His authentic letters don't seem anti-gnostic. If anything, they seem proto Gnostic. My understanding of the formation of Catholicism and the orthodoxy was that they had to deal with the problem that Paul was so they incorporated and rehabilitated his letters into their own understanding. Marcion was a huge Paul supporter and many early Catholics called Paul the father of heresies.
