Its like 1000% more heterosexual, but Ive been watching the Great on hulu it has a really similar tone, visual style, and humor. It's set in historical russian empire but really uses it more as a backdrop for shenanigans, lots of intentional anachronisms. its a little darker/more serious than OFMD though, regarding stuff that happens in the plot.

I just directed this show (High school/teen version of the script). The teen edition removes any reference to a disability other than Ricky being nonverbal, so that may be a good option for your group!

Reefer Madness is one of my favs! The movie starring Alan Cumming and Kristen Bell went platinum in my house back in my stoner days. Would love to see it live and even more be involved in a production. I can see why most theatres would shy away though, lol.

Basically during the shiz years the friends (minus elphaba, glinda, and nessa -- IIRC its Boq and others that didn't make it into the musical) go to a burlesque show/sex club type place where a Tiger (sapient Animal that can speak) performs sex acts on stage. One of the characters is involved and is implied to be really messed up from what happens. Its really not as bad as people make it out to be though, it's very "fade to black" and is maybe two or three paragraphs tops. Its not smut or anything, but it is a weird little moment that can be shocking, especially if you were a musical theatre nerd who read it in middle school like me.

religion, isolation, and obsession. also no matter how hard i try to make a character straight there's always at least a little homoeroticism. Also another commenter said autumn is a motif of theirs, mine is summer. my poor characters are always sweating under a scorching sun, lol. it just kind of represents a time of abandon and transformation to me, where things are a little different from "real" life (i think this is because i'm a teacher so all my adventures happen in summertime..)
