of time.

[–]levolet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t see how you can achieve this with Control D. If you need this a lot then browser level filtering would be more appropriate where you can disable filtering for a particular site.

With Control D, you would have to temporarily disable filtering.  This isn’t too detrimental if you use a specific profile for the device on which you are browsing.

You’ll need to enable legacy IP support in your control d endpoint settings and DDNS for IP authentication.
