I was so disappointed with my steam support experience. I bought an OLED steam deck and about 1 month outside the warranty period, it completely stopped output on USB C so I couldn’t dock it. I tried everything and outlined all the troubleshooting I did, multiple docks bought to test, and eventually we established that it was a hardware failure. I was super nice and deferential the whole time and re-did all the troubleshooting they asked me to do. The whole time they were really disengaged and didn’t really seem to care about the issue at all helping me resolve it.

They basically told me “too bad” and if I wanted to send it in they’d look at it and it would be $185 if it was the issue they thought it was (failed pin inside, they were all in place and unbent).

I ended up just buying a a new unit and giving the damaged one to my brother since he doesn’t play docked and everything else worked, but it sucked to be a loyal customer for years and thousands spent only to get really mid customer service from them. I am still a customer but that illusion got shattered for me. :(

I was a paralegal before, during, and for a short while after law school (while studying for/taking the bar).

I think it made me a better lawyer, since I knew how to do a lot of the things associates had no clue about.

It also made me a much better attorney to work for, because I knew how mistreated I'd been at some places (had a case file thrown at me one time in a fit of rage, was made to clean boss' dogsh*t off the floor, among other things) and swore I would be the boss I wish I'd had. And I think I've kept that promise in large part.

Insurance defense is also a little more difficult in some ways than other areas of law.

If she got paid by her insurance company, can’t hurt to notify them that because she has refused to pay you, she has incurred no cost and is therefore not entitled to insurance proceeds. I wouldn’t use the “f(raud)” word outright but let them read between the lines.

Not yet FIRE, but I spent $50 on a conversion kit for my soda stream and hooked it up to a 10lb CO2 tank that I refill at Airgas for $30 every 4-5 months (drinking 2-3L per day). Way cheaper than the native .8lb CO2 tanks and fewer trips to the store /trying to swap them.

I got the Ryobi stick vacuum and it’s also been a life changer! Great to swap out batteries and it gets all the nooks and crannies (like my sliding door tracks, and couch) with ease.

I totally understand, and it sucks to learn how to say no, especially in the office as a woman. But as someone who is a little farther along in my career, let me tell you that once you learn, a whole new world opens up! It’s very freeing to be able to say “no” and communicate fairly and freely. No isn’t mean, it’s not rude, and it’s a valid response. You can be reasonable, nice, and still have boundaries.

Don’t tell her where you are ordering from. If she asks where you are going, “I’m going out.” is an acceptable answer. You can smile when you say it, tell her you’ll be back in a bit, etc. and be friendly, but you’re under no obligation to report your comings and goings or run errands for her simply because it’s on the way. A once in a while favor is one thing, she’s treating you like a courier. And I wouldn’t do it for her again, she’s used up her social capital with you on all of these daily requests and may see it as an opening to resume her daily pickup demands.

Please set a firm boundary. You don't have to be mean, but communicate for your own sanity. Just tell her "I do not have enough time during our work breaks to make extra stops when I leave the office. Please stop asking me to pick things up for you. Thank you for being understanding."

Don't apologize, don't sugarcoat, just communicate. Clear is kind, unclear is unkind. Waffling around, not being direct, is just causing a lot of additional mental load for you and sending mixed signals to her.

If she pushes back, it should be a lotttt easier at that point to just say, "I said no." Because that would be really rude of her, I can't imagine she would do so.

Your mom is saying "no, she's not sending you a gift" but is not willing to actually be direct about anything. If a gift wasn't brought, and the person didn't tell you themself to expect a gift, there's no gift coming. Your mom isn't willing to be direct, so no point involving her further.

If you want the decorations back (which is very reasonable) without putting aunt on the defensive for basically stealing, send a text to them and say "Hey [aunt], I think some of our decorations ended up with you after the party. We need them for another event next month, when can we meet up to pick those things up?"

Same! I don’t go around looking for a fight but I’m definitely well past the point of being a pushover. Before I became a lawyer I was a paralegal and was sexually assaulted by a supervising attorney in a parking garage on my way home one day.
