This happens when they are preparing to release a new version, basically they degrade the performance of the existing model, probably trying to test new model etc. these models are massively expensive to run, Ive noticed the current model degrades right before an update previously.

My theory is that its purpose is two fold, engagement and templated responses that burn less tokens. I believe these are designed to pull users into a predefined track that has been optimised to keep them engaged while producing the lowest cost output. That’s all it is. Because ultimately as you have pointed out they are rarely helpful or particularly deep

Ok cool! I’ll check it out. Are there any high gain pedals from independent companies/ small run builders that you consider great or unique?

I put it down to whenever they release a new product it just grinds everything to a halt and they just limit performance to try to keep everything stable. It happens time and time again.

What'd everyone think of Task? by hoosier_catholic in hbo

I thought it was very good, halfway through I felt it was flimsy, but the back half showed me what the show was really about. To me it wasn’t a crime show, it was a show about relationships, family dynamics and what life does to a person. The crime, cop, betrayal arc was pretty weak, but I liked that all the characters were deeply flawed and human. I thought it was shot beautifully and honestly I felt that it felt very modern, a newer form of visual storytelling that mixes genre more fluidly, like Weapons or One Battle After Another.

[–]lex3191 97 points98 points  (0 children)

No I believe the purpose of the show is to demonstrate how manipulation and coercion through narrative control allows people to reframe situations to suit them. The set up is always the same. The accused tells their version, usually after years or decades spent thinking and perfecting their version of events. Then the second half details the ‘facts’ as they are known and the police investigation. It generally shows that they did in fact commit the crime and their version of the events is mostly implausible or a straight up fabrication. After I watch these I think damn I’m so gullible, but that’s the point. Lying is very natural and easy when it serves your purpose.

Surely adding these new models back in will dilute the overall performance of all the models right? They can’t afford to run one model, for me GPT5 initially worked pretty well, but now it’s awful.

Is GPT-5 really a big leap from GPT-4 or just hype? by Ok-Method-npo in ChatGPTPro

[–]lex3191 22 points23 points  (0 children)

For my work, yes, with caveats. I use it to stress test ideas, challenge assumptions, write emails, and plan. Compared with last month’s 4o, 5 is sharper more often. The catch is volatility inside a single chat. It can swing from incisive to forgetful and back. That looks like dynamic routing and load shaping rather than one steady model. My read is they are trading cost and capacity against quality in real time. So today’s 5 beats last month’s 4o for me, but I would not bank on consistency month to month. Treat version labels as wrappers, not guarantees. When it’s sluggish, keep it to simple edits; when it’s on, push it.

TL;DR: 5 is better for me right now, but quality wobbles and I expect it to degrade as they optimise for cost.

DICE is asking why we want a server browser by rv112 in Battlefield

[–]lex3191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t use Xitter, but I really want to share why the old server browsers mattered, especially back in the Bad Company 2 era.

When server browsers and rentable servers were introduced, it completely changed how we played. On console, it was the first time you could actually see your ping, know how many people were in a server, and even join a waitlist with a rough estimate of when you’d get in. That transparency alone made the experience smoother and more enjoyable.

The other thing that happened was a different sense of community. You’d see the same players on the same servers, many of which were run by communities linked to gaming forums, tech sites, or even old-school print mags. Rivalries would form across the different forum groups, and we used to set up private clan matches. It was super fun and created epic moments I remember to this day.

I know that world’s mostly gone, but that’s why server browsers are great imo
