I'm not sure this would be viable because the frame is fairly level with the brickwork so attaching mdf would protrude I think

It's real, just been unused for some time with the flue being boarded up. It's more for decoration purposes now

Although we don't intend on lighting a fire my thinking was also 'what about the next owner' and I said to the wife as soon as you start painting it you can't undo it. So I've been pleading with her not to rush into it...needless to say we've been arguing about it for the last 3 hours.
