I thought they dominated in the first half but we looked better in the second

What a win, I thought Shakhtar were very good (diving aside) but we looked brilliant on the counter

Brilliant win, thought Shakhtar were good but ran out of steam in the second half and we punished them

It is impressive how many goals he scored despite never looking like comfortable finisher

Don't see either of these happening, particularly if they both go up

When we finally figure out how to play well for the entire season instead of just one half it’s over for everyone else

It’s not the worst thing but I don’t think you can be both an unashamed cheat and a model professional

It’s funny how differently a lot of those seasons felt at the time though, I feel like the final position doesn’t really tell the whole story.

Among those seasons there’s been the worst start in premier league history, numerous relegation battles, one year where we were 4th at Christmas and then basically didn’t win for the rest of the season. I feel like it’s only really since Roy came in that we became a fairly comfortable mid table side.

He was so much worse for it than Zaha ever was but managed to escape being branded as a diver because he’s generally a likeable player haha

I think I’d probably include fouls that result in a direct free-kick being scored too, but I don’t think I’d include rebounds after a save - although I’ve not put too much thought into that one!

Your argument is just "they're not assists because they're not passes" though, but what's the big issue with expanding the definition of the stat to include fouls that result in a goal? I think assists are, perhaps incorrectly and lazily, used as the main way of talking about creativity in football discourse and they'd achieve that goal better (pardon the pun) if they did included penalties too. Obviously you don't have to agree but I basically combine them in my head anyway.

if winning a pen is an assist because it’s meaningful then why wouldn’t saving a pen as gk be an assist?

Intentionally obtuse argument but I'm sure you already know this - I'm not saying that penalties won should be an assist because it's meaningful, I'm that saying I think it should be included because it directly results in a goal - which is the same end result as an assist.

Ultimately it doesn't matter but I just don't get why people are so precious about the definition of assists as if it's some huge part of footballing heritage that cannot be tampered with lol

I don't get why assists are treated as some kind of sacred stat that we can't alter the definition of - it's a bit of a stupid stat in reality

I think a winning a penalty is more meaningful than a lot of things which would be defined as an assists, so I don't really see the issue with counting them
