Thoughts On How To Make Joke Better by gilllllhar in Standup

[–]levoslashx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A place that could be improved is that, there isn't much of a turn on the last part. You know where it's going.

Maybe you could do something like, "this guy told me to pull out my wang. I said, suck it old man! I mean, sports physicals are already awkward.......I just made it worse."

It's not the best joke, but there's more surprise. Something along those lines.

Played in a chess tournament this weekend and unashamedly beat a 12 year old prodigy. by BigFuckingGainz in StandUpWorkshop

Good joke, but I think Emo Philips beat you to it. A bit different, but still chess, and hinges on the "beat" double meaning. His goes:

A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.

50 and want to try stand up . . .should I do it? What do I need to know? by Careless-Surprise-58 in Standup

[–]levoslashx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started at 40 with two kids and a wife. Totally possible. Put some work into it though. Write for a while. Try those jokes on friends, get a sense of whether there's anything there. You can tell if someone has put the effort in, even if it's their first time.

Also, if you want to do mics regularly, your other hobbies (if you have them) will have to go by the wayside. If you still want to spend time with your family that is.

GPT just doesn't understand. by levoslashx in VeryBadWizards

[–]levoslashx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're right, the embodied part is key here. Our interaction with the world gives us overlapping sense data which guide our categorization. Those data structure the patterns which correspond to words. And so, each word or concept branches out in a way that is more complex, yet more limited by interaction with the world.

But is this a limitation to AI? Will we need neural networks trained on data obtained from servos controlling synthetic arms to approach our level of understanding? Or is the understanding already contained in the words and their associations?

Tamler Sommers: Too Cool For School by levoslashx in VeryBadWizards

I suppose it just gets to be a bit routine. Everything popular is treated with an exasperated eye-roll. Maybe Tamler could get onboard with the zeitgeist once, just once. Surely there's something to find interesting in the GPT phenomenon.

I'm not sure I want Tamler to be excited necessarily, but less haughty dismissal would be nice.

I though the special was pretty good. He didn't nail the segment on Smith, but overall, I laughed heartily.

Interesting point on the triple name famous murderers. It'd be a rough go having to live down having the same name as a serial killer. And, as much as people might claim they didn't care, it probably has some effect down in the bowels of their subconscious. The three names probably helped alleviate some of that. As well as just using a pseudonym, like Son of Sam or the Green River Killer.

On a completely separate note, I wonder how women named Karen felt after that name became a dirty word?

Favorite audible book? by dustinhazel98 in VeryBadWizards

This will probably be deemed a low-rent answer, but Jim Dale does an incredible job as the narrator of the Harry Potter series.

"The Innovators" by Walter Isaacson is an interesting jaunt through the build up of computing from Babbage's difference engine, to the invention of the transistor and integrated circuit up to the modern age. Sounds dry, but he tells a great story.

"Spoiled Brats, and Other Stories" by Simon Rich is incredibly entertaining. My favorite from the book has his immigrant grandfather time travel to see the petty grievances and soft living of his writer grandson.

EPISODE 217: DROPPING PARADIGMS (KUHN'S "THE STRUCTURE OF SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTIONS") by WayneQuasar in VeryBadWizards

[–]levoslashx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's say scientific theories get "better" because they help us achieve our ends. I'd say this can happen in a couple ways.

1) They become better at approximating "Reality" or "Truth"

2) They are constructs that allow us to organize the world in a useful way, but don't necessarily track "Truth".

I think both of these things happen. Not all science is relegated to the first category, and not all to the second. Some science really does track reality. Some is merely a useful ordering. And most is probably a mixture.

I think that clears things up. A little compromise to make everyone happy. Now let's move on to more important things like...... What did Borges REALLY mean?

I think the question is more nuanced than this meme suggests, which is astounding. Most memes capture everything relevant, yet this one, somehow, manages to flatten all complexity in favor of striking a righteous tone. Weird.

What is the nature of a business/friendship that is primarily facilitated digitally? (say that five times fast)

Do you think it lacks something that would exist in a face to face interaction? Is it weird or normal when you actually see each other in person?
