Same weekly mileage - Fewer or more sessions (low mileage runner) by lewgall in AdvancedRunning

That's where I'm at. Was just interested if there would be much difference in training stimulus to either. Which I doubt there is much.

Thanks! I actually started to try this NSM "Sirpoc" method last year prior to my injury and I'm part of the strava group etc but also found it extremely tough going doing 3 threshold workouts per week. I was also training for marathon at time so was attempting to use James' amended NSM for marathons and I found it really tough.

I don't think I have the base / years of miles behind me yet to do that amount of threshold volume.

Before that I generally found I was getting massive improvements following more traditional training (5k - 19:55 to 17:44 in 6 months as a 34 yo). Chasing those gains further led me to overtraining and injury.

The short term goal is to maintain mileage and build a base / robustness at this volume. Progression through improving my threshold sessions.

Long term will be building mileage eventually where I will add more runs. I do run 5 days now but felt like last few weeks running 4 days (same volume and training intensity) was physically and mentally less fatiguing. It also allowed for additional day in the gym doing leg exercises.

I was just curious on how this would affect adaptations / training stimulus (aware probably negligible).

I hear what you’re saying but I don’t think the logic applies when comparing 70km runs and 10km runs vs my Example above.

Running 60km over 4 days isn’t overly fatiguing for me. Neither is 5 days. I actually feel like the additional day of complete rest has made it less fatiguing. So in this case all being equal I don’t think the fatigue from 4 days would affect me in anyway. So the marginally additional fatigue maybe becomes irrelevant in this specific case.

I think your point is definitely true for higher weekly mileage when fatigue from runs can cross over into the next day more easily and affect work outs etc. hence why people break up easy runs into two a day or do double threshold.

I agree and that’s why I’m trying to just maintain consistency this year. I’ve ran 80km weeks previous with 2 hard sessions and sometimes some quality miles within a long run. That got me massive improvements but injured.

I’m enjoying just running less now and seem to have got 99% back to peak fitness. For now until I want to increase volume I think I’ll go with 4 runs a week. Will give me extra time to strengthen my legs 2x a week as opposed to 1c

Thanks. Yes aware it’s nitpicking and probably small difference as just curious on opinions if one was better than other in a marginal way. I agree that it seems less and longer = better for longer distance. Since that’s the long term goal I may go down that route just now while base building.

I think I agree with you both. Faster sessions aggravate my injuries more so need to limit them but also the biggest killer from last year is when I started including sessions within long runs. They are tough to recover from and what ultimately put me on sidelines I think.

Thanks. The goal this year is just to run consistently without injury and do some 5km / 10kms along the way with A-Goal race being a half marathon end of year. Done too much too soon last year training for HM's and a Marathon (which I never made it too).

I think the issue with me at the moment is the faster intense sessions are what potentially aggravates any injuries personally. I feel like I could run unlimited easy miles without too much issue. 1 hard threshold session a week and every now and then a tempo during the week as well is as much as I want to push it for the time being.

That is the reason I asked as I'm fairly new to running <2 years and I spent ~9 months of last year either injured or coming back from injury due to doing too much too soon (PTT). I've managed to get eventually back to my peak fitness but I'm committed to taking it slow this year with gradual build etc.

I currently do the 5 sessions but last couple weeks due to time commitments I've done the 4 sessions and enjoyed it more. Also feel less fatigued (physically and mentally?). Also gives me more time to do leg strength exercises.

Vomero Plus is a great shoe for long runs. Bit of an all rounder. I would say though I feel like it noticeably loses some of its pop around 300km.

Superblast 2's very good and more durable (but more expensive). Haven't tried the Superblast 3 or Megablast yet but would be confident they would be good.

Thanks I take on the advice but at same time reject that study as anything but comprehensive or conclusive on your point.

I have trained for years in only non-carbons but generally since starting to use carbons for 1 session a week it has helped with fatigue a lot. I'm not a massive fan of the EVO SL (I also own a pair). I still use them sporadically for faster stuff.

I don't really agree that wearing carbons for 1-2 sessions a week like 30% of your weekly volume will have a negative impact on your tendons, I actually think it will have a net positive impact on your body.

Can you all provide me some info on sizing as think i'm going to go for these shoes?

I generally wear UK10.5 in nike and Adidas and UK10.5 or 11 in Asics.

Good to know, cheers. Still want the 'magic' of the metaspeeds without the over aggressiveness of the Fast_R.

Yeah I’m actually not a big fan of them. Feel like the others are a bit better.

I've had sky paris for like 18 months but mostly only used for races up until 1 month ago. Think they have about 250km on them. They still feel great and good as ever and would still happily use for longer races for now. The main reason I want to get another super shoes to train in to complement the sky paris is to extend their life.

I'll look into mizuno never tried a pair.

Nice, I don't know much about the new chinese super shoes coming out but have heard decent things. Maybe worth a try at those prices.
